country are still displaying extreme caution buying thin cattle Whatever they may do paving high prices is not part of their policy this season Many of them admit their intention to feed but as as values have been seeking a lower level right aiong contend logically that they have madetaoney while waiting Kansas and Nebraska are the Only States that have been heavy buyers of thin cattle so tar The deficiency in this movement to feed lots has been the cause of considerable speculation Oue Chicago live stock concern has flooded the country with inquiry by mail and concludes from the responses elicited that the number of cattle now on feed is but 70 per cent of that at the corresponding time in 1903 This concern has also made the that there is a tendency among feeders to buv cattle late and begin feeding early in January for late Spring and summer markets If true this suggests that the winter market will be lightly supplied while the ex cess will show up after May These estimates are after all mere conjec tures but there can be no doubt that the number of cattle now on feed is considerably less than at this time a year ago Bargains In Property We can give bargains and easy terms a coast town said the old codger to a New Orleans TimesDemocrat writer and he was without doubt one of the most unique and startlingly original men who ever wore the ermine The judge held court at a popular resort on the coast now one of the most thriving and prosper ous communities in the lower section of Mississippi At the time I have in mind however the area of the town was not much larger than an ordinary building lot But the judge was a big man just the same felt his importance as a functionary in one of the great branches of the government and wielded the gavel with a grace and dignity worthy of the ermine in its palmiest days There was an Irishman in the com munity who was in the habit of drunk every time he was paid off He was always arrested locked up and tried by the judge The judge was his friend The feeling was mutual What law the judge did not know from Mikes of looking at it had not yet been written Mike was thrown into the calaboose one night He was arrested by his friend the judge The judge had special authority to make arrests because of the scarcity of men in that section at the time The next morning the judge went down to the calaboose after the prisoner and him up to the courtroom a small room about the size of a box car with one little table in it a chair and the judges perch The judge crawled up on his perch Mr Bailiff open said the judge solemnly Oh yez Oh yez this honorable court is now open to adjournment said the judge who was also the court crier Michael OGrady drunk disorderly disturbing the peace resisting an officer using profane language and assault with in tent to batter said the judge Bring the prisoner around Mr Bailiff Mike shambled around to where he could face the judge Guilty or not asked the Judge Not guilty yer honor said Mike Discharged said the judge That completed the and court was adjourned in the usual formal way Mike and the judge who were the only members in the court room walked out arm in arm 01 have the price uv a drink said Mike Well 3 it said the judge and so they Old NO TERRORS IN 13 FOR HIM Soldier Who Had Been Up the Whole Scoffed at Thirteen army recruits filed into tho United States went back to his job James E Power an old regular army veteran listened to the rookies expostulations with loud hahas Oh fudge he exclaimed Why Its part of a fellows nerve to buck the hoodoo I was day The increasing prevalence of the course and the practice of using several va rieties of china for its service is responsible the change A who some years ago purchased a handsome dinner set now feels that If she used it alone she would make a poor showing before her guests reports the Washington Star Different plates are used for different courses The service plates are of par ticularly fine china The plates for the meat course are of a simpler and more substantial design than those for the dessert and the afterdinner coffee is served in cups as delicate as can be found In the larger establishments dinner is served from the butlers pan try Many of the dishes used in a sim pler menage where the roast and its accompaniments are placed on the are not required in the former case The needs of the different housekeepers are as varied as the houses in which they liveIt is no more expensive to have different china than to have all the pieces alike Open sets have made this possible Within the last five years these have increased in size and number Now there is practically no style of china that cannot be bought in open stock A set of china which the merchant keeps on hand and from which his cur tcmer makes her selections is much complete than the one he would have formerly sold her entire He is pre pared to suit all tastes and meet all needs He has teapots in all sizes pots equally varied and sugar bowls and creameries to match A with a large small or medium family finds exactly the set size she requires If ltr family increases she is able to Increase her number of pieces and to obtain the larger sizes It is also possible to replace any piece of china The housekeeper is not as in the old days heartbroken over the loss of a dish It can easily be duplicated There are open sets not only in the fine china but n the pottery In this less expensive ware are delightful re productions of oldtime dark blue with quaint little low teapots sugar bowls and creamers The pottery in lighter colors in pinks and in pinks and greens combined has something of the art nouveau designs They are pleasing even if they have not quite the charm ol the reproductions HOW TO TREAT CHILBLAINS When Taken la the Early Stage They Hay Be Easily Arrested and Cured A chilblain is a disorder of the deeper skin and is due to alterations In the local blood circulation The simplest form of chilblain is nothing more than a congestion of the capillai rles the circulation being congested by blocking in one or two of these vea sels The degree of severity is in to the number of the vessels involved says American Queen The sensation is an irritative itcb ing Often a blister is formed as a result of friction but so far there J3 no inflammation The white cells of the blood migrate from the vessels as water drops from a porous pipe The highest degree of severity is suppura tive inflammation or the formation of pus Rupture of a chilblain Is not dangerous but the greatest care should be exerted to prevent a bad sore which is likely to follow a ruptured skin Chilblains are