crops to raise Again take the who sticks to the dairy year after year This man not only almost in has a rich and productive but he is out of debt and money in the bank True he runs dairy at times when to say that preparations are under way a cele bratiou of that festival It is a day that should be observed The holiday that commemorates the event which marks the beginning of Christendom should be a time for rejoicing for all humanity and should be made gay and beautiful Nothing in reason make the occasion a happy be omitted The tendency In recent years bow ever is so to overdo some of the forms of Christmas observance as to make the season a burden and Its approach nightmare The custom of gift is within proper limitations a beautiful one but It has grown to such proportions as to have lost its true spirit as an expression of good Reeling People have come to feel it necessary to make gifts as for ether gifts or because they fancy such offering is expected of them The consequence is that and spontanelety are destroyed and what should be a pleasure too often a perfunctory and rksome undertaking People send rifts that carry no real sentiment with hem to friends who do not want them Furthermore they spend more A me and money on them than they an afford and are exhausted in body and mind and purse when the day is verIt is a fashion of the time that should be changed Common sense should restore the giftgiving custom x its proper place There should be 16 sense of obligation about the on the part of giver or receiver If i spirit of friendliness prompts the the sending of a remembrance let it be sent but unless the relations are very close a mere rememhrancea trifle that will carry the thought and greet ing is sufficient It puts the recepi ent under no obligation and shows the good will of the sender Even a note of greeting is sufficient and may be more welcome than a hastily selected object of intrinsic value that really expresses no sentiment Women have it in their power to do away with this abuse of what should be the most wel festival of the year and should undertake tne reform The willingness of the New York electrician convicted of murder to uffer vegetable situation Notwithstanding the fact t hat is but a week off and the thermometer down to a wintry point the markets are displaying the tender vegetables The supply Is not so plenti nowas in the summer season but get allmost any kind of garner delicacy Displayed behind the show windows may be seen tender radishes onions English peas beets asparagus etc and if they were not behind perspiring glass with a biting temperature the outside one might imagine himself in the middle of June The prices as well as the tender vege tables remind one of tha first crop in the early spring Two months ago a bunch of radishes could be bought for a nlckle now a like bunch would cost fifteen cens Prices are up on other tender kinds in proportation They are second crop explained a dealer and cost us than the first spring supply They were raised this fall under difficulties too he The gardeners not only had to cultivate them carefully but were forced by the drouth to water them daily The temperature was kind enough to them but no rain fell while these vegetables were growing Not only Is there a fair second crop of the delicate kinds of garden truck but many of the gardeneis are now marketing a second crop of Irish potatoes They are no different from these potatoes the dealer lebels new potatoes in the spring and charges a stiff price for because they are new An Advertising Thought Some born great some have greatness tnurst upon them others advertise The merchant who sits down and waits for business to come to him will find himself among the left over baggage when the Empire State express of business success needs tbree things knowledge push and advertis ingAdvertising isnt an art its just ap plied common sense Advertising is naturally a creative force Since it has been applied to modern commerce there have been created dozens of com modifies and branches of trade that did not exist before its advent The 8600000000spent annually in this country for publicty has cost price of any farm produced article can only be ascertained in this way An exchange very correctly says There is an item of expense in farming which is rarely taken note of in estimating the cost of a crop either by the buyers or the seller It is the drain upon the stored fertilizing ele ments of the soil the wear and tear the expenditure of capital which must b replaced each year in some way or there will be progressive depletion and ultimate sterility Few farmers realize that in selling a ton of corn they are selling particles of the land which at market price will cost in selling a ton of wheat 89 in a ton of timothy hay Turkeys Turkeys I will pay the highest market price for 10000 turkeys on foot delivered at any station on the K C road be tween Richmond and Rowland W S Fish Paint candidate and floater In a recent primary held in Harrison county adds this sound and timely advice Candidates themselves are not to be so severely censured as is the state or publld morals a corrupt and vicious public sentiment that condones for gets or excuses disreputable practices through anxiety for the success of party favorites The Democrat has sincerity and honesty of men who seem to hold that politics is but a legitimate license for the buying and of votes for forgery and theft for debauchery and who at the same time believe that actions of a similar nature in business of private life are to be condemned estopped and punished as the law decrees Hon esty is honesty wherever it is met A deplorable condition confronts a com munity when officials are to be chosen to execute the law by electors who have been bought or made drunk in direct violation of law by these officials Now we would not censure any man or set of men above others More than Pjobable It is that the cadldates would gladly have escaped the fearful ordea to which they were subjected They were mercilessly bled where a drop of blopd remained and in selfde fence on some occasions they were torced to hide out to escape their persecutorsA state of affairs And yet we say the candidates would have avoided it if they could What is the remedy AN AWAKENED PUBLIC CONSCIENCE The people can stop this thing if they will The overwhelming mass of citizens are lawabiding and honest in politics as well as in business They desire an honest and proper of public affairs They want men in office who are best qualified to conduct the affairs of the county They want the campaigns and elec tions conducted with honest and de cency How can the people effect this Discourage early announcements Pledge to no man a year in advance of tne election Support nobody who uses whiskey or money or both as a campaign Consider the disgrace brought on the country Discuss the matter with your neigbors and friends Convince them that by concerted action reforms can be accomplished Denounce and the floater And the candidatescan protect him self and the comunity by Not announcing early Using no money or whiskey Cultivating and soliciting the influence of men who stand for clean campaigns Discharging the floater Standing and decency Is this only a dream of practical politics PerhapsSometimes dreams come true RECTOR OF ST
