the political contests the people of Lancaster as a rule are going along in quiet way attending to their busi not worrying over the Of course most everyone feels an interest in the matter but those who have any business to attend to are pursuing the even tenor of their way and find little time to discuss the question The majority want peace and amicable settlement of the matter but they dont quit work to discuss the whys and wherefores Of course there are some who have else to do who hug the store stoves and do a powerful chance of gassing but as they only listen to one another no harm is done The store stove orator may hold sway but business men waste few words on the case Our Anniversary With this issue THE RECORD en ters the eleventh year of its existence It was established in 1800 by Jas R Marrs who held the reins until 1895 when the present editor took charge the trying times of 95 and SO and the many adverse pre dictions we are still doing business at the same old stand and if the court knows herself we will be right here pegging away when Gabriel sounds the Assembly with the golden trumpet THE RECORD as has all other papers published in Lancaster had many things to contend with that do not confront papers of many other towns that is the ungovernable desire of some business men to send work away that can be done here just as well and as cheap considered as itcan be gotten anywhere else We are aware of the fact that a man has a perfect right to send his work any where he pleases but the rub comes when this same man the home paper to grind an axe for him The bitterest pill to swallow is to hear some one say I can get that work done in Louisville or Cincinnati for less Yes you can And we can buy suit of clothes a bottle of hair a pound of tea a sausage mill or even be burried cheaper in the city than in the country But thats not the point We are for home first last and all the time and it will be many a day we hope before we will give any money to and a practical moral sentiment and the two are far apart Theoretically every community the punishment of crime in nine out communi ties the criminal is shielded from pun ishment by a mistaken and a misplac sympathyLet worthless vagabond who has outraged public morals he has become an execration at the mouths of all men be arrested on the charge of crime he will at once hero of a certain sicKly sentimentality which declares him no more than others of like character In have not been punished this criminal must not be punished The class which crime is engendered are not slow to cultivate their kind of sympathy Just now we are a and interesting specimen of in us see For some months past there has been an unusually active effort on the of our city officers to arrest the wholesale illegal sale of liquors At very first blow that drew blood there arose a howl and the man who had been most openly breaking the cried most sympathy We are told that one man is bring made the scapegoat for the town That a war of persecution is going on save him from persecution Or being properly interpreted a demand is made that he shall not be mo lested in his crime because forsooth others have escaped the vigilance of the law Now I submit to the thinking citi zenship of Lancaster this proposition No man who breaks the law can be persecuted till his prosecution fixes punishment beyond what the LAW provides shall be punished for violating the law only when all other breakers are properly punished It rather says that for every olfense there shall be punishment The escape of one crime or one criminal does not excuse any other The selling of liquor in the city of Lancaster is a crime and punishable undo one of three laws 1 The city ordinance which sixes the punishment at a tine of not less than 25 nor more than 100 for each separate quantity sold 2 The statute law of prohibi tion to sell without license which fix es the punishment at from 20 to 100 fine for each separate offense or 3 the local option law which fixes the punishment at from 100 to 200 tine for each separate quantity sold Now tape any one of these laws you will and it will at once be apparent that no man who sells whisky or beer in this town can be persecuted for it un til he has been made to pay at least 20 for every time he has sold a drink And the law requires that he shall be punished that much whether any man is ever caught or not But there is another aspect to this plea for sympathy Does the man who sells liquors deserve Sound morals and sound sense alike answers that he does not deserve sympathy even when to the utmost extent of the law He engages in this business in deliber ate violation of a law which he knows to exist It is a business which he knows will hurt the private and pub lie morals of his fellowcitizens It is an effort to enrich himself at the ex pense of others He undertakes to shield himself by the perjury of his customers He knows the risk of tined and charges for the vile a price to enable him to pay his tines He does not even deserve sympathy from the men to whom he sells The more than pay even in money for a they get There is one who does need sympa thy not the blind tiger proprietor but his victim The youth who is taught to spend his nights in carousal whose best elements of character are undermined who is taught there how to sow the seeds of that whirlwind of misery which he is to reap terawhile and told how his honor is at stake to protect the nefarious business of his friend The mothers of those boys need sympathy if broken hearts and tearfilled eyes and disappointed hopes are worthy of sympathy Our young maidens need sympathy for who knows but that they are to be come the victims of the tigers victim If he keeps his midnight debauchery secret from others more skilled in the worlds ways how can your pure young girl know She may never know till as a wife and mother she begins to the fruits of the tigers sowing in abuse poverty and tears gentlemen of our official board these blind tigers must be made still so blind indeed that they will see no more victims in this our fair city J C MASSEE Question Aiiivcrcd Yes August Flower still has the Jar lovely ladies made us a call being their first visit to a printing oilice they were much in terested and asked many questions Whats all those little tricks ried one as she rubbed her dainty tin gels down a galley of solid nonpa reil knocking it four ways for Sunday She was told that was to be used in a prayer meeting to be held shortly their visit Another sweet bunch of calico placed her dainty foot upon the treadle of a Gordon press and was making fine headway turning it she looked down and saw the heel of her shoe dangling on the other side of the treadle She proceeded to shower blessings upon the defenseless head of the devil but just then a scream from the other lady reveals the fact that in peeping to the top of the news press she had come in con tact with the ink fountain and a black streak about four inches wide ran across the front of a pretty lightcol ored dress This capped the climax White took to the woods the devil jumped out the window the foreman went up the chimney
