old his next birthday Girl Walter Mr T B Long proprietor of the flew Garrard Hotel has placed colored girls as diningroom waiters in place of boys He contends that while boys can possibly get around quicker yet they can not keep the room and tables as neat and tidy as girls and beside the girls are always on hand and take more pride in the work The plan is proving successful Club Room A number of young men are fitting up elegant club rooms in the Stormes block on Danville street It is private institution and will much pleasure to the promoters By their rules only members are to be admitted so the hoodlum element will be completely shut out If they will enforce strictly their rules and regulations the club will be a good thing Good Description Charley Howard the clever editor of the Hodgenville Herald says The weather of the past week could very properly be called spotted assorted variegated One day the sun comes out and smiles one of its warmest sweetest smiles and all nature is jhap py and sings Annie Laurie The next day the rain comes and the sleet comes and Nature gets mad and fires off a charliewheeler at anybody and everybody that comes in striking dis tance Then again the Stanford Journal says While at Lancaster some ten days ago we had the pleasure of again meeting our old friend the veteran printer Frank J White in the office where Louis Lan dram claims to be boss The captain had lately recovered from a severe spell of sickness and was as proud to be able to get up to the office and be with the boys as a youngster would be when presented with a pony saddle and bridle Long may his good continue Lecture at Christian Church Miss Adelaide Frost late of India will make an address April 1st at the Christian church The C W B M Auxilary was instrumental in Miss Frost to Lancaster and it invites the public to bear her The opportunity is a rare one as it is one so cultured and experienced can give so much time to a small town It will be interesting to our people to know that she received her early training in Prof Zollars school at Hiram Ohio Let all those in bringing about the highest and best of humanity attend this There will be no admission citizen Only a day or so before he was on the streets mingling with friends in as apparent good health as he had been for several years Mr Gill was never a very healthy man and for the last few years he has been complain mg more or less all the He tired Friday night saying that he not feel as well as usual but toward morning grew worse He continued to grow weaker and death came about eight oclock A severe cold had the heart trouble with which he had suffered for several years As stated above the news of his death was a great shock as no man had more friends than did he Mr Gill was born in the present home place and resided there all his life He has been prominent in farming and fine horse interests and no man was more widely known or had more friends than he When a young man Mr Gill was left a vast fortune but instead of hoard ing it away and living the life of a miser he called in his friends to enjoy what he had and never did anyone no matter how humble apply to him for assistance that his pursestrings were not loosened and the want sup plied Warmhearted and kind he made a friend of all with whom in contact and if he ever refused a favor it was because it was not within his power to grant it Malcolm H Gill would have been seventy years old the 10th day of next October He was a son of John Gill and one of a large family of children three only himself John S Gill and Mrs home enterprises that should not be lost sight of There are several institutions here in Lancaster which were not mentioned in our special in which thousands of dollars are invested and on which home peo people as a rule are very loyal to such institutions but there is a in all country towns to lean toward the stranger to toady to every carpetbagger who comes along in preference to standing up for and helping the home man improve what he has One case in mind is that of the local telephone company This is a concern which was built up and put on a firm footing by home men started it Who bore the burden heat of the day in getting the interested and building system by which subscribers can talk to the most remote parts of the country Well why should not these promoters now reap the reward of their labor if they furnish what you want at prices When you have an institution which is proving to all concerned why by bringing in opposition when the profit of one will barely make a liv ing for the promoter The trouble is that when some enterprise is put on foot and the promoters begin to make a few cents out of it there is a rush to establish opposition which results in the collapse of both and then the people are left with nothing Let good enough alone Dont try to freeze out institutions which have been nourished to by the efforts of some home man whose sole object was to improve the town Every cent taken in by the home telephone company the electric light plant the mills the Central Record office and various other is turned right back into the pockets of Lancaster people so why take your dollars and throw them to outsiders who dont care a Lancaster only for what they can over it and conclude to stand up for the people on whom they are themselves the sooner our town nourish Independent Local Newspaper ISSOKD