like Europe seems to vary inversely with the temperature of the climate At Tientsin and the northern ports it takes much longer to load and unload cargo than at the ports of the Yangtse and the husbandry of the soil shows less care in the northern provinces than it does lower down In fact the northerners seem inclined to hibernate and allow the rigor of the winter to unman them instead of spurring them to activity Still after watching gangs of coolies working in many places it may safely be asserted that the aver age zest and genuineness of their labor are superior to those of any nation with perhaps the exception of our own says the Little Chronicle The blind in Peking and blind men and women are use drums to announce their coming and warn other people to get out of their way By the difference in the sound as it is reflect ed back from walls or pavements it is said that the blind Chinamen can al ways locate themselves exactly so that they need no guide China is the land where everything is upside down Thus in Canton the women act as sailors and boatmen while the men are employed as cham and seamstresses In salutation the Chinaman shakes his own hand instead of that of his visitor As a mark of respect he puts his hat on instead of taking it off Their sign boards are perpendicular instead of horizontal In reading Chinese print it is necessary to begin at the right hand side at the bottom and read to the left and up In 1517 A D the first Europeans ar rived in China In 1575 Jesuit mis sionaries were sent to China from RomeThere are three principal religions in Taoism and Con fucianism The latter is almost forms and ceremonies The drama is popular all over China a religious celebration takes place before the temple of a god a the atrical performance usually follows The stage is erected in the street and in front of this the people gather and listen for hours to the declamations of the actors whose themes are usually of a historical character There are not many permanent theaters Actors and acrobats can be hired cheaply and at every dinner where strangers are a theatrical performance is of the entertainment Recently Pilgrims Progress Las been
