Cisco Saturday evening at the homo of Anderson U Short in which Isaac Wright and his son Marcus Wright were both shot and instantly killed by Short There wero no witnesses to the deplorable affair except tho two men who were killed and Short and his wife- Immediately after tho shooting Short canto to town and told about tho shocking tragedy in which ho was the principal actor FrankCarrollCoroner Dr C M Gcorgo went at once to tho scene of tho killing and empaneled a jury and pro ceded to hold an inquest Tho jury returned n verdict that Ike Wright and Mark Wright came to their death from gun shot wounds at the hand of Anderson Short The preliminary examination was hold hero yesterday before Esq H F Hummons and tho fol lowing is a gist of tho evidence introduced at tho trial Shorts little boy and Jewel Wright tho youngest son of Isaac Wright had several quarrels and that Jewel Wright when passing Shorts home on several occasions throw rocks at his chickens and stock The neighbors began to notice tho differences between tho two boys und the two women took it up and started gossip until the matter took on a serious aspect On account of the tales that were told and enlarged every time they repeated a feeling grew up be tween the men From Shorts teSt timony the only evidence wo can got last Saturday afternoon Wright and his son Marcus went to tho home of Short for the pur pose of settling tho trouble According to Shorts statement ho was returning from his field across the road from his house about the middle of the afternoon when ho saw Wright and his son Marcus coming down tho road toward him That they did not speak but he Short went on toward his barn The two Wrights followed him into tho lot Notic ing that they were following him and seeing a determined angry look on their faces ho turnedand started toward tho house Marcus following closo behind him with his hands in his Dockets As Short went through the yard gate Marcus told him to hold up and rushed toward him Atthat Short dropped his bundle of rye and started on a run for tho house Marcus running after him and striking at him with a knife As ho reached tho porch Short called for his wife to bring his gun Hy this time old man Wright was at tho front gate mind as soon as Short got on tho porch began throwing rocks at him saying Gd dmy- ou we have como to settle this trouble or words to that effect Short went in the house got his gun and came out on tho porch Both tho Wrights were standing at tho front gate and kept throw ing rocks at him when ho raised the gun and shot Marcus first then shot old man Wright The neighbors as they learned of the tragedy went to tho scene of the killing and found both bodies lying in the road in front of tho house deadabout twenty feet apart and about twenty or thirty feet west from the front gate Upon investigation seventyfive shot wounds were found in tho body of Marcus Wright and between 40 and 50 on tho body of Isaac Wright A rock was found in the house and several rocks wero foundon the porch and the dents on tho door andside of the house indicated that rocks had been thrown An open knife was found on tho gravel about three feet from tho body of Mar cus Wright nnd an open knife in the pocket of Mr Wright The coat worn by Short that day was cut in tho back and a cut in his shirt and an abrasion of tho skin on his back to correspond tends to show that there must have been n personal encounter Such a crime is horrible to con template but tho evidence is too rambling and meagre to judge tho merits of tho case but from what little is known tho people of the county should take warning from this sorrowful and unfortunate circumstance and put an eternal 5M =1fuictus on gossipimf and tlobe lag that can have no other ending but that of trouble At tho close of Jho examininj trial Justice Harhmons held the defendant to await tho action of tho grand jury atlho August tern of court Application for hit or habeas corpus proceedings jwcn heard by Judge J S Maples and tho defendant was permitted to mako bond in tho sum of 7G00 Wo do not know whether ho will bo able to give bond or notFrom the Hcrryville Carroll County Arkansas Progress Juno 0 Anderson Short was born and reared in Breathitt county and this is tho first instance that we ever heard of either him or any of his people being in any kind of trouble lie was always an up right pcacablo and lawabiding citizen and from our knowledge of Mr Short he must have been goaded to the point of desperation by tho Wrights before ho took such a serious step If the testimony before the jury at his final trial corresponds with the foregoing clipping we predict the speedy acquittal of Mr Short lIe has many friends in Brcathitt county who will bo shocked by tho news of this unfortunate affair The parents of Anderson Short are among tho oldest and most re spected people in Hrcathitt county and only lead two sons Anderson and A II Short of Hcrea Ky No bettor
