proposition will carry by a good majority The people realize our helpless condition when visited by the fire fiend and our freqnent deplorable droughts Nearly every summer wa ter has to be hauled from the country for washing and culinary purposesand drinking water is at a premium Any physician will tell you that a great amount of fever and other diseases are caused directly from impure wa ter and poor drainage With the proposed system the water will pass through three of the very latest processes and will be absolutely pure when reaching the consumer Would not be better than that now used from a well or cistern which Is not washed out than once a year We do not think it at all nec essary to argue the tenfold to be derived from this system but ask those who are opposed to it to weigh well the matter before casting a vote What is a few paltry cents additional tax to compare with health cleanliness convenience and absolute protection from fires such as we have in Lancaster e man slbeen Tigers Tail One of the blind tiger cases was tried Friday and resulted in a hung jury all but one juryman wanting t acquit The testimony was furnished by one Church who pulled his men orandum book and swore he bought a bottle of beer from Cicero Humber on August 18 ISM Wednesday at 1048 oclock a m Church swore that he was to get 25 per cent of all fines re covered and if the case was lost he got nothing Humber swore he was a hardworking cullud pusson a strong advocate of the temperance cause and never sold no liker no how This was the sum and substance of the case and we understand the Friday afternoons at 3 oclock Dr McKee Is one of the greatest and best informed ministers in the south and his sermons are always in structive It is not speaking well for the town to say it but religious mat ters were never so lax as now The at the churches has fallen off with surprising degree and some of those who go to church look like they went more from the force of habit than from a sense of duty The town needs a shaking up from centre to and the people should awaken to the gravity of thesituation Cemetery Entrance- A number of ladies met at Masonic Hall to take steps toward having a handsome gate erected at the Lancas ter Cemetery It was found that the design wanted will cost from 450 to 500 It is an archway of beautiful and artistic finish Committees were appointed to solicit subscriptions The Cemetery trustees will make very liberal donation to head the list Nearly everyone approached has con tributed liberally though some as may bo expected refuse to give any thing It has been asked why the Trustees do not foot the entire bill The reason is that it will take most of the money now In their hands to place on all the walks and make oth er which are badlv needed The Trustees will give very liberally but it leaves quite a to be raised Every person having and friends buried here should subscribe liberally to this movement It is the most laudable people preached at the Christian church on Sunday by Elder C E Powell to one of the largest crowds that ever assem bled in this city on such an occasion At the Cemetery the floral offering was profuse and was fittingly of the purity of the spirit which had flown from the tabernacle of clay to the house where there are many Mansions prepared for the pure in heart Her husband Mr Zachariah Elkin a man of God devoted to the a cause of his Master died twentyone years ago She was in her 73rd year and had spent her life in trying to make the world better and those about her happy Although she the Christian virtues in a high degree sacrifice the leading virtue was most perfectly developed for she was never so happy as when trying to make others happy Kind pure gentle had no harsh words to express con cerning others but always had a word of cheer for the despondent and an ex cuse for the wayward In the sanctu of God around the fireside in the social circle and as a leading member of the Ladies Aid Society a powerful church auxiliary her work will live after her and give her a large credit on the ledger of Heaven These state are not overdrawn but they are admitted by all who knew the deceas ed to be literally true Her expres sion of reproof would always cause the tattler to pause and learn to speak well of others Such souls gravitate to God as matter follows a line to ward the center of the earth Though she is now in the company of angels and it would be sinful to wish for her return to this vale of tears it is true that such noble women have done more to make the world better than all the pulpit orators and printing presses in existence These expressions of praise were not reserved until her death as the cus tom has it but they were frequently spoken of her during herlife and the writer can truthfully say that he nee er heard an unkind word spoken of her She was related to some of the larg est and most influential families of the county and they are a Godloving a Godfearing and a Godserving peo pie Her influence on the character of those with whom she was intimate ly associated is most beautifully shown in the life of her three sons Robert and Garret of this county and Dr W S Elkin of Atlanta Ga The death of little Francis Lee daughter of Mr and Mrs Charles F Dcnman cast a