WEEKLY LOUIS Editor and Publisher Lancaster Ky March ijth 1902 THE name of the Harrodsburg has been changed to Herald Messrs Hutton Pulliam are getting out a rattling good paper and richly merit a good support AN unfortunate young lady at City Mo in trying to prevent a young man from kissing her gave her neck a sudden twist breaking it If sne had broken her neck tryingto get kissed she would have died in a noble cause but to lose her life in an to prevent a good sound smack Is distressing indeed THERE is no trouble with either the new or old system of voting in this State says the Boone county Record The trouble lies in the political of many of the men who are appointed to conduct elections When the State is able to have nothing hones men to receive count and tify the votes as cast there will no longer be trouble with any old system as no law can head off all the rascals Gov TAFT does not regard the Fil ipinos as fit for jury service The law here in Kentucky permits almost as ignorant a class of things to serve If a man has read an account of a case or has formed or expressed an opinion he is told to stand one is selected that has no stop work COL W P WALTON finding that his daftly the Lexington Democrat required all his time sold the Har rodsburg Democrat to Charley Lewis the Shelby Sentinel While the Harrodsburg people lose a wheel hoss in Col Walton they will find Bro Lewis a hand and a half at helm and the Democrat will be kept the top notch Mr Lewis has concluded to return to the plan of issuing a weekly paper thus giving all the local news instead of sending his readers a carload of boilerplate matter and a scattering of the of the worldatlarge twice a week Gov BECKIIAM continues to prove that he is not the Boy Governor but a man of sterling integrity and plenty of hoss sense One of his recent determinations is that he will listen nothing about pardons except from persons who have knowledge of the facts in the cases where clemency is asked or who are otherwise qualified to give genuine of value THE RECORD would respectfully suggest to its valued friend the Governor that he serve interested as in this way the names of many men who know criminals the verdicts of juries and judgments of courts be better protected IT is reported that several of the larger railroad companies have issued orders to employes to allow no passen ger to remove his shoes io the coach es This is a mighty good idea and we hope all roads will see that this abominable nuisance is stopped On nearly every train some hog will come in yank off his brogans and stick filthy feet on the back of the seat front It matters not how many la dies there are in the coach these hogs will keep the loudsmelling clod mash ors stuck up in full view and often times protruding across the aisle Such cattle should be put in the baggage car or if a stock car could be hauled for them it would be much better One may talk of Kentucky chivalry but the men in this state do more rude acts like this than in any state we have ever traveled through COL W P WALTON through his Lexington Democrat thus pays his respects to the most contemptible set of scoundrels on top of earth All of the newspapers seem to be taking a fall out of that disreputable creature the shyster He is one of the curses and there is communi ty in the world andis better than any map sold for a dollar The Herald is always something to make itself of to its subscribers NOT IN OIL COMPANY I Nor Has Governor Bradley Been Chal lenged For a Duel The reports that Governor Bradley had been challenged to fight a duel and that he was President of the Eas tern Kentucky Oil and Gas Company were denied by him in the following what about the report that John Canter has challenged you to tight a duel There is not one word of truth in it Canter is one of the most and unique characters I have ever known filled with kindly emotions and the last man in the world to pick quarrel That is merely newspaper chat I notice Governor that you are Vice President and Director of the Southeastern Kentucky Oil and Gas Company That is another mistake I am not a stockholder in the company or connected with it in any way I with its projector some time since concerning the places in the State where I thought oil could be most probably found I never knew until I received from a friend a day or so ago a Prospectus that I had been elected as you state On inquiry I found it was merely a compliment I declined to accept either of the positions on account of other en gagements Deserving Words The Courier Journal has the to say of our townsman Senator GeorgcT Farris of Gar rard county is receiving scores of from all parts of the State and congratulating him on the enactment into a law of his AntiBlind Tiger Bill which is re garded as one of the greatest impor tance by all temperance people Sen atorFarris is a good fighter and when he enlists his interest in a cause it can be depended upon that he will not waver it matters not how strong the opposing forces An interesting evidence of Senator Farris determination of character is bit of yellow paper which he has carried in his pocket since 1871 or for thirtyone years When a young man Senator Farris was one of the best patrons that a saloonkeeper ever had and he is not now ashamed to admit it And when crossed while out with the boys he always proved to be a game fighter as a result of which it would