all day and they cause no end of annoyance to the hands The strange part is that those who butt in most never contri buted a copper toward paying for the house Enforce the vagrant loafing white men as well as on the poor negro I Look After the Chimneys Now is a good time to see that the chimneys are all right It may save much trouble as a fire means more than the burning of a building gener ally Get the flues in good shape for winter fires and see that all cracks crevices and holes made by loosened mortar are all made safe See that a safe place is made in which the daily ashes may be emptied without danger of setting something to burning These may seem small matters but it pays to look after them Contract For Lancaster Men The contract for putting in the steamheating and plumbing for the new hotel has been awarded to Ease den Bros The entire building is to be heated by steam and running water will be placed in every room This calls for much work but as the Basel den Bros are prepared Northwestand will combine them All of the mills in the East have been combined It is predicted that within twelve months the price of paper will advance to six cents per pound That will cause the disappear ance of penny papers and an increase in subscription rates of every paper in the United States The dollar week lies will all have to raise to 1 50 or a year or cut down the size of their papers We do not Know how soon it will come but it is not far off A Correct Definition Some one has asked the question What is a friend It is the fellow who will inconvenience himself for you It is the man who will sit by your bedside when your frame has been touched by disease It is the man who will come to you when the clouds are black when the muttering thunders of misfortune growl along the sky It is the man who will say be dis couraged I see you are in trouble let me help you out It is not the man who will do you a kindness only when he feels he will get back full value for service rendered Remember that all who write their names in fancy script in your friendship album are not your friends To Get Better Prices The American Society of Equity of Grain Growers whose National headquarters are at Indiana polisIndianahave made arrangements to store several million bushels of grain at Kansas City and St Louis at reasonable rates for storage and and on such conditions that the grain so stored may be sold by the party storing it or his appointed agent wherever and whenever desired have also been made to advance within 2 cents per bushel on wheat 12 cents per bushel on corn etc of current prices Provisions of advance money on stored grain carries with it a guarantee that not over 7 interest be charged on money ad yanced on grain so stored This is one of the biggest moves ever m de by the organization known as the American Society of Equity to induce farmers to hold their grain off the market until their prices will be paid Ex Gov Bradley Speaks in Lancaster This is the busiest season of the year with the farmers corn is to be cut wheat sowed tobacco cut and housed and hemp cared for but the stock was given a rest and the tools left idle in the field today while the people vied with each other in doing bonor to Garrards favorite son Gov W 0 Bradley who spoke at the court house at one oclock to one of the crowds ever gathered there the court house being crowded to its capacity and as many more who were unable to net in The circuit court room was decorated with flags and the work of the ladies of tne town who were in attendance in large and the surroundings which faced the Governor were enough to inspire a much less eloquent speaker Governor Bradley was born and reared in Gar rard and only left here a few years ago to reside in Louisville but the peo pie of Garrard still claim him as their own and never miss an opportunity to give evidence of their love and esteem for him and whenever he is billed to speak here no matter what may be his theme he can always count on the people turning out en masse to hear him Bobs Fair Genial Hite Barrickman editor of the Jeffersonian prints the kind words about our former Robert E Hughes The press of Kentucky has been profuse in lauding Bob for the success of the fair for which his friends here at Home are duly grateful Hite speaks thus The Kentucky State Fair at Louis vine last week was an unqualified success The weather was perfect the exhibits in every department were excellent the details of the big un dertaking worked out just as planned and the attendance was greater than even the most sanguine expected Every official and employee of the an nual event performed his duty ad mirably and the results must necei sarily be good while the future could not be brighter Back of this out come looms the genius and the person ality of one man a dynamic power that has proven irresistable Robert E Hughes redheaded child of a Moses in the wilderness a strenuosity outrivaling Teddy Roosevelt one of whom every man woman find child in Kentucky should be proud and one beloved by the fraternity of the state without any exception To him more than else is the success of the State Fair Interested In Preservation of Records- in Court House Vaults Look here do you mean that if the Court House should be destroyed by fire that the title to my land would become defective a gentleman The Record yesterday We replied that the title would not be invalid but that if he wanted to sell his land to please be so kind and to tell us where he would go for facts and figures to make his deed Well he replied 1 had not thought of that Now that is the problem every voter should consider when he goes to the polls next month No matter who is elected govenor the protection of your deeds mortgages etc is of far more importance If Hager or elected youll still have to work hard to make a living but if you own piece of property you want the title thereto preserved As stated in last issue of the Central Record the vaults at the county court house are absolutely unsafe and if the old hull should catch fire all records would be either consumed or be so mutilated by water as to make them worthless Under that conditions who is so as to vote against the proposi lion of voting a small sum to make a safe place in which to store the public records The present court house is disgrace to a county of the wealth and prominence of Garrard and we must say that we are ashamed of the fact that the last effort to have it put shape was defeated While the editor of The Record claims no credit for the improvements made in Lancaster or Garrard county during the period we have been on tne tripod yet we do claim that we have kept several muchneeaed improvements before the people until they have come to see their need In speaking of the greatly needed repairs on the we wish to again remind the people and taxpayers of the fact there are several parts of the building so di lapidated and rotten that there is of pieces falling to the ground thus endangering the lives of Should someone be hurt in this manner it would mean a lawsuit against the county and a judgement would be rendered which would cost the tax payers more than enough to build a new court house outright We do not insist upon the voters have this work done simply to get a good made in Lancaster but simply the duty The Central Record owes readers in telling them of the absolute unsafe and inhabitable condition