altogether To Prevent Houseburn W B Hawkins a prominent farmer of Fayette county and leader of the Burley Tobacco Growers Association has the following in the Lexington Observer House burn or rotten to bacco is the worst of all tobacco How to prevent that is the question When the weathercondltions are such that the stalks get sticky when the mould gets in every thing in the house when the air is heavy and still damp and foggy look out for houseburn Be very careful that no wet tobacco is hung in the barn and as soon as you suspicions even if it is begin ning to strut it is time to be up and doing by artificial what the north or west winds fail to do by nat ural means My remedy is to get up a dry current of air at once and you will be surprised how quickly it can be done Leave your barn open and fire Do not make one or two big fires but make twenty or thirty little fires all over the barn floor not bigger than your hat made of charcoal or woods that will burn with a blaze you will run the house burn out horsefoot and dragon in twelve hours Remember an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure I 2 coli sand r T L Yantis In f t 11 J r C f e t t NewsIt 1 1r i i I afford uf us turned our minds u our and incidents of life on the sea and prepared to enjoy the con ditions whatever they might be All ostentation was soon supplanted by gcnuiness for strange inward feelings had taken possession a view c f vJiltc serious faces had taken the place of smiles and complacency and the con tinuous blow of the fog horns added to the misery of the afflicted Mr So and so or Miss or even Mrs was on the third day out Uncle James Cousin Briggs or father Johnson and the meeting of the table steward was looked forward by all as th3 really main event of the day The dignified ministers had even become confirmed gourmands and the meeting of old man in his pajamas returning from his morning plunge was as a sight as the Jover seated in the starlight with pictures in his fancies mind of the future In all conversation it has been a fact that I have rated with much pleasure how frequently the gentle who conceived the plan of giving us this delightful trip have been spoken of and continued thanks have been ex pressed and we shall always be grateful Johnson especially for being so lovely to us in every way that he could to add to our pleasure One the grestest life saving event has been reported to me by a young scout travelling alone who through the generosity of the genial guide gave a priest suffering from homesickness or seasickness a drink of Green REv er whiskey which immediately re stored him from a sedate mortal to a frisky youth Our landing at Gren och Scotland was a great relief to those who continued ill all the way and all happy to see land again also to begin our tour in the Aultl Countrie of beautiful old Castles Palacesand the mountains of marvelous beauty known as Trossachs in Scotland Alps In Switzerland and Black Forest in Germany The magnificent Art Galleries that France and England are so noted impressed me wonder fully Each place we visited people treated us royally and always us with a dinner dance orrecep tion The New York papers I must say gave the Frenchmen a harder blow than they really deserved and not one of our party roasted them quite so bad but when we think of the mostly were England Scotland Switz erland and Belgium England for its supreme elegance and aristocratic manner that reigns among them Scot land and Switzerland for their beauti ful scenery and Belgium for its noblE ity and selfprotected freedom Our stay in Belgium being too short to see everything but the few points of we did see were the Spanish prison and Weirtz Art Gallery that impressed us deeply To see the Gallery you would not wonder that Weirtz went crazy and it seems impossible such a man ever lived that his mind so drifted to paint plct ures that differ so entirely m imaglna tion and sad subjects From Brussels to Anowerp and a drive around the city was ended at the dock to board the dear old steamer Finland for New York All were happy that we had turned homeward despite of all the pleasures that our minds only for the being The Finland being a much larger vessel than the Columbia of course more people were on board new friends to make We found a great deal of pleasure in all and es pecially Miss Jennie Manhelmef the College of Music of Cincinnati Directress of the and Dramatic Art Department She gave us one of her choice selections Merely Mary Annon Friday even before we landed which was fine and and could not have been more appre elated by any audience than the one on board The Captain gave a danceon Saturday evening and the upper deck was illuminated all enjoyed greatly until the wee hours Thence our physicists of this city that there are now fully two hundred eases of typhoid fever in the city of Harrodsburg and Mercer county but thus far the deafli raic has been very small Most of the Ca ses are in a mild form however and the physicians think the disease has about spent its force With the proper nursing and sanitary restrictions a deal of this dreadful disease could be prevented It is an old proverb but nevertheless a true one that filth breeds disease There has been a great deal of speculation as to the cause of the present epidemic ot fe ver It is the contention of many that it was brought about by drinking the water supplied at the fair grounds during the fair The Democrat has interviewed several of the physicians in regard to the matter and while they would not state positively that the water was responsible for the enormous amount of sickness yet they say that it is probable that it had much to do with It The water was procured from old Gore Spring which is in close touch with the town creek It is said that the water from the creek had overflowed and that instead of getting the water from the spring it was really the creek water While there are perhaps some few persons with the fever who did not attend the fair and drink the water the majority of them did Mercer county however is only one among the many places throughout the country which is just now in the grase of this disease From almost every section of the uni verse come reports of the presence of fever in more or less violent form A traveling man in the city yesterday said that almost every