be hard to put a on his body and not touch a scar Seven men emptied seven pistols at him one night and put twentyseven holes in his clothes and three in his body In 1871 Senator Farris signed the Murphy pledge and from that day until this he has not tasted a drop of any intoxicating liquor In all his acts he shows the courage of his convictions and whenever Geo T Farris takes a position on any sub ject before the General Assembly everybody knows it is because he it is right A Profitable Crop When a young Kentucky farmer can sell a crop of tobacco raised on eight acres of land for 161313 net after paying all expenses of sale and it looks like there might be something more than a living on a Kentucky farm yet This was done on the local market Thursday says the CourierJournal one particular sample selling at twentyfive ana one half cents a pound and the whole crop averaging twelve and onehalf cents Of course it is not every farmer that can do as well but there are hundreds of thousands of acres in Kentucky on which a tobacco crop can be grown of common quality but which will yet net the grower twice the market value of the ground No crop will repay careful treatment in cultivation and marketing better than tobacco even at the low prices now prevailing It is a natural monopoly of this State and by figures of the 1890 census produced 55 per cent of all the leap grown in the United States Tobacco is an article of consumption and is as Wroth of a staple as iron or steel for the whole world is a buyer Under these circumstances it is idle to preach that a monopoly will force the price down below the cost of If farmers will bestow some of the care on their tobacco crops that all market gardeners do on their the rewards would be in Care and intelligence will always pay with a crop which can only be grown in a limited territory and nowhere outside of Kentucky a good article of Western tobacco be grown in such perfection though other varieties are produced wit greater success elsewhere to record the tact that new factories are springing up here in this city and elsewhere though the trade has been so much centralized by consolidation There will always be a great leaf market here and there will always be competition for the Contentment is always perched on the preparatory to squeezing them to the limit of their endurance Kentucky produces about twothirds of the grown in this country and if her producers will work together and themselves they will put an end to this monopoly that fixes the price both of the raw material and the man ufactured product without regard to the cost of production Surely there is a remedy at the hands of our far mers if they will get together and meet this trust with such an organi zation as will prevent them from curing enough of the raw tobacco to be able to dictate the terms The move now on foot is one that should by all means be kept going until the needed relief is tinelAny man who knows how and will apply his brain and muscle can make a vastly better living off a ten acre farm situated near some good town than he below a rating invariably decided after an interview that indifference would hardly be conducive to court favor for them He looked back with pride upon a long name and if his mothers nose was elevated to a more etherealized scent there was every reason it should be Pendleton had married one of the choicest belles of the inner circles of the inmost Beautiful graceful tactful she was emi nently after all I thought was a sort of game a person to learn You bold you what you little masher The words were not which little Doooo had ever heard before but the tone struck his sensitive ear as correct and so he squirmed himself in his new arms cried and pointed toward the bow of the ship to his desire for movement Part of the influence which the baby directed his beautiful new friend was exerted through his mother a young widow with eyes like as dark as an an intense little woman who was as quick and vigorous in action as she was with Noting her babys admiration for Miss and bent herself to be agreeable to her It to follow that from treating her formal politeness she came to her to any other woman on the shipOn one day Doooos mother Mrs Knight name had been sitting in silence beside Miss Bucknam for an hour she turned and said My dear you mind coming down to my cabin with me I want to siy something that cant well be said up When they were both together and the cabin was closed Mrs startled the younger woman by remarking that she had an extreme to her and that she wondered whether it was not possible for them to live together I have few relatives in England and with those I have never got along well 1 have no friends there for whom I care much I manage the two plantations in Ceylon my husband left and I spend there very nice English people close to where I If I was more and talkative I could entertain a great deal That is a could do very well while I looked on I to have dinners and know how to carry them off You say father has met with reverses in his business In HongKong and is too broken to mend fortunes You are going to study painting in London be a nurse Miss Buck interposedOr thats the truth dear one means starving and the other drudging Well why not cast your lot me Go me in cold weather accept nice allowance and share whatever got as well Will you Kiss me and let that be yes Miss