door to post oflice Christmas of the tick and Poor We have an idea that Christmases they are celebrated in homes of great wealth must be ideal writes Edward Bok in a plea for a simpler simpler celebration of Christ the December Ladies Journal Yet often as the factno more lonesome Christmas days are spent anywhere than in these homes of plenty Riches on are often like sweet bells out of tune Nothing was simpler than the first Christmas Day and its strongest appeal to our natures although we do not always know is because it was so simple Nothing is so fatal to our deepest and truest enjoyment as the realization that we can have whatever we will simply for the wishing or All value is lost then It is a hard truth for those who have little to believe that the greatest happiness of life is with them that it is not with those who have abundance The more we have the less we actually it There is a law of that comes in there The lives of those who have abundance are more complicated than are the lives of those who have little We are wont to say Oh well Id like to try once having all the money I wanted Thousands have said the same thing only to have their wish come true and to realize that happiness lay not along the way they thought It is strange how the poor envy the greater and fuller happiness of those who have less The woman of simplest means is the happiest woman on 25th of as the birthday of the Saviour Pope Julius had an investigation made A D 350 when it was definitely agreed that such was the date The custom of decorating and presenting gifts with the compliments of the season is a cherished one in which all delights and this feeling of joy that pervades the Christian world is a potent argument in favor of the of Him upon whom all of our hopes for eternal happiness are based The emblems the simple loaf and cup to commemorate His death also bear the impress of the supernatural He been a human hero the chiseled marble would have been erected to His memory As a nation we the birthday of our heroes with pomp and in gorgeous array If we thus celebrate the birth of Washing ton for saving our colonies from oppression how much more should we celebrate the birth of One who came to save the whole world from the oppression of Satan Surely all should look reverently upon the day and spend it in meek and joyous fes tivities and songs of praise The custom of engaging in and unholy practices should be disregarded as unfit for that or any other day It should be a day of smiles and good cheer calling forth the higher and nobler impulses of our nature and doing all we can to allevi ate suffering humanity and gladden the hearts of the unfortunate and the afflicted for in this we would His blessed character and in a measure make the yorld better and happier His mission was one of love if our celebration of His birth should be in acts and words of love The tiring of guns and the clash of arms may celebrate the birth of the military chieftain but not of one who opposed force and who commanded His to put up his sword and to not evil He is to the spiritual world just what the orb of day is to the physical world without His teaching and hallowed influence the spirit would become contaminated with evil influences and lose its and power as darkness destroys the beauty and vitality of vegetation This beautifying effect of Christian influence is manifested in national well as individual affairs We see Christian nations advanced in that exalts and embellishes life while Pagan nations grope in darkness and indulge in the of the dark ages So merry Christmas is upon us and let us take a pride in celebrating it as the most important season in the annals of history As the season which sheds an effulgent beam of light through the dark and loathsome tomb and points to a higher and more glorious existence Our merchants have furnished prizes to suit the taste and the purse of everybody mas trees have been filled with prizes for the rich and the poor nnd the country is happier It is good to mel low our souls by deeds of kindness and words of love It brings us nearer to one another and especially nearer to God and the meek and lowly Naza rene The very meaning of Christmas is selfsacrifice selfdenial Gifts that cost us nothing do not bring the real Christmas joy The giving should be cheerful for the Lord only loves a cheerful giver The sordid grudging and mercenary element should be en tirely eliminated and the giver should love the recipient as God loved the world when He gave His son that we BUCKEYE Rev A J Pike Man Embarramied a Chicago Attorney Who Went Hunting i Two Chicago attorneys who were en joying a hunting and fishing trip in northern Wisconsin recently chanced to stop over night at Tomahawk a vil on the Indian reservation While at the hotel a gun belonging to one of rthe lawyers was stolen The hunter made inquiries and became satisfied that a drunken Indian who acted as hostler at the hotel had taken it The lawyer charged the red man with the theft and finally the Indian confessed that he knew where the gun was Aft er a great deal of persuasion lie named a certain place where it was hid den says the Chicago Inter Ocean The owner of the gun accompanied by the Indian went after the weapon but it was not there The lawyer then had a warrant issued for the arrest of the Indian and had service made This had its effect and the red man calling the attorney to one side give up the gun for a pint of whisky 3t happened the hunters had several bottles of good old rye among their stores and a pint bottle was turned over to the Indian who soon produced the gun But the constable who held 1he warrant insisted on taking his prisoner to What fur White man got urn gun said the Indian Yes replied the officer but you stole it and you must go to prison Put Injun in cabboose tell chief white man give Injun whisky white man pay big fine and go to prisonThis was a new wrinkle That was the law The Chicago lawyer was to be taken to Madison before the United States court The attorney in terceded for the red man who seeing this declared A Let Injun go not nuf Injun money he no tell and he stuck that he would inform if not paid and finally as the cheapest way out of the difficulty the Chicago man paid the Indian 10 Have Vlll of Their Own That the women of China do not lack courage is proved by the fact that they sometimes seek suicide as relief from unhappy marriages and uncongenial husbands would frequent ly be murdered were it not for special punishments ignominious and slow devised persons who never outlive their love for toys in some form The largest and most elaborate toy in the world is in the possession of a wealthy Baltimore man It is nothing moreor less than an automatic land scape a large country vii Kfges churches windmills lakes rivers and all the details of country sceneryWhen this mammoth toy is put in boats dart here and there the lake pulled bylusty rowers carts lumber along the roads the miller mounts a ladder carrying sacks of grain on his back church