Mercantile Lines A Popular Trade Centre Commercial Advantages Offered by the Enter prising Metrop9lis of Garrard to Citizens of the Sur rounding Country Interesting Sketches of Establishments Do ing the Bulk of the Business Brief Bi ographies of WideAwake Busi ness and Professional Men Home pride is natural Every good citizen takes pride in the advancement in material respects of the community in which he lives Surely then the people of Lancaster may be pardoned for feeling especially gratified that their town has become so popularly known as a thriving community of prosperous business enterprises Since Lancaster first became known to the outside world as a location of bright and encouraging surroundings it has never striv en for any licticious boom out its prosperity has steadily increased in propor tion to the development of the surrounding country The prime impetus of its prosperity is its eligible situation surrounded as it is by the most fertile farming lands in Kentucky While Garrard county of which Lancaster is seat is capable of raising a diversity of crops it is chiefly noted as a hemp and tobacco growing section The remarkable success of these two crops in Garrard County is a matter upon which she congratulates herself and she is proud to publish to the world In the raising of hemp the lands of this county have yielded more abundantly than any section ofsimilar area in the state The crop of 1900 which was handled in 1901 amounted to 2800000 pounds and the crop of 1901 which is now being marketed will exceed 3000000 pounds The yield is constantly increasing each year the average for the past one per acre being 1200 pounds Seventyfive per cent of the hemp seed used in cultivation in the state is produced in Garrard County Over 2000000 pounds of tobacco was raised last year or about 1500 pounds to the acre an yield and one of which any section may feel proud Of this nearly loOO000 pounds was handled here in Lancaster the average price received being Gj cents per pound A vast portion of the hemp of the county is also marketed here the prices ranging from 500 to 530 per 112 Ibs all of which goes to prove that the buyersand shippers of Lancaster are live wide awake men who provide conditions which attract farmers to this marketfrom all parts of the county And since the buyer and grower are as necessary to each other as the consumer and producer are to the life of any industry credit must be shared by both branches to whose energy and ability the remarkable success is due A drive through the county will convince one of the thrift and enterprise of the farmers the fine farms well cultivated and well stocked good residences and out buildings speak plainer than words of their energies Backed up by this excellent farming community and with active business and professional men intelligent and social citizens good railroad facilities a splendid graded school churches of all denominations and with fine improvements Lancaster is indeed blessed Lancaster has always taken an active interest in educating her youth and the graded school is a sourcaof great pride to our citizens It is not a city institution but is supported by taxation levied on the property within what is known as the school district and which embraces considerable territory outside the city limits The in stitution is presided over by Prof J H Patterson an educator of experience and ability assisted by a competent corps of teachers As a typical temper ance town there is no better example within the borders of the state and its moral tone has ever been the object of watchful regard by its citizens All the leading fraternal organizations are well represented in Lancaster and through them social and friendly relations are kept thoroughly alive To day Lancaster has a population of 2000 souls The business part of the town is built up with brick business blocks and no town in the state can boast of more enterprising and progressive business and professional men all of whom are alive to the interests of the place and walk hand in hand to promote its welfare and growth which in a great measure is the secret of its prosperity Truly metropolitan facilities have been acquired in a splendid electric light system a telephone system a fine hotel and opera house machine shops and flour mills with many others contemplated A description of the new water works system the contract for which is soon to be awarded by the City will be found in another column of this issue If the growth of Lancaster and promoters of the railway from Hickman are obtaining deeds from property holders along the line This is alright but THE RECORD respectfully suggests to said property holders that they in sert in the transferers a clause stat ing If the Southern or any other Railroad is built through said land said electric railway companj is to give a free right of way over lands so deeded or words to this effect Remember this now and look into it As we have always contended the Southern is going to be built and its well enough to avoid pos sible complications 1SUYANTSYILLE J B Leavel and a number 01 others
