Press League Lancaster 13 1906 A woman somewhere out in Nebraska wrote to Mrs Roosevelt asking for a handkerchief for a bazar in aid of a building fund In the course of the letter she wrote that she and her husband were Democrats our president God bless him is mak ing it very difficult for us to know where we are at The president took it upon himself to answer the letter for Mrs Roosevelt and toward the close of his epistle which was a good one and worthy of preservation wrote It is of michtly small portarice whether we are Republicans or Democrats butjt is of very real importance that we should be good Americans and do our duty in straight and decent fashion This sentence is one worthy of being embalmed in the memory for it contains the whole duty of all of us whatever our shade of partisan politics If the admonition contained in his words were heeded by the people at large there would s not be so many investigations and so many exposures that would wound Z the sensibilities of every honest and decent citizen The neglect to do this is what is creating the necessity for the government ti prominent a part in functions which might better be left with the individual citizen or at best to the separate state Theo dore Roosevelt has said and written many good things but there are but j few of them which should sink deeper into the heart than the sentence quot ed above Profanity is undoubtedly on the decline in this country Big oaths y used to be common in nearly all classes of society But now swearing as it is called is out of favor not so much perhaps because it is profanity as because it is considered vulgar There has however certainly been a reat brakdown in the observance of Sunday both as a day of worship and a day of rest It has become now vary largely a day of play and that multitudes may be able to amuse themselves it is neccessary that tens of thousands of others would work Formerly no play house was opened on Sunday evening in the city of New York Now theatrical under the thin veil of sacred concerts are given in many of the theatres It is yet to be seen what will be the economic and moral re suits of this growing departure from Sunday observance There is certain comfort in religion not found elsewhere The Atlanta Con stitution tells of a man in jail who sent a letter asking for some means of re lief John old feller this is to let you know that your untie is in jail wants you to send him his fiddle his slippers a jug of the kind ocorn liker he likes best an a hymn book with the hymns he knows in it sos he wont lose his religion in these ungodly sur roundings It was a combination for saving a mans soul that certainly was unique if not convincing One of King Edwards ancestors was a bricklayer He was one who shed some luster upon the dynasty for bricklaying is more honorable than pipe laying for unearned salaries to the extent of milions as practiced in late days The St Louis man who killed because he caught only three small fish after an allday effort was not a real fisherman A real fisherman a true follower of Walton dosent ex pect to catch fish in fact he doesnt go after fish A Rochester N Y minister bought a glass of beer in a saloon after legal next day as an object lesson The number of glasses the congregation carried under their belts is not given The Chicogo professor who has wagered 825000 that he can go for a whole year without telling a lie had 1m children of the way he did when he was a boy hundred woman school teachers of Cleveland have stopped teaching of wives There is no doubt of it The old assertion that the local op tion law cannot be enforced has been disproved right here in Lancaster and the success lies with the appointment of police of ficers who are absolutely fearless and determined to enforce the law Thetemptation to sell whisky in a local option town is very great as the tiger has no license to pay no high rent no barkeepers no free lunch and his receipts are consequently almost clear profit as the brand of whisky sold is of cheapest and meanest it is possible to obtain The Lancaster policemen watch every move made by suspicious characters so it dosent take much time to locate an offender The Record is thoroughly convinced that it is absolutely impossible to buy a drop of whisky or beer in Lancaster and the stamping out of the traf tic is due entirely to the appointment of men who will first obey the law themselyes and then enforce the law Crab Orchard Springs- It was the writers pleasure to spend Sunday at Crab Orchard Springs and the ts of the state It is estimate in the address that at least twenty five more counties will soon be free from saloons under the operation of the county unit law and says the next General Assembly will be asked to to amend the law as to make the county unit effective over the entire State as was contemplated in the bill before the last Assembly which bill was so as to exclude from ils pro visions
