W lodges of that city Dont miss it Admission 2uc 2t Many Errors Every week we have to read twelve galleys or columns of proof This is done while four or live people are asking questions the telephone is ringing several duns are being and heaven only knows going on As a general thing we can talk to twenty people on as many different subjects and read and write at the same time but occasionally an error creeps in Last week we missed an entire and it went errors bad spelling and into the forms If you cant make allowances for this come up some day and try your hand at getting out an issue Lancaster has a number or exceedingly brilliant minds which could steer the New York World and we will cheerfully give a weeks prof its of this office yes a monthsif some of these loafing wiseacres will run the shebang for one issue Bunco teen It gives us a pain under the apron to hear men raising a howl when they lose money in a skin game The usu al con men were following the recently in this vicinity and a number of people lost a wad in the game Men go into the scheme to win the show mans money and if he does win anything you cin rest assured nothing is said about it but if the show man wins then officers are called in to get it back Its simply this both are gars bling each satisfied he is going to win The hayseed goes against the other fellows game and as a matter of course loses Both are gambling So why should a court haul up the bunk man and let the other gambler is go This is absolutely disgusting If one is fined why not fine both Mr Bunco should go before the county judge and say he had lost a lot of money to Mr Hayseed and wanted it back Wouldnt this be as fair as for Mr Hayseed to be given the of the courts When they lose let them stand it and if knowledge of the game comes to the court stick a fine on both parties It takes two to gamble Assessment Rallied The State Board of Equalization threw the hooks into Garrard county last week by raising the valuation of real state five per cent over the amount named by the assessor and supervisors As this is an unjust move committee composed of Mess A R Denny Thos Austin and R II Tomlinson will go to Frankfort today and lay the matter before the board in its true state While Garrard has some of the finest land in Kentucky yet there is much of it that is almost worthless Dix river circles around it for more than half wayand Kentucky river borders on a great portion Of course the land adjoining the waters is hilly and mostly cliffs that produce nothing whatever On another side we border ante the bald hills and some of this land is too poor to The rate of taxation in Gar rard is already a little stiff and if any change is to be made it should be in the way of reduction Our county has been assessed by men thoroughly to fix the valuations and decision should be left undisturbed THE RECORD is satisfied the commit tee will succeed In showing the high muckamucks that theyre off their base ip raising our beef has put that necessary article of food out of reach of many people and only the rich can now enjoy it In many places people enter into an agreement to buy no meat and butch ers in some towns have been forced to close their doors Choice beef in the city is now selling at from 15 to 25 cents per pound and while it is a sat isfaction for the farther to receive a high price for his cattle it is corres pondingly a hardship on the consumer the meat and thus what pleases displeases another Richardson of Tennessee has a bill in Congress demanding investigation of an alleged beef trust which he thinks has something do with the high price of meat At torney General Knox has also taken steps to begin criminal proceedings against the alleged trust whose are said to be in Chicago Hell Soon be Here One of the funniest sights to us are young sapsuckers who have gone to the city and after a short time re turn to the country home on a to the old man and the old as they slightingly speak of and mother It is remarkable how small the old home town grows how the moss has accumulated on the backs of bjnhood acquaintances These little roosters go to the city and earn salary of probably two dollars a week and their washing but when they come out home in the brush they a spludge that is amusing amusing to the country ac qutintances The lads have forgot ten how they used to cross the old Interested The special grand jury in Fayette county adjourned after returning thirtysix indictments against persons connected with investment companies The indictments embrace about fifty people some of them being indicted jointly and others separately Most the indictments charge Judge Parker quashed the returned against the South Mutual Investment company charging it conducted lottery There been no charge that the Southern Mutual is doing an illegal business It in fact the only the kind the state that has complied with law in reference to their regula tion The Lexington Herald says the jury is said to have found a large number of indictments the more also the pity unless they are upon grounds that can not be controverted There men who went into the investment company business to steal and they did rob those who trusted them with their hard earnings These should be sent to the penitentiary along with those who after getting into the business saw how easy it was steal and did so Against such there should be no let up till they are made to don striped suits but as we have said before we very much fear that the wholesale indictment of company men may defeat the ends of justice by confusing the innocent with the guilty Commencement Exercise The commencement exercises of the Graded School will be held in the Gar rard Opera House next Thursday morning May 22 at 1015 oclock THE The shock of the explosion shattered window panes right and so much water was splashed out that fishermen below that point thought for a while that the stream was going dry Since a time when the memory of man runneth not to the contrary this mighty bowlder weighing thousands of tons had lain undisturbed on the brink of the two hundred feet above the bed of the stream It was probably thrown there from the outcropping above by some seismic convulsion of nature the remote past In that position seemed as though a touch of the hand would have caused it to plunge into the gorge but hitherto it had defied successfully every effort of man to overthrow it The rock is historic Itwas on that stone that Daniel Boone wielding his big hunting knife often flayed and quartered venisorfand bear And in the spring time when the buds began to burst and the woods turn green it is said that the old would sometimes sit there for hours at a time listening to the strange voices of the forest and expectorating a mouthful of tobacco juice into the rippling water beneath his feet What an interest attaches to that remote and shadowey past And with what emotions of sadness and pain must every person of lofty sentiment view one after another of his toric objects under the ruthless as saults of vandalism Want Beckliam to Run A Frankfort press dispatch says Representative Embry Allen Allison
