Tire People roused to tine Impor lance of Securing the Railroad Have Gone to Work in Earnest Some of the local hustlers decid ed to have a public rail road meet ing Monday and invited lion II L Underwood of Middlesboro to address the crowd Tie very kindly consented to come Mr Underwood is a man of wi business experience and has had much to do with promoting such en terprises as we are now after At the meeting Monday he was introduced by Capt Ilerndon who stated the object of the meeting and put in some sledgehammer blows for the road Mr Underwood started out by tell ing of a number of towns where they thought rail roads were bound to come but when the people refused to lend any assistance the lines ran around them and they were left in the woods lIe said that rail roads were not inclined to come where they ware not welcome and that they would frequently build longer routes in order to reach points where the people were interested and felt toward them What the country and especially Kentucky needed was more rail roads to develop her vast re sources and afford the farmer and pro ducer better facilities to transport their products to market No com munity is going to suffer from too man rail roads Along the new route is a section of country that is depen dent upon the blue grass region for its meat corn and in fact all her market stuff Nothing can be raised in that country except timber As Garrard is the first blue grass county on the line this country would nat urally come here for tleir The new road will put Garrard on a direct and short line to the coal ilelds where the best coal in tho south lies in abundance This item In itself would save Garrard county people many dollars a year lie then spoke if the road being a trunk line from Chicago and St Louis to the south and Mantic seaboard The one hundred feet wide right of way means a dot ble tracked road This would give a direct line for farmers to ship their grain and stock direct to Louisville Cincinnati Chicago St Louis or to any city along the southern Atlantic seaboard He called especial attention to this fact We regret very much that we reproduce his remarks in full as they were certainly to the point and convincing Mr Underwood is in at Middlesboro and went toXew York with the committee to see Spencer when we thought the road would run to the Magic lie is thoroughly posted on the matter hiving had much experience in prc matters and beihg familiar with Kentucky Capt Ilerndon made some well tuned remarks as did also Messrs A K Denny and L F Hubble The meeting had the effect of awakening the people to the importance of go ing after the road to win and they are now doing so Danville is on a still hunt fur the road and while they are not saying much they are sleeping with both eyes open and if this right of way is not over pretty soon they will come mighty near knocking the persimmon Tile right of way through the will cost in the neighborhood of twenty thousand doll us some familiar with the lands placing it at sixteen or seventeen thousand The people are aroused to the trace o the matter and by next issue we firmly balievi we will be able to say the most of it has been subscribed We do not think it at all necessary for TIm RECORD to repeat its oft statements of the value tile road will be to Garrard as our readers are familiar therewith The only trouble has been that some thought the road would not be built and did not care to waste time on it Now that all boubt has been dispelled we believe every citizen of the county will put his shoulder to the wheel and push the matter to a head We have bicn prophesying with such accur ay of late that we will venture to wake another It is this It will not be six weeks after Garrard announces that she is ready to deliver the goods before active preparations for of the road are begun Set this down in your memorandum and see if THE RECOKD knows what it is talking about this do not feel it necessary to to our readers for taking up so much space with rail road talk as t e are fullyaware of the of securing the road Our columns are open to anyone who wants to air hs views on the subject If we said the
