the re taU merchants of the smaller cities and towns writes Freberic J Haskin hi the CourierJournal A vehicle dealer in an Indiana town was attempting to sell a 65 buggy to a customer There was an hours talk over it and then the prospective custo mer pulled out a page of a catalog and said he believed he would send for a 49 47 buggy pictured therein The dealer protested that his 65 buggy was worth more for the difference in price that the freight on he buggy would be 7 or S3 but to no avail Finally the merchant said Well to tell the truth I have a buggy upstairs exactly like the picture in your and I will let you have it for 49 27 thus saving you the freight All right responded the delighted customer lets go up and see it Not on your life replied the dealer That buggy we sell sight unseen just like the mail order Fuse sells it We cant show a buggy at that price The customer thought awhile then bought the buggy Dog Lost On May 6 between Hubble and Lancaster A bright red Shepherd Farmers The discovery of barytes in Garrarc county points to the duvoloping into large proportions of a feature whit will brink much money to our people It has been found that the mineral is here in unlimited quantities and that too of the best quality The Record had a talk with Mr E H Jones vice president and general manager of the Clinch Valley Barytes Co this week and he tells us the Garrardcounty is far superior to any vet found in Kentucky 11 is company wants all the barytes they can get and are shipping it as fast as it can be hauled from the mines At present they are operating in the Marksbury neighborhood Barytes is found in a vein which begins at the surface of the earth There is no telling how deep it runs as in one place workmen have already have gone to a depth of 30 feet aiid there is no sign of exhaustion In some places it only reaches a depth of a few feet however being found just as in any other mineral It is a hart substance almost as firm as coal but more easily broken It is gotten out by blasting The mineral is then load ed into wagons and hauled to Lancas ter where it is weighed placed in and shipped to Honaker Va where the piano is located Barytes is used in making paint machanical rubber goods and other articles It is ground as fine as powder and sold to the paint factories and other firms using it It has been found of inestimable value in paint as it contains a substance which adds greatly to the durability of the paint A filler is used in all paints rubber goods etc but all those heretofore used have proven or detract from the durability thereof instead of usefulness As stated above barytes has been found to contain a substance which adds to the life of the article in which it is placed thus causing manufacturers to seek it and use it in preference to the old Heretofore barytes has been imported from Germany possibly half the amount used being found in this country Of the quantity used bly ninety live per cent is placed in plants and colors the remaining five per cent going into the manfacture of mechanical Rubber goods The chief trouble in the mining of the Garrard county burytes is that of vetting it to the rail road the present mines being located about six to eight miles from town However this is proving a good thing for those owning wagons and teams as they get good prices for their work The company when barytes is located makes a con tract with the laud owner for the amount of barytes taken therefrom and it is mined hauled to the depot tad weighed the landowner receiving iiis pay accordingly As the company paying out from 700 to 800 per week in the county the discovery of the mineral was indeed a rich find fur our people The Clinch Valley people are looking for all the barytes they can lind and as it is quite mineral will be found in unlioji ted quantities the outlook for the placing of many dollars into the pockets of the Garrard county is quite rosy Mr Huskew Hurt is here as manager for the Clinch Valley Co lIe and Mr Jones meutioned above are typical gentlemen fine business men and have made many friends among our people Kentucky Fair Dates The following are the dates fixed for representative of the National Council of Evangelical Free Churches London England He is in this coun try for five months under the direc tion of the evangelical commission o the National Congregational Council and his itinerary Tias been by Rev Dr Newell Dwight hulls the Plymouth church Brooklyn The evangelist says that if he accepted the invitations given to him already he would have to remain in this coun try two years His wife and daughter are with him The latter sings with her father in the meetings Mr Smith closed a months cam paign in the upper West Side of New York in which all the evangelical churches were united the last of Octo her He opened a mission in Tremon Temple Boston Mass the first November and continued this until the end of the month In December he visited several New England cities He is booked for Chicago tho month January while in February and March he will divide his time between Peoria and Galesburg Ill and Clinton Cedar Rapids la The mission in New York was considered a marked sue cess by all the pastors of the churches Mr Smith filled the church every night clear weather or rain and on Sunday evenings about many were turned away as found en trance although the other churches the neighborhood held their service Gipsy Smith is not such a preacher one of the pastors hut he wins men and women to Christ because he is so dead in earnest has power back of him and that the power of the Holy Ghost The evangelist is a gipsy not only in name but in reality Indeed first name is Rodney His father and his progenitors for generations back were gipsies belonging to tribe of Tachno Romanies He born in a gipsy tent not far from Lon don His mother died and left young children His father was con verted and never rested until all children were also Christians In of his sermons in the West End Pres byterian church New York Mr Smith made the statement that nothing all the world could make him doubt Gods power to accomplish any of purposes when he knew by actual ex perience that He could raise a man up from a gipsy wagon and make him preacher of the glorious gospel give him the unutterable joy of lead ing thousands of men out of darkness into Gods glorious light and that He could produce five evangelists from one gipsy tent The English evangelist speaks most beautiful English but he taught himself entirely from books mostly the Bible he never having re ceived any regular school education He states that he did not come to this country to make a reputation he left that long ago where he left his sins at the foot of the cross He also says that all that he is he owes to his father His autobiography which was issued a few years ago is dedicated To my Father to whom under God owe all that I am The man who talks about cronies of my acquaintance have had a unique way of celebrating their friendship on Christmas day Punctually at noon on December 24 they meet at a certain rendez vous and Bill opens the game by buy ing a quart of wine When this is consumed Tom makes a purchase of a second quart the drinking of which consumes much time and the story of their years is told and retold The finale which is an act of great seriousness consists of Bill going down into the depths of his trousers and pulling forth a 20 gold piece which he presents to his chum as an evidence of sincere apprecia tion Without the loss of a second Tom makes a dive for his pocket and extends to the other a double eagle accompanying the gift with fervent expressions of everlasting friendship This quaint custom ap pears to be original with the prin cipals of my story and without going into detailed argument it would seem their plan is not altogether without merit Washington Herald Firers of Fatal Shot Unknown You know how a soldier traitor is put to death said the colonel The traitor stands blindfolded and half a dozen privates shoot at him But perhaps you dont know that each of those privates though he take the most careful aim may after ward say without fear of contradic tion that the traitors blood does not stain his hands This is the reason Two of the rifles for this ghastly shooting are al ways loaded with blank cartridges Then they are shuffled and no one knows which the harmless ones are The executioners draw and each is as like as not to draw a harmless gun So when they shoot they can solace themselves for their unChristianlike work with the thought that mayhe they are only shooting a blank at the poor blindfolded wretch before them Hit the Lawyer Hard Joseph H Choate the famous law yer and diplomat