not peculiar to the feet alone They may appear on any part of the body They are seldom seen on parts of the body where the circulation is good They usually ap pear on the ears hands feet and nose As has been said before the cause of chilblains is due to bad circulation other causes are deficient exercise or insufficiently warm clothing In a mild state the trouble may be arrested by friction with cold or snow which frees the congested vessels On the contrary an early stage of chilblain can be successfully treated by gradual heating the afflicted part in cold water and allow the temperature to rise slowly either by adding boiling water or by a lamp below the tub until 4 high degree is reached that is until the water is as hot as can be borne Avoid a sudden lowering of the body as soon as the part is removed from the water When a chilblain Is of long a very good treatment is as Capsicum or camphor for the circulation a soothing plication as menthol cocaine op opium contraction of dilated vessels by belladonna Some authorities prescribe a decoction of walnut leaves for application in the early stages Walnut leaves made into a paste with hot water are used with success for ulcerated chilblains lodoform nap thol and vaseline in equal parts make an ointment that is considered for chronic forms of the dsorder Chicken Cut the chicken into nine pieces ando boil about hajf tender then add fix mediumsized sweet potatoes peeled and cut in halves When done place tbe pieces of chicken and the potatoes alter nately In a shallow baking dish lire J with a biscuit crust Season with pep per and salt bits of butter and the broth from the chicken and Cover with crust Modish In Fars The little coat collars that for severalI seasons have been absent from jackets are coming back again and are often of velvet A fancy edge of some sort adds to these pn of the bolero the collar is npt than an inch and a half deep and disappears in in others it is deeper and turns into fevers in front says a fashion Reverdble fronts have apparently quite gone out although one Have Last week It was Ring out the Old now it is Ring In the New In a sense we put the old behind with deeper significance says Christian Work we confront the new For most 6f us tht Bible holds certain texts which are pi votal texts around which many mean ings strengthenings pithy and fruitful are clustered One of these is the Pauline injunction Forgetting the things which are behind we press forward In some relations of course we are not in need of the reminder to forget the things which are behind We are very eager to let the old year go though It has in the main been a friend to us coming to our doors full handed and leaving good gifts but kind as it has been we are all from the grayhaired man to the toddling child charmed to offer the New Years greeting to friend and kinsman The old year was marred by mistakes was brimmed with mercies was profaned by sins was hallowed by pardon was full of struggle was sweet with peace a year of work a year of rest a year of opportunity a year of grace It had the same sharp contrasts the same glad surprises the same check ered course which every one of our years has had We ought to be at least in a little regretful as its last sands run out but we are the reverse Every throb of our hearts is hopeful hopeful that the New Year will bring us good fortune greater success a wider hori zon a firmer standingground- And if we are so fortunate as to be able to begin the year with no hamper Ing debts no morbid griefs and no memories we are right in facing life cheerily In setting our eyes bravely the mark In pressing onward Right we are whatever the situation n meeting it cheerily Of all things de pressing disheartening the burden of disheartening and chilling memory is the most onerous The discouraged per son has no stresgth tp look forward Melancholy not only arrests progress it really palsies the fpot that would go Among the most unproductive mental exercises are those which spend energy Imperatively needed for present action in vain breedings and futile for mistakes of the past Even for sin wilful and heinous the Lord not exact at our hands a neverceasing course of sackcloth asd ashes He us repent and be done with It repent and begin again While we are the coward Ice of yesterday we might if we would be up and doing retrieve the lost field and drive the anemy from his position While we mourn over we might have dyne another less disposed to the weakness pf selfre proach steps into our vacant place and performs some deed of valor inaugu rates some worthy enterprise Vse the power to seize on whatever tool lies next to you avail yourself of whatever resources are presented first and fruitless regrets go on toward The busy have no time If the New Year hope is to blossom into New Year results of joy and we must see to it that we keep OUT resplution to ourselves as faithfully as we are expected to keep our promises tc others We must see to it that a spirit of kindness is behind our purposes and impulses To lay an ungentle touch an aching wound is always most ungracious So deep and sincere is our sympathy the thousands who can ineet the New Year with composure because pf the Iqngjng for the vanished hand and their yearning for the sound Of the voice that is still that we to remind them that there is forgetting our grief riot Jn our dead in a sense profoundly sweet and helpful they with us when they are out of sight If they and we are Christs But to indulge in a luxury of woe to the manifest detriment of interests which require our utmost strength and attention to so lament the dead that we are neglect of the driving them from us by our and indifference If more than fouJsh it is wicked and un apd unwprthy of a man or woman While the New Year cannot return what the old year took away It can and does accentuate fact that we are nearer The bound of lire Where we lay our burdens down It reminds us that soon we shall have passed where beyond these voices there is peace Shall we not look to reunion rather than sigh bit terly over lost pleasures and ovet Interrupted communion goRingAw VnproBtable Job As unprofitable a thing as we can well do is tomake people over in our thoughts Why doesnt she doesnt she do that can he reel as he does Why will he do so Thus our poor brains run on and on waistlng pre cious energy dissipating nerve force clouding worthy resolves and endeavors And the result is only to make ourselves miserable Would it be an advantage to you or to me to have our friends or ac quaintances consider us or our doings in tills Then should we as kssly our mental and
