when our citizens hope to extend hospisality to the vet eran heroes Possibly of the many visitors may wish to locate in our midst Now in order to make our city attractive let every citizen a committee to see that every old fence and every out house is white washed or painted Urge your neigh bors to clean up their premises remov ing all trash brickbats and stones from yards and streets adjoining Set the example by immediately going to work yourself If you have a neigh bor who is too poor to white wash give him lime and lend him your brush and your assistance if he de sires Let every business man clean up his place of business and use paint and water freely The City Council can improve the appearance of the streets by cleaning up all loose stone and ditching the streets in numerous places The work done on Stanford street is a sample of how much can be done by a little work All our streets should be put in the possible Death of Former Lancaster Lady News was received here last week of the death of Mrs J A Morgan who was Miss Abbie Yantis formerly of this city The family resided at Para gould Arkansas Paragould papers say she was sick only a short timeand the death was a great shock to the community She was a daughter of Mr and Mrs W A Yantis who for many years resided in Lancaster The deceased was an unusually pretty girl and one of rare intellect and fine ed ucation The greater part of her schooling was received at the old Franklin Institute in Lancaster and while in that institution she always stood at the head of classes and re ceived the highest marks in all other departments Like her estimable mother she took a leading part in church work and was an active worker in the cause temperance She leaves beside the husband five small chil dron The griefstricken family have the deepest sympathy from their Jven tucky friends in this great It is heartrending to part with those we love but we should remem ber that God moves in a mysterious way His wonders to perform A Card To the patrons of the Graded School We have been out of town for and we regret exceedingly to learn that certain republicans have reported that politics would get into the school if we were elected trustees and that opposition will not lose a republican vote We hold the school to be too sacred for such an and we are able to prove that leading republicans were asked to sup port us at the beginning which de monstrates that our hands are clean in the matter of bringing politics into the race Wo are interested in the school for our children and the gen welfare We are in the interest of no party faction or faculty but if elected we will consider experience credentials and general fitness in the selection of teachers for the of the school We would favor no changes unless they would be for tho proper interest and of the school The office is not very lucrative but s nee unjust issues haye been thrust into the campaign we ask your and in doing the best for our own children which we would surely do your children would be equally benefited We were not aware that men of our political convictions were ineligible to hold the office of school trustee as you have some democrats on the and valuable specimen It is supposed that it was once the property of some old Virginia settlers whose ancestors vere English music Festival The Louisville Music Festival to be given May 14th 15th and Boston Festival Orchestra and the Music Club Chorus will present three great compositions SQUARE IN TIlE FACE We are now in clear sight and view of the railroad which we all want and at the point of losing ijfc Those owning land through which the road if built is to run have become some what liberalized in regard to the rights of way hub they are yet beyond the reach of the money raised The mon ey raised is yet far below the require ments and unless the of money and the owners of land can be brought much nearer together we will soon learn that the road which is sure to be built over some route has gone through a county whose people know how to appreciate the value of a railroad It is said by many that TIlE ROAD IS SUItE TO BE BUILT AND WE WILL GET IT AND DAMAGE ALSO This view is pressed and impressed on theta by those unfavorable to the Garrard county route This would be an in telligent view if there were no other route over which the road could be constructed But it is not intelligent by any means when it is considered that it is only a choice of routes with the advantages naturally in our favor but with money offers enough in favor of the other route to overcome those advantages GOOD PEOPLE WHAT ARE you GONG TO DO Tins is YOUR VERY LAST CHANCE Examine a map a railroad map or any other map and you will see that our county is not on the line of any railroad now pro jected or that is ever likely to be con struced If we fail to get this road we are left out side in stead of having rival roads through our county to compete against each other in shipment of freights at the same time giving us nil the obvious advantages our substance will always be absorbed by neighboring counties each drawing our trade and freight shipments away from us thus depriv ing us of the money which we should spend at home and of home markets which it is the duty of every citizen to encourage and build up Come up now in the spirit of liberality or lay down a few dollars in money or a few acres of land and get it all back fourfold or demand damages and lose out entirely The building of the road is promised Only on the CONDI TION WE GIVE THE RIGHT OF WAY We our means to secure the right of way are not able to pay the prices in the way of damages IT WILL REQUIRE FOUR HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLAR TO CONSTRUCT TUB ROAP THROUGH GARHAItD COUNt TV The farmer will find that at least twenty thousand dollars must be expended by the railway company for each mile of road constructed through his laud expended right on his farm The men who construct the road the stock used in hauling must be well to to the hjgenic condition of our every year Lancaster is with several cases of typhoid fe ver and other contagieus diseases and it will generally be found due to some visitation of the uses of way to call the attention of the public to this fact It is a that should require calling of the public attention and should not demand any compulsion The general interest that every one has for the welfare of the community should alone be sufficient inducement It is the duty of the cityauthotities to see that all the streets and alleys are thoroughly cleansed and all owners to have their social intercourse and for the opportunity it afford each year to visit at a low rate places of Interest hi parts of the United States With this plan In view the meeting last year was held at Los Angeles It meets this year at Charleston S The benefits accuring therefrom go not only to the teacher but alsD to the pupils who after all perhaps the greatest gainers from the rest theteacier gets and from the increased capacity for work with winch he returns from the meeting The meeting this year at Charleston Is one special import Since the trying days of Reconstruction period the educators north and south been rather slow about till cemenciug process which has gone on more rapidly with other classes but the wonderful display of enthusiasm upon the part of the southern teacher in working for the success of the Charleston meeting Indicates au entire y new era in the history of the American School and gives promise that the Charleston meeting will be the greatest convention of the N E A that has ever taken place in its history It is said that a membership of over five thousand is already assured from the Southern States AS a meeting place Charleston is of nunsial Interest to students of history particularly that of the Revolt lonary period Tftu first colony in South Carolina was established In 1070 the great John Locke preparing the scheme of government In the War of the Revolution the State was a leader among the thirteen colonies and it still points with un diminished pride to such names as Kings Mountain Camded and Tort Mon tie The latter and more unfortunate lays of COs are marked too by many a brave and straggle against the Inevitable All this is to be seen in the present modern city in many interesting landmarks from his tonic St Michaels and the statue of Calhoun the great modern defences iccently erected which make the harbor the most completely defended on our great Coat line Charleston iu summer is delightful The floral display in city gardens and along the country drives is said to excel ia beauty and attractiveness anything that is produced else where in the United States The cOTitinuons incoming breeze from the sea keeps the pleasant on the warmest days Xo sunstrokes or stilling heat are here to be foun 1 such as conventions often labor under northern inland cities The trip to Charles ton from the north via the Queen Crescent Route and its connecting lines is as as the visit to the city itself National Eduational Association tickets via the Queen C esceut Route are so arrang ed that one eau visit Chattanooga Chick mauga Military Park and Lookout Mountain as well as the mountain city of Ashville and the famous Laud of the Sky The stop over privileges onjth se tickets are most complete indeed and the historic points at
