no deeper than 150 to 175 feet ana if no water is found another hole will be put down It is said by those who ought to know that if water is not found within this depth theres no use going deeper The Council will continue the search until water is found An option has been taken from property holders on enough land to build a large reservoir and as the location is nicely adapted for the a large lake can be built at small cost Nearly every one believes water will be found here and enough wells will be put down to get a sufficient supply In the meantime the legal question as to going to the river men tinned last week is being thoroughly investigated and an opinion from the court of appeals is expected most any day The Council is doing exactly what ninetenths of the taxpayers want what the people living in town want and for which they expect to pay There are not many talking against the proposition but as this has been settled itdont make spy dif ference The town mast have water before any hustlers will locate here What we must do is to Induce more men of who will hustle for the town to locate here Unless this is done the outlook is not as rosy as it might be We want no more of the editor of The Record was neverhonored with a more pleasant or highly appreciated call than that made us Friday by Mr J S Armstrong of Dallas Texas Mr Armstrong is the soninlaw of Capt Franklin J White of this ollice and is well known by older citizens of Lan caster when he used to travel through here for his wholesale grocery house in Louisville It was while making these trips that he met with Miss Alice T White one of the handsom est and most lovable young ladies Gar rard county has ever produced after their marriage they located in Dallas where they have since resided Their eldest daughter Mrs Minnie May Flippen accompanied them on their recent visit to the old home She is indeed a beautiful girl possessed of all the characteristics which make the noble lovely woman and her beauty was complimented on every hand last week They have one other child Miss Johnetta who is as attractive as and the two are leading factors in Dallas society Upon locating in Dallas Mr Arm strong established what is now the packinghouse in Texas The business was begun in 1890 and its growth has been remarkable indeed At the outset its founder intended to conduct a beef and porkpacking busi ness exclusively but other have been added from time to time until the establishment stands at the head of Texas enterprises Mr Armstrong is one of the wealthiest men in Texas but this has never brought on that disposition or closelisted ness which too often encompasses a man when he gets a good showing on his side of the ledger On the other hand he is constantly on the lookout for an opportunity to help some deserving struggling fellowman and if he learns of such a case his purse strings are immediately loosened and he does all he can to assist those in need of lIe is a man who has no use for the thriftless nor will he employ who is not what is known in slang phrases as a hustler Mr Arm strongs devotion to his family is indeed Their happiness and come before everything else lie is especially interested in young men and as stated above will do all in his who I goingto For sale sow and seven o pigs J C Hem ill 515tf I Shortly Flippen departments hardheartedness- cold anyone comfort has rom gatulate him d chi tea Mrs pioneer succor lovely power to help any youug fellow who is trying to get a foothold in the world Men of these noble characteristics are so scarce that The Record cannot from singing their praises f In speaking of his Dallas enterprise Mr Armstrong said We are large ly engaged in the refining of cotton seed oil and the manufacture of lard laundry and toilet soap washing and chipped soap In addition to this we our ice a large part of the year in mak ing ice We ire using considerable of our cold storage space for storing ice to be delivered during the summer This change has been brought about in the last few years on account of the scarcity of hogs As to the supply in Texas I will state that the first year we did business we secured in this state by hard effort 6000 head The balance we slaughtered were brought from outside States After the first few years we were in business we had all the hogs we could handle even with our very much increased facili ties Up to within the last two years we had sufficient to run full time but on account of two failures of the corn crop in Texas hogs at present are very scarce and of very poor quality There no chance for any packer to kill at a profit the character of hogs now offered or even to get out whole on the transaction Nevertheless we buy everything that is offered in this line as we must have a certain propor tion of some kind of hogs for fresh meat but the animals are not in a condition which will justify a packer in curing time meat They are not corn fed and show a very large shrinkage sufficient to wipe out margin there might be in ordinary hog at present prices But Ij have abundant faith In Tes refrain compound po xder machine is being an run any i J e a as supplying sufficient hogs to the packinghouses that are now in the State and any others that may come to the State in the near future In my opinion Texas is one of the beat States in the and the only involved in raising swine is that of procuring sufficient corn to finish the animals In this Common wealth hogs are and should be raised largely on green stuff such as rye al falfa or green pasturage A hog can b3 raised to weigh 125 to 150 pounds with practically very little expense- S It takes about seven bushels of corn to finish the animal off so that it will suit the packer Any one familiar with can readily under stand hov cheaply and how rapidly hogs can be raised there under the conditions named But it does not matter how much you feed a hog on green stuff or anything other than corn you cannot make him a porker without giving him the finishing touches with corn Like all other Kentuckians Mr thinks his native State tbegar den spot of the world and said Well I love the old State and there are some of the best people in the world right here I am good for a few more years of active work yetbut when age does creep upon me and I find I must sit down to await the final summons I am coming straight back to Ken tucky to spend the remaining days The Vote In Garrard Following is the officials count of votet in Garrard in Garrard at the last week Beckham 528 Thorne 391 the most widely disseminated of all the industries and is almost universal But the price for eggs and fowls indicate that the demand is not fully met that more of these products should be grown and of supply and demand A farmer should now be careful about breeding the saddle mares He should select a which will be too near akin or too violent an out cross and be sure that he is registered in the