gloom over the wide circle of friends of the childs in this city and county Mrs Denman is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Alex West of Lancaster and she frequently visited here bringing the sweet baby with her Francis Lee was a beaut ful child and the pet of not only the immediate family but all their friends and acquaintances In her innocence and purity she has been called to the better land and the heartbroken can find sweet consolation in the words of the Savior who said Suf far little children to come into me and forbid them not for of such is the kingdom of heaven The Nicholasville Journal says Sunday morning Oct 1 1899 at 2 oclock the death angel called and snatched from the loving arms that enfolded it Francis Lee the infant daughter and only child of Mr and Mrs Chas F Denman aged fifteen months The little darling had been ailing sometime and an abscess in the head brought on convul sions and its attendant evils All the loving care and skilled physicians could not preserve the cherished bud of promise and it has been to the Masters garden there to unfold in for it to gaze fondly down into the little turned face and rejoice in the beauty of its smiles and then to give It back to God at His call with the thought that it is our little Fitzhugh in heaven as railroad Mable and his corps of sur still running lines in for the Southern rail extension They their preliminary work tomorrow and move camp toward Stanford halting about midway be tween the two towns surveyors have taken several lines town into consideration and nothing deli nite could be stated even were it that the road would run through this county It looks as if the is to ba built and Danville and county will stand a fljd of winning if they will make proper is built and WQ lose it tile town and county will be sot back inany in the march of progress The road will be worth all it would cost and it is understood that the price would not be burdensom Judge Denny Speaks Judge George penny of Lexington was greeted by a big crowd of his od friends at tile Cpurf Hpuse Friday at ternoon Ho Js a map whq stands high in the estimation of the Garrarfl peoplo and they always turn out when he makes a spaoch either political or in a law ease II is tribute to this home county was quite touching His speech was devoted to the Chinn bill the election law and McChord railroad bill upon which points he dwelt for probably an hour and a He said he had never been hon ored by election or appointment since leaving Garrard and the reason that when a watermelon was cut there was always a lot of republicans who beat him to the slices After the melon they would wrap up the seed arid say Here Denney you take these plant them and next jearyou will have a whole crop of watermelons He said he could the seed to grow The Judge went from here to Ht Ternoij and will make several other either in operation or course of construction sy It will be seen that ho is a pre surveyor and understands his business Tho surveyors are stPl at work In Boyle county and have run severs lines We do not suppose they will have much trouble getting through that but they ViiI have a monkey and parrot time getting past Stanford A gentleman who knows what he is talking about a resident of Lincoln told us that back of runs for several miles a contin uous hill several hundred feet high To get past a tunnel as long as Kings Mountaing tunnel will have to be made This is the only way the other route can be built unless they parallel the L from Stanford out to Brodhoad and then take uu Mr pess presort lino The Danville people are lopping about like a hen on a hot griddle stuf ting the surveyors with large The October wind had a bitter made overcoats necessary Otherwise the weather was all that could be wished and the track was in fine con dition The pacing futurity which should have been a Carmelita was made fa vorite on the next heat selling for 50 field 25 She took the next two heats with but little trouble It took seven heats to decide the 221 trot A schedule of betting by heats shows how bettors tried to hedge May C was original favorite and af tcr winning first heat sold field 8 Could not keep her feet and was practically left at the post after the starter had warned her Searchlight remain ing in Mr S H Bronson of New Haven Ct offered to match his horse Searchlight against any pacer on the track for 2500 to 5000 Also offered to race with any three pacers for 2500 a notable by the breaking of one worlds record and the trotting of a fast half mile over a rather slow track It was in the first heat of the Ashland stake which was regarded as a two horse race be tween Tommy Britton and Peter the Great In the first heat Peter the Great and Tommy Britton showed the greatest burst of seen in a public race when they trotted head and head the half mile in 101K and the second quarter in 29 By many it was considered bad driving and very possibly lost the race for the two heavy favorites They kept together to the last Britton drew away and won by a length all out with Peter also greatly distressed Britton was done for and Bonnatclla who had finished third and fourth in the first two heats took the race rather easily The stock farm purse was won by Endow from a good
