Suppressed In the Former Ambassadors Pamphlet Corre spondence Between the President and the Storers Made Public Washington Dec 10In a long lot ter to Secretary of State Root PresiI dent Roosevelt gives correspondence that passed between the president and former Ambassador Bellamy Storer at Vienna and Mrs Storer The president says Storers refusal to answer his letters and publication of various private letters Justified the ambassadors removal that Mr Stor ers publication of private rorrespond once was peculiarly ungentlemanly nd that he the president had stated with absolute clearness his position the reason why It was out of the ques tion for him as president to try to get any archbishop made cardinal though expressing his admiration for Arch bishop Ireland as well as leaders of other denominations He says he thinks It well that the members of the cabinet should know certain facts which he Storer either suppresses or misstates He says he did not re sent the action of the Storers until It became evident they were likely to damage American interests The president says Mrs Storer urged him to give her husband a cab inet place and that she stated Mr Choate at London and General Porter at Paris were not proper persons to be ambassadors suggesting her hus band In that connection The presi dent Incorporates a letter from Post master General Cortelyou contradict ing the statement that President Me Klnloy had commissioned a gentleman to ask the pope as a personal favor to him and as an honor to the country to appoint Archbishop Ireland as cardinal Mr Cortelyou says the lato president never made any such re quest The president declares that Mr Storers statement that he author- Ized any such message to be delivered to Pope Plus Is untrue He says that AmIhRsdorf his visit to the Vatican and of the message he personally gave the pope on behalf of Mr Roosevelt The presidents action follows the publication of the confldental pamphlet which Mr Stonr last week sent to the president the cabinet and the senate foreign relations com mittee The letters show the famil iar relations of the president and ralllar relations of the president and the Storers from the time Roosevelt was governor of New York CHALLENGES STATEMENTS Bellamy Storer Issues a Reply to President Roosevelt Cincinnati Dec nIn reply to the letter of President Roosevelt Bellamy Storer former ambassador at Vienna gave out a statement In which he says his pamphlet to the president and th cr ivn writ for the whoIMr Storer says that in itself It is an answer to many things the president bas seen fit to say but as new mat ter has been put forward by Mr Roosevelt he feels compelled to speak Mr Storer continues There was no need of violent and insulting adjectives to show that the president dislikes me and did not wish me to remain In the service or to re tire from it In any customary way While the past has shown that few men can differ from each other the wishes or the memory of Mr Roosevelt without at once becoming a scloundrel or a liar I must make gIvenloutThat anything was over written to the president by my wife to the effect that Mr Choate and General Porter were not proper persons to be ambas sadors la flows to both of us For both these distinguished men we have and have had nothing but respect and good will personally and officially And the only fcr ing possible is one of regret that both of them have been lost to the public service since Mr Roosevelt was reelected As to Mr Root the press in 1901 was full of statements that ho might not bo able to remain In the cabinet on account ef health and would be succeeded by General Porter which would leave Paris vacant The president says The assertion that I authorized him to make such a statement as he says ho was author ized to make to the pope Is untrue I gave him no such authorization Ho omits to note that he himself told Archbishop Ireland that he had done ro and the letter of the latter to me which I had quoted I have ready to tibmlt with other letters of what the president told Archbishop Ireland relative to his message through me to the pope Long Tennessee Fight For twenty years W L Rawls of spelling order to the Public Printer and hereafter all documentsof the executive departments will again be printed in the oldfashioned style Representative Landis of the Joint Committee on Spelling had a conference today with the President when the President said that he did not wish to have spelling overshadow matters of great importance and expressed willingness to revoke his order for the new spelling in case the House of Repre sentatives should go on record as op posed to the system- Accordingly late this afternoon Mr Landis introduced the following resolu tions to the House Resolved That it is the sense of the House of Representatives that hereafter in presenting reports documents of other publications authorized by law ordered by Congress of either branch thereof emanating from the executive departments their bureaus and branches and independent officer of the Govern ment the printing office should observe and adhere to the standard of ortho graphy prescribed in generally accepted dictionaries of the English language The measure was passed without a dissenting vote altho Mr Gillet of Massachusetts who made a fight fo simplified spelling before the Hous Committee on Approbriations and has been regarded as the champion of the Presidents attitude explained that he did not wish to give the impression that he had changed his mind Mr Gillet said he saw that the House was overwhelmingly against the innovation and consequently he bowed to its will The system of reform spelling was put into effect by the President during the recess of Congress and all public documents supplied to the executive departments have been printed in the simplified way As a result the Govern ment printing office WAS using two forms of spellingin public printing the staid old method for Congress and the reform method in the executive docu mentsThis caused a confusion and comment unfavorable to the reform and finally was made an issue between the executive and legislative departments the judicial department having previously frowned upon the Presidents order E C DeWitt Ac Co of Chicago at whose laboratory Kodol is prepared as sure us that this remarkable digestant and attitude that has been assumed by the Vatican officials In this conflict with the French government seems to be that the clergy will lose its pensions 38300 of which have been granted and gazetted since the beginning of this year that all aspirants to the priesthood will be compelled to perform military service and that the taking over of the Epis copal mansions rectories seminaries etc by the state department and the communes will occur Immediately in stead of December 1907 Many priests celebrated mass in the presence of unusually large con gregations but the actions of the au thorities were confined to noting ins fractions of the law and citing the priests and vicars to appear before justices of the peace Everywhere legal notices have been served for the evacuation of the ecclesiastical reel dences the seminaries etc Several of these buildings were abandoned without further ado but a majority of the priests while fully prepared to go announced that they would not depart except under duress In many parishes both In Paris and the interior Catholic laymen came forward and spontaneously filed declarations for the holding of services In the designated churches during the coming year If this practice Is gen erally followed It will be a distinct victory for the government relieving It of the possible necessity of closing the churches and throwing on the clergy the responsibility for the die continuance of public worship A beautiful eight day Se tho mas clockI absolutely free for every one dollar spent n purchase of goods from now until the Jan 2 1007
