during the past few weeks has had the effect of knocking the bottom out of many business projects which would have been of untold val ue to the state We can sp nk from personal knowledge of one enterprise that would have been of the blessing central Kentucky could hop for and have heard of numerous other moves that have been cut short the projectors calling a halt to see wheth er the state would be left upon the map when the gang saw fit to lay down their arms and let business proceed and the people have i rest Matters in the state are undoubtedly in a de plorable shape and by the time the special correspondents get through coloring them up for print in the east ern papers it makes the nation look upon usas a band of uncivilized cut throats and heathens The question now is how long will the good citizens stand by and let their interests be throttled by a gang of sel fish politicians Which is of the most im portance to our citizens whether Jim Jones shall draw the governors salary or shall these politicians be shoved a side and the vast resources of thestate developed and business brought into our borders The time has come for the people to give political cribfeed ers a back seat All this trouble at Frankfort has been brought about by the ambition of a few politicians Had they kept out the contest would have been settled by the legislature in a few days time and none of the present state of affairs existed The leaders have been spurred on to a great extent by the wailings of partisan newspa pers over the state and their has had the effect of keeping some of the citizens up to a high tension of excitement If such editors would stop and consider which is the interest to the people who is the reputation and progress of pur state they would have counseled a peaceful solution of the matter instead of trying to incite their readers to shoulder a gun and take the life of their fellow men We dont know how matters will end at the capital and it makes little difference us personally who shall warm the executive chair but it does seem that the people should awaken to the necessity of puting a stop to the warfare and endeavor to quiet matters and work for the ad vancement of the state instead of the moves of their bullies at Frankfort A MAN learns his politics and from Isis father and other men but his religion from his mother writes an American Mother in the February Ladies Home Journal No vicious manhood can quite kill the faith which sprang up in his soul when he knelt a little child at her knee night or was hushed to sleep on her breast while she sang that sweet story of old when Jesus was here among men In earlier times in this country a mother had little work out side of her house and children She watched her boy day and night to keep him near to God and out of the devils clutches It was she who told him of the Babe and the Cross out of the old Book which lay on the table beside her bed He saw her turn to it when she was happy when she was wretched when she was old and dying So it came that there was nothing so near to God in that as his her Bible and her savior But that woman is long ago dead and buried The modern mother talks of her as of some coarse animal whose ignoble life was starved out in a cage Her own feet are set in a large room Her ho rizen takes in the world She political caucuses civic affairs countless domestic and foreign Art literature society and helpless humanity claim her She rises every morning knowing botched old world is waiting for her to set it right t e R ONE Yrak CitRUS gre est mouthing must go in them if these issues are right The preachers are to be leaders and teachers of the people in these reforms and in that pertains to good morals good government and in fact that Christianity teaches But the great majority of time preachers in this country as well as great majority of the Christian voters are extremely particular to keep their religion and their politics great way apart How often do we hear them come over the old and hackneyed It wont do to mix relig ion and politics In this connection I am often reminded of an anecdote told by my prohibition friend Hon He was attending a of his Presbytery and was accused by one of his fellow presbyters of talking politics too much on the day Bro Lusk immediately replied the politics my brother that I believe in and practice can and ought to be talked on the Sabbath as well as any other day and if I had such pol itics as you have I wouldnt talk it on Monday much less on Sunday In the days of the good old and prophets the people had their politics and religion all mixed up together and God hasten the day when our preachers and all other Christians shall carry the two things in the same bundle So we in these latter days who have a movement with a political party behind it for the purpose of de greatest enemy of Amer ican liberty and manhood look to the preachers for sympathy and than to any other class of voters Rut sad to say we do not get very much of either The most liberal estimate is that not over 25 per cent of the preachers vote with us But not only in Bible days do we see the people mix ing religion and politics but in our own good old colonial days church and profane History tells us of many noble and notable instances where the preachers in assembled religious bodies took the lead in counseling the people as to their civil rights and in taking steps to throw off by force of arms if necessary the yoke of King George That doubtless was politics of the right kind no kick against making then except it might be their friends the tories So we think that these exist now and has existed lo these 25 or 30 years or more condition of affairs in these States which just as loudly for preachers one and all to take the lead in ridding the country of earths greatest curse and crime the legalized rum business business is in safe hands Many of the men who tall that way that is say it wont do to mix em are not overstocked with religion and thus have very little of that article to 1 always think 1 know which a is on be he preacher or layman when I him and see him so so long does he the devil know that his mix with anything These same tho always have on hand a full stock of politics But we hear many real good Christian men singing the same song and no doubt they think they are best serving the Lord in that kind of religion They ought to know that they are serving the devil in their politics True Christianity ought to teach and doesteach righteousness and purity in politics as well as in pri vate life purity andconscience in the voting booth as well as in the prayer meeting But we all know where the trouble lies but dont know or want to know how to apply the remedy We all know that these men who make up our national and state issues and the candidates for us to vote for do not attend prayer meetings and they well know 90 per cent or more of the That it is sometimes better to sell your tobacco at home rather than ship the city market was demonstrated the past week One of our prominent tobacco buyers recently tried very hard to purchase a crop of the weed from one of our largest growers offering what might be termed a fancy price and at the same time presenting an argument to show why the grower would have to sell for less on the city market because of the manner in he would have to assort the ship it as a single crop The purchase was not effected however and last week the said grower sold his crop on the Cin market for nearly threefourths a cent a pound less than the home offer Falmouth Pendletionian An Editors Life Saved by Cough Remedy During the early part of October 189G I contracted a bad cold which settled on my during the past year the rate of more than a pound per person and we now use fully fifty pounds annually for each in tIle United States j in those days retail grocers bought and sold coffee in its green state and each roasted it for himself an iron pot over an ordinary fire course it was impossible to obtain uniform results from such crude moth and from hick of experience and stupidity the coffee wits far less iatable but there was one great advan tage in tins method viz that the cof was freshly roasted and did not have time to lose the aroma and per feet strength by being exposed to the air This is a feature of the coffee question to which too little attention has been paid Roasted coffeo loses in quality and aroma from the very mo ment it leaves the roaster If it can be kept in a tightlyclosed receptacle this is largely avoided but it ought never to be placed in a wooden box or j bin possessing any odor for coffee is peculiarly susceptible to surrounding odors and when exposed to the air all its delicate aroma is rapidly dissipated There is a very famous brand of cof now before the public called Lion Coffee which has come into favor with consumers not alone because of its purity and high quality but by reason j doubtless of the fact that immediate ly after roasting in the mills it is tightly closed in a sealed package practically air proof Thus the aroma is carefully preserved All adultera tion is impossible No impurities can creep into the closedpackage and full weight is absolutely guaranteed Without a word being spoken the purchaser of a package of
