Fall Sunday just before services began at the Baptist church one of the stovepipes fell making much dirt and causing a little excitement among the congregation There are two stoves in the room They are and were put in the house in the year 1851 Mr T W Reid of this city was running a tinshop at the time and put the pipes up They have never been taken down since and were as good as new The fact that only wood was burned and the work done in firstclass manner ac counts for the long life of the pipes It was suggested several times to take the pipes down but on account of their history it was day night hunting for coal He found the trouble came from the mines being flooded which prevented the men from working He went from Cincinnati and will do his best to buy enough to last a while Does Splendid Work R Ryan contractor for the new hotel building gave this office a nice order for printed matter Mr Ryan is one of the best draughtsmen and contractors in the south and contemplating building would do well to see him now He is plans for several other to be erected this spring Coal Famine The unexpected prolonged cold spell soon caused the coal dealers to sell what they had on hand and for days this week none could be It looks like it would pay to buy a great quantity of coal during the summer and yard it It cant evaporate or walk away Every the people are greatly inconven iented and sufiering is caused by scarci ty of coal Dealers send in their but they go to the mines just at the time the latter are in their A Pesky Nuisance In our rounds for news we cant help noticing how merchants public officer and other business men are annoyed by loafers These fellows go into a mans house take the chair from his desk rubber neck into any conversation the propSetor may be holding and frequen tly pick up private papers and look over them They lounge around the stove whittle and spit on the floor discuss peoples private affairs and make a nuisance in ten thousand ways Of course a business man dont want to make anyone mad He dosent mind fellows staying in his house if they spend any money lilt patrons of a place seldom stop to lounge The loafer never has any money to spend as he makes nothing lounging about the fire Another annoying feature is the loafers inclination to talk to em and monopolize the time they are paid to put in working A clerk cant keep his mind on his work when some loafer is gasing with him and occupying his attention The loafer problem is one hard to solve and if someone will invent an exterminator he will make a fortune out of It People have hugged the fires and huddled together like sheep The most distressing part is the fact that the coal supply was com pletely exhausted nearly a week ago Dealers have made strenuous effort to get a supply but the mines can not fill the orders One dealer Mr Stone sent wagons to Stanford and brought over enough to last a few days but this was gobbled up in short order his shivering KILLAHNEY Fla Feb 6 1899 Editor Central Record After an absence in of ten years I returned to Ken tucky my native state on the 10th of July last on a visit and a recreation for the summer I needed the for I was very weak and badly run down from long overwork and the long hot summers of Florida After a few days rest at Lexington I went to Germantown Ky Mrs Burdetts old home and remained a few weeks with my good old motherinlaw Mrs Susan I Walton and Jo F Walton her son and his very pleasant family When I had breathed the fresh and balmy atmosphere from the Bracken hills and eaten a few meals prepared in old Kentucky style by Mrs Jo Wal ton an adept at the business I began to feel stronger and more like myself as of bygone became restless and wanted to move around and see the people I did to Fleming county and was there most cordially received by many relations and old acquaintan ces and more than kindly treated and came in close contact with the moun tain air that 1 was used to in earlier days and my health and strength rapidly After being for two weeks in a style most elegant that is understood and practice by few people as well as the county folks I felt that 1 was a man again and wanted to go to work and did accept an employment in a lawsuit After some little I got the harness on and found they pinched and rubbed pretty severe about in spots but after a few weeks of steady pulling things began to feel natural and rather felt again after a layoff of twelve atmosphere mountain hospi ity cordial reception association with Kentucky people and especially the lawyers make fun of him Thackeray had small respect for the worthy class and Dick ens none at all and the feebler novelists imitated their masters Professedly serious writers were nearly as bad a verger was supposed to btt s3nonymous with Ignorance and pretension Per sonally I am inclined to think vergers a much maligned class I have met with ignorance among them but the s are so few that the fingers of one hand would be sufficient to enumerate them 1 have far oftener met with knowledge and enthusiasm that have put me to blushLet me give one instance Once at Ely 1 remarked to the then verger when I had seen a great deal making my modest offering as I spoke that as 1 had to get across London and catch a train to the west I must go The verger gripped me by the arm Young man said he your train may be late and you miss it you can get a bed in the town but God Almighty never cathedral Of course stopped and of course I lost my train The trouble vergers are at to increase their know edge has struck me with amazement There Is one who saving up his scanty wages has made himself personally with the great continental fanes which were built about the same time and in similar style to the cathe dral he so delightfully describes I have frequently had vergers willing to show me round during the hours the building was supposed to be closed and even to light up in order that I might be better able to appreciate some detail or other Oii one point I have found vergers as a ale very big oted I have never met with one who has not affirmed that taken as a whole his church was the interesting and instructive in the kingdom This jealousy is occasionally amusing certain southern town there are two churches The principal one is the but less interesting A friend aslced the verger of the old church whether the other worth seeing Tteluctant ly he admitted It might be but he added with glee it aint got no Norman arches Custodians have sometimes odd ideas One I knew bad made a discovery that had got into the papers One day he got a letter de siring to see these objects with a view of purchasing it was signed by the respected head of the British museum and of course on official paper Is he a Epitomist One of the most return of better times in the horse breeding business is the demand that exists at all the great horse markets for smooth farm chunks weighing from 1200 to 1400 pounds each These horses are taken in bunches into the country and there sold to farmers who have come to the conclusion that old Dall and Bill are no longer able to do the work The old geldings worked well while they were at it and for quite a while at that but they would not last forever and the result is that those farmers who quite breeding altogether 1893 and 1SG4 have now no young things coming on to take the place of the old workers and have to their good money for power to do their spring work Last September when wheat was selling at 64 to 66 cents per bushel the Farmers Home Journal urged farmers to build bins and granaries and hold for an advance A few of them did it bnt the greater number stored or to store with millers giving them the privilege of grinding their wheat whenever they vanted to but still paying storage fees thus taking millers practically out of the market Notwithstanding this silly the farmers wheat has advanced in the last six or eight weeks 10 to 15 cts per bushel If farmerS had held their wheat ttemselves or had not allowed millers to grind it up free the proba bilities are that the advance would have been 35 to 40 cents and that it would have come much Hemp seed is now worth 350 for the best and the price may increase to 5 before sowing as farmers will raise more hemp and tobacco if the present prices in tobacco do not To the Kentucky farmers it is a sad fact that each year sees less hemp raised For the past few years the average has been about 5000 tons It is especially sad to the old farmers who can remember when Kentucky produc ed 40000 tons of hemp This is the re sult of various cases Before the war the cotton output was tremendous and our hemp was required to wrap up the cotton and our hemp was used to tie the covering on the cotton The war came on and destroyed many of the cotton fields so there less demand j for Kentuckys hemp After the war jute was used instead of hemp to make the coverings to the cotton bales Then a law was passed by Congress relieving Manila of its duty In this manner what little hope was had in the hemp as rope corn twine etc vanished Lexington Herald In order to remove paint from win doors take strong