bells ring and children play in the village streets a large Ferris wheel turns slowly round with its burden of aerial passengers and trains shriek into tunnels and over bridges The power which puts the landscape into motion is supplied by water motors hidden away under the toyAn equally elaborate toy is the of a wealthy retired army officer of Berlin who is able by its means to enjoy within the security of his own home all the excitement of a campaign says TitBits He has a fullyequippeil army of many hundreds of soldiers cavalry infantry and batteries of ar tillery Every incident of battle is reproduced with startling realism- A Russian prince has a mechanical theater which has cost him over 50 000 The stage is fitted with every accessory in the shape of scener and machinery that modern skill has de vised and the actors are figures as large as life all dressed as sumptuous ly and appropriately as their living prototypes The princes repertoire covers almost all the most popular operas and it is only necessary to press a button to set the whole marvelous machinery in mo tion The actors make their entry on the stage and play their various parts with appropriate gestures while a number of phonographs supply the vocal part in the voices of theleading operatic singers Subsidence oftlie Bermudas According to the results of studies by Prof A E Verrill the beautiful Ber muda islands are merely the remnant of an island very much larger than the present entire group but which has sunk in the ocean The original island had an area of 300 or 400 square miles whereas the Bermudas today are only about 20 square miles in area a comparatively recent period says Prof Verrill the Bermudas have sub sided at least 80 or 100 feet Their base is the summit of an ancient volcano while their surface IB composedof shell sand drifted into hills by the wind and consolidated by infiltration Youths Companion Canada Defense Canada is selfsupporting but in event of an attack being made upon the Dominion Britain would have to I provide both army ana navy for its defense Albany There Are Many Deadly FolHon That Are Decidedly Blue T Did you ever notice that there is no blue food We eat things green and red yellow and violet flesh fish or plants in all the colors of the rainbow except blue Many deadly poisons are blue in color such as bluestone or the deadly nightshade flower The color stands in our slang for everything mis erable and depressing But this is only one of a thousand queer facts about colors Heat a bar of iron and the particles of the metal are set in motion shaking violently one against another Presently the surrounding ether is set in motion in large slow waves rolling through the air like the waves of the sea until they break upon our skin and give us the sensation of heat As the iron gets hotter other waves are set in motion in lightning speed and these break upon the eye giving the sensation of red light says the St Louis Republic The redhot iron getting still more heated throws out other sets of waves still smaller and more rapid orange yellow green blue indigo violet all the colors of the rainbow The eye can not tell one from another the whole bundle of rays mixed up gives us an impression of white That is the glow from the whitehot iron and such is the light from the stall greater of the sun Sunlight is a bundle of rays and orange green blue indigo and violet all mixed together The mixture of all colors is white light the absence of all colors is utter darkness Xow pass a of sunlight through a drop of water and the colored rays are split up and thrown in different The sunlight shining through many drops of falling rain after a shower is all split up into colors and the result is the gorgeous rainbow The scattered spray of a sea wave of a waterfall or a mountain makes little rainbows caused in the same way Each kind of light has its own special uses The red rays of light make the leaves of the trees to grow and hasten all rotting and decaj Moreover if you cut off the red rays plants will grow with goldenbrown leaves instead of greenThe sea is blue because the water re flects the blue rays of light but seas are green because the blue light is mixed with the yellow from sand and stones at the bot tom In this green light of shallow water all seaweeds grow and for want of the red rays they have golden and tawny leaves Green and red seaweeds are as rare as blue tree leaves At this Tate land plants grown under green glass ought to turn golden brown like seaweed They do Experiment has shown that under green glass plants grow nearly as well as under clear sun lightUnder red glass nearly nil plants grow four times as quickly as under white light grow to four times their usual height and throw out a fine dis play of green leaves This is clear proof that the red rays of sunlight cause the green leaves to grow This discovery will be of immense help to gardeners who want to force their plants and to farmers trying to induce early crops ofvegetablesBlue has a directly opposite Plants will neither grow nor die they languish and yet remain alive The blue makes them sleep The effect is exactly that of moonlight and star light when all plants take their nat ural rest Sole Exception The Xew scribes in Century the deious course of the Rhine The birthplace of the Rhine is wrapped in mystery It is given to few to dam with their fingers the first tricklings of a great river How many English have traced the shy Thames to her source or the Mersey Research is apt to be tedious To most of us as to our artist M Andre Castaigne the Rhine flows out of Constance lake and after giving three leaps over the rocks at Schaffhausen steps westwarJ with a cheerful alacrity as if it meant like a good American to see Paris before it died till it reaches Basal if suddenly mindful of the father land it turns hastily to the right and pushes its way up the map of Europe past Strasburg Mannheim Koblenz and Cologne by Dusseldorf and Wesel till it reaches the low countries where again its course becomes obscure What happens to the Rhine at Utrecht What gar my father no send me to Utrecht was the oft repeated of Bartoline Saddletree doomed to keepshop in the Bess Wynd instead of drawing pleas in Parliament square I can but repeat Mr Saddletrees plaint Had my father sent me to Instead of Koblenz I might be an authority on the subject As it Is I can but feebly demur to the modern notion that puts on the Rhine but have to admit that just as I have neverset eyes on the TomaSee in Switzerland where ut a height of wellnigh 8000 feet the baby Rhine springs into being so have I never seen either of its outlets into the German ocean or the Zuyder Zee My Rhine begins at Sehaifhausen and gets no far ther than Wesel for as for Rotterdam it is as all the world knows on the Mans and as for Utrecht where the river is said to divide I was never sent either law of geography Ills Rule of Action John Henrj said Mrs Bickers to her husband it is time we returned the Gilkinsons call I have no