of their county court house If you have made up your mind to vote against the bond proposition we beg of you to make an inspection of the old hull fore you cast your ballot WILL NOT INCREASE THE OF TAXATION ONE CENT over the present rate Under the we fall to see why any sane man should be against the proposition Its simply a matter of plain business and every citizens whether he has deeds mortgages or other important matters of record in the public offices should consider the importance o placing the public building in a safe as well as a habitable condition Made Great Record Richmond Register The many friends of Mr Mat Cohen are very ified over the splendid showing he has made at the State Fair in Louisville this week His mount Edna Mae won first honors due as much it is said to Mr Cohens superb riding as to the excellent quality of mount The Louisville papers in the most eulogistic terms of Mr hen stating that he had no superior as a rider in the country His hand ling of his horses is perfect and it is an inspiring sight to see him for honors Put him on a good horse with the band playing and the audience cheering and hes undoubted ly king of the tan bark ring A Much Abused Privilege Of the many privileges extended to patrons by the merchants of the South nothing has received the abuse like the present six monts credit system After the Civil War when money was scarce and hard to get and the rate 12 to 15 per cent and many people behind the merchants of this section of the South extended credit until the farmer and laboring man could get his money The credit being six and sometimes twelve months This old way has extended to the present time although the rate of interest has been reduced to 5 and 6 per cent and all of our States have long since gone to a thirty day basis Of late so many people have taken advantage of this old long credit period and do not at the expiration of six monthsbut wait eight nine and sometimes before making settlement These facts have caused the merchants of Central Kentucky to do considerable thinking and in a great many towns the merchants are adopting the thirty day system Lexington adopted thirty day system some years ago it only remains a question of a very short time until Lancaster merchants will be compelled by the force of cir cumstances to do likewise Taken Up Cstray Black sow Sunday morning In Lan caster Owner can have same by prov ing property and paying for her keep apd this notice 2fc Lancaster When central and southwestern Kansas were settled the prairie was strewn with buffalo bones Those were hard times in Kansas and the gathering of these bones enabled the early settlers to live while they were getting their claims broken out for the producing ofcropsNinetenths of the pioneers of that section of there werent very many at literally noth ing but a team and few household goods that they had hauled from the east in a single wagon says the City Star Of course there were no buffalo for this was in the late 70s but their bones strewed the plains and these bones were the only thing that had a commercial value and they were utilized They were hauled in great wagonloads to the nearest railway often from CO to 100 miles away and sold The horns were the more valuable and they went first but the rest of the skeleton soon followed There were no fortunes made by these early bone hunters for a large load of bones brought only from five dol lars to eight dollars at the railroad towns but the proceeds from a load enabled the settler to buy a little flour coffee and occasionally meat and lum ber CHINAMAN NEEDED THE RICE Sing Had Found a Whole Tribe of His Lost Cousins A Chinese cook in one of the homes across the bay from San Francisco was terribly worried about his cousins who were in the burning town knew that Chinatown had been He had tried to go across to rescue his relatives but nobody was allowed to land He went about his duties with footsteps and mournful face For two days he ate nothing and the sympathy of the entire family was ex tended to him in his trouble At last he appeared one morning at breakfast time with a face wreathed in smiles Me found cousins he announced joyfully On being questioned he said that they were lodged in the two rooms which he rented for his own use in the lower part of the town They were all well and he was velly hap py He took 40 pounds of rice to them that they might not be hungry But Sing how many cousins have you Forty pounds seems a great dealHe smiled his charming oriental smile and spread his hands Me SO Big Tim in a Baedecker No sane man enjoys keeping a diary and no modern man writes voluminous enough a century every cat which passed out of the front door at dark was saluted by the sentry who presented arms to the pussy It seems that in 1S3S Sir Robert Grant governor of Bombay died in the government house Poona and on the evening of the day of his death a cat was seen to leave the house by the front door and to walk up and down a particular path precisely as the late governor had been used to do after sunset A Hindu sentry observed and this to the sepoys of his faith and they laid the matter before a priest who explained to them the mys tery of the dogma of the transmigra tion of souls In this cat he said was the soul of the deceased Gov Grant and it should therefore be treated with the military honors due to his excellency As however the original sentry could not identify the particular cat he had seen on the evening of the day of Sir Roberts death it was decided that every cat which uassed out of the main entrance after dark should be saluted as the avatar of his excellen cyThus for over a quarter of a cen tury every cat that passed out after sunset had military honors paid to it not by Hindu sentinels only but such is the infection of a superstition by Mahommetan insnlat r I ed compartments Where water pipes must be placed in the ground above the frost line or above the ground and fully exposed con structed frost box es are vastly to felt cork or other coverings These packing materials are usually worse than worthless because they are sure to become soaked from con densation on the pipe and thus to invite instead of repel frost This is especially true where the pipes lead to elevated tanks from wells of cold water be cause in any weather when the properly superior temperature is above that of the wa ter condensation is likely to occur The simplest construction of an ef fective protecting frost box says the Orange Judd Farmer is constructed with three dead air spaces well ceiled and extending from below the frost line up to the point of delivery at the tank or at the house After the pipe is in place a box tube of onehalf or threequarters inch stuff and six inch es inside diameter is built with the Cross Section of Frost Box pipe In the center It is then ceiled outside with tar paper Trimmers are then placed around the box to build another box upon a twoinch air space being left between the two boxes In like manner this box is ceiled and supplied with trimmers for an outside box of ship lap or matched boards to surround a second twoinch air space Frost boxes so constructed will be found effective in any climate and are fully as satisfactory as more constructed ones HOME WATER SUPPLY System of Piping Which Brings Com fort and Ease to One Farmer Farmers could have many more home comforts if they would judi ciously use