Bucknams thoughts ran madly to and fro across her brain She saw widows cheek held down and towards her for a kiss and in the flurry of her thoughts she reached up mechanically and kissed her No nol I did not mean to kiss she cried out I take that back Mrs Knight Its too sudden this awfully kind idea yours Let me think It over till till Gibraltar Quite right said Mrs Knight You are a sense I could not expect you to have been thinking of a as I have I do things suddenly Im sudden myself Till then now lets go on and not speak another word all dayAt Port Said a few of the winter dawdlers in came aboard Among them were some commonplace elderly passengers and two very young persons were a young man a who were the possession of misplaced wealth The young man in of took the form of su perabundant affection Both were wasting treasure and killing themselves at the game He had been flinging his money away both hands at Cairo where met the miss and made a violent but wholly insincere assault her heart wore stays blacked his eyelashes and the edges with champagne at breakfast and talked about money as if he had enough to breathe in if he chose to The was the companion of her invalid mother who spent most time in bed while the daughter drifted where she would She could not have been a day eighteen and the impression of countrybred and from first on board at the side of mother but her eyes were riveted upon Harold the fresco of a man his frame of solid He was still attentive to her and when the moved away from Port Said and her mother had gone to her cabin they sat together in the lovelyfaceI j areyou Indicate frequentlytookhap- pened 1 Ceylon forthough alongfor a itoh beyond her I I upright oo Suddenly night stern of the the smoking room and out of of everyone of everyone except firm of Co for those now hung about whisperedThey painsIn was hurrying along the deck to get a rug and a the he had fascinated when he saw Miss standing by the ships rail amidships glanced at him a way she had not I think even once before during the voyage in a peculiar way a way you could not even mention a court of law under the rules governing evidence and it was a easily produce the most important episode in The difference it and the ordinary glance of a woman was as as yet it was so a difference as to be Indescribable Indeed she might have been barely conscious of her own act until she saw its effect him for he stopped in of his hurry and lounged up to the rail beside her five minutes he had told her something of his great wealth and she was encouraging his mood with close atten tion and a familiar and free line of comment and byplay of words of which she proved an easy mistress later little semimotherless maiden who had sent him for her book and rug was posted thirty yards further along the deck beside the same looking now into the sea and now at the merry couple carried radiant and glorious only a short time before Were the cinematographed all the way to Gibraltar same scene be repeated uninterruptedly to the end There but only of a minor sort Often Harold Baddington and Miss Bucknam sat in their close together and only the backs of their heads visible at far end of the little deck Then the languishing country maid sat at the near end with closed on her stealing glances in their direction Often also the picturesque pair stood in the stern or at rail at quoits together or sat side side where the people were thickest on the main deck He was talking in a low tone she was as constantly laughing a trifle loudly And always the Death s head at a Ro man or a grim cartoon by Dore at the end of a the miss lurked near misery personified daily growing more to waken pity a bronze Miss Bucknam still pursued her share of the sports competitions part in the concerts in kept her position as one ot the charter so to of the clublike company Something different however have been in her manner toward the invalid missionary She invited less good counseling of her self a faint little bit more unworthily Her visits too were fewer shorter Youve only to follow your best im pulses the invalid said one when she was at her favorite pastime of planning the other acquaintances on deck take music or painting for which are keep in touch with these new friends anything goes amiss or you need come to me wont you dear at address I have given you our mis sionary headquarters I will see to it that you get money to come to me wherever may be said Miss Bucknam with some thing too suggestive of a softened snarl dont Those women on deck are like Freemasons Some day they will ask me for their pedigree I theyll get itll all have for nothing I tell its no use After we leave this ship it will be best that you dont think any more about even made an effort to change her relation toward Mrs Knight day after a long tftrattte with she looked all over the deck for that lady When she found her she told her that she really did not think it was right fo her to accept her offer of a home She was going on a Hood of argument for the delivery of which she had evidently prepared but Mrs Knight werent to sivaU of that till we got to she said I will not believe you could disappoint even then but until we get to it over earnestly and dont let us talk And now the was nearing Gibraltar The rock rose ahead in a shape that is never shown in pictures a fleet of black warships it thatand scarcelybe hurricane e
