crown went to Cincinnati on the excursion Sunday We trust the police will continue the war on worthless dogs The Record will be printed next Tuesday night Remember Mrs Zimmer will have a fine dinner on the fairgrounds next week The living dutchman will be kept out of hearing of the band this year GoodDuring the storms of last week Minors mill was struck by lightning and a portion of the roof torn away The Cotillion Club will give a big ban Tuesday evening A dance will likely be given each night of tbe fair Tbe new laundry will cause many colored wasberwomen to lose their jobs This means more cooks Good Business in the Police Court is ex ceedingly dull Judge Armstrong does his duty consequently there are hew who dare disregard tbe law J c I C r I The colored fair will be held Aug 8 9 and 10 They will have the best ever held as all bands are working like Trojans for it When the new laundry is opened it will put a number of washerwomen out of business so the cook proposition seems to grow brighter The City Council could well afford to hire and run a sprinkling cart during the three days of the fair What a bout it men To the fair directors Please abolish the screeching toy balloons and flying dutchman organ this year Signed A suffering public We understand the Crab Orchard fair people will lose money on the The farmers were too busy to give up teams to attend anything last week and the result is not suprising Officers Beazley and Herron gathered in and Milled twelve dogs in last few days This is indeed good work and if many more worthless canines would be dispatched the people would be thankful Ridiculous Last week when Mayor Woods of Richmond went into a suspicious looking grip supposing it contained whisky for illegal sale he was arrested on complaint of the owner Instead of placing the big hearted Mayor a rock pile the trial judge should and doubtless will present him with a large chromo Joy In The Record Office All hands from editor to devil in The Record once are rejoicing over the fact that Miss Carrie Hatcher has returned from Atlanta and resumed her position in the office She was al most raised in this office coming here when a little girl and her return means that we will be enabled to get the paper back to its former standard in point of excellence in amount of reading matter and otherwise Miss Hatcher will resume her duties Satur I venture astride gilt framed day r gem 1 When Drouth Sets In Stanford H Traylors license to sell whisky by the quart will expire Aug 12 after which date five gallons is the least he can sell The license of the Bule Wing saloon at Rowland expires Aug 18 Exchange Saturday The ladies of the Baptist church will have an exchange in the Stormes room on Danville street Saturday afternoon They will serve ice cream and cakes and also have for sale a number of cakes eggs butter chick ens etc Here is a good place to lay in provisions for fair week and you had better call early A Good Dinner Assured One of the wisest moves made by the directors of the Lancaster fair was that of securing R Zimmer to serve the dinner on the grounds This means that every person who enters the dining room will be given a strict ly first class dinner and be waited on in the best manner possible So well do our people know this that they will not go lugging a great basket of pro vender to the grounds but will buy tickets and eat a dinner in a comforta ble place on the fair grounds The people are grateful to the officers for securing Zimmerand not forcing them up against the sandwich and gasoline tinted coffee Be Patient If your telephone dosent work well or you are delayed in the service please remember that the Bastin Telephone Co is now undergoing the terrible ordeal of moving its offices The whole establishment is being moved from the Stormes block to the handsome quarters over the new Gar rard Bank Trust Co Everthing is being replaced with the newest and most up to date apparatus and in a few days Lancaster and Garrard county will have the best telephone service in Kentucky There are almost five hundred wires to change and run but most of this has been done and as stated above Lancaster will be given the very best money can procure The public does not realize the work requlr ed to move or the people would feel more like pulling off coat and helping instead of kicking For you fair lunch pickle olives cheese cakes uneeda biscuit fruits etc It GUI Walker ft Simpson I JournalW railroad theCof Ices Important Notice The Fiscal Court of Garrard county at its April term decided to pay no claims for work done on county roads by teams of the various hands allotted to roads unless the accouuts were tiled and verified by the road overseer in charge that the account is correct and that the claimant performed the work for which the account is The form for these accounts can be obtained by the road overseers of the county frum the county judge or the county attorney Killed By Lightning During the storm of last Thursday afternoon lightning struck and in stantly killed Jack Partin at his home near town Mr Partin was sitting on the back porch talking to his father when the storm came up He remark ed that he was afraid of lightning and the two arose to go into the house when a bolt struck him on the head passing through his body following the floor into a room and setting fire to the house A American Laundry Co Cincinnati and was in stalled by Mr G M Settle an expert machinist and a most agreeable and pleasant gentleman The new estab lilisment has cost the owner Herndon Herndon a large amount of money and we believe our people will show their appreciation of the enterprise by giving it all their work The laundry is thoroughly equipped for handling collars cuffs shirts in fact anything to be washed and will attend to the work at very reasonable prices A feature which will be hailed with de light by our people is that of family washing All kinds of goods be laundered and in They think a horse is a horse the world round and that there is but little difference ex cept in size an dweight Experience and observation has taught me that the slope of the shoulder has more to do with the horseS ability than disposition or other points The horse with the shoulder such as Different Types of Horses shown in Fig 1 which is almost per pendicular will be able to pull a heavy load without injuring his shoulders The collar will not work up and choke him and his shoulders will stand up well under heavy work A horse with shoulders like Fig 2 will stand ordi nary work and drive well but a horse with very sloping shoulders like Fig 3 is suitable only for use as a saddle horse Such a shoulder usually goes with a short coupling and well sprung ribs which are characteristic of a good saddler says Farm and Home A horse with very sloping shoulders cannot be worked at heavy drafting without a specially designed collar or it will work up on his neck and choke him if it doesnt make his shoulders SPRAYING AND DIPPING CATTLE Latter Process the Only Method Where Many Cattle Have to be Treated In South Africa is a disease very similar to Texas fever but the result of a different germ It is however spread in the same manner as is Texas fever by means of the tick The stockmen therefore are fighting the ticks and various methods are being used in this warfare One of these is the dipping of the cattle as in this country and another method is the spraying of the cattle In this spray ing kerosene is used and to it is sometimes added arsenic to make the effect of the spraying more Kerosene mixed with water is said to be harmless to the skin of the cattle and to cost only about four cents per head The cost of dipping is not much more but the cost of the dipping plant is considerable This is the claim of the men that practice the spraying and believe in it The men that hold to the dipping as the most effective means state their side of fthe argument thus Spraying requires five times as much time as does dipping On a small farm spraying may be the cheaper but on a large ranch where a thousand cattle must be treated the matter of time is a great one It as long to spray 200 cattle as it would require to dip a thousand Dipping destroys the ticks much more effectively than does spraying For this reason the dipping arrangement has displaced the spraying apparatus on nearly all cattle ranches that carry large numbers of cattle LIVESTOCK NOTES The best medicine you can give a sick hog is to stop feeding till he shows some signs that he wants to eat The end in view in keeping sheep is profit and the question is how best to conduct the business to obtain a profit from the growing of wool or muttonAs as can be done the flock should be selected and culled so that there will be but one grade of wool welltreated fleece as no matter how meritorious each may be the best prices cannot be realized To know how to care for sheep so as to make them grow the largest and finest fleeces and the most lambs is the most important part of flock management Dont want your horses to have the heaves No of course not Then stop feeding them dusty hay If you must use it sprinkle it well with water with a little salt added now and then Market Grade Known as Stags Stags are hogs that at one time were boars beyond the pig stage and have been subsequently castrated They sell with a dockage of 80 pounds If they are of good quality and con dition and do not show too much stagginess they go in with the vari ous grades of packing hogs When they are coarse and staggy in appear ance they are sold in the same class with boars The intermediary grades sell for prices ranging between these extremes dependent upon their from stagginess and their qual ity and
