Embry of Danville was one of the finest ever delivered in The President Mrs J A Royston had tile court house beautifuly decorated The Confederate veterans in full uniform attended the exercises and marched with the crowd to the cemetery where the graves of the departed were decorated The Harvest At sixty the harvest is on in full blast Great stacks of regrets tell of the misery which inevitably follows the sowing of bad seeds Life is the harvest Held and we select the seed which we sow Our responsibility lies in the sowing for tne reaping is sure to follow Where we have sows frowns harsh words intemperance lust and selfishness a large crop of thorns and thistles must be harvested and the gatherer of the harvest pricked in the heart while contemplat ing the tears the sighs the pain and the anguish produced by sowing such seed A verdant spot in the harvest Held springs from smiles and kind words spoken and charitable deeds done at sowing time The analogy is perfect and the rising generation should sow good seeds to avoid the throes the struggles and the remorse which inevitably follow the sowing of bad seed Sow smiles and reap roses good deeds and reap the proud satisfaction of having helped suffering humanity Farming Successful farming is a science which equires a higher degree of intelligence any of the so called learned The farmer comes in contact vith many serious Entered al the POll Office in Lancaster Ky Mail Mailer Member y Press Association I as Sec I Y FAR Class Lancaster Ky June 5 1908 The Senate passed the Aldrich Vreeland currency bill by a vote of 43 to 22 this action being taken after a day devoted to a filibuster against the measure Senators Stone of Missouri and Gore of Oklahoma occupied the time of the Senate after 703 oclock yesterday morning when M r La Follette retired Mr La Follette broke the record for long speeches holding the floor continuously for eighteen hours and forty three min utesMr Gore charged that the bill con tinues the ancient practice of farming out to private corporations the sover eign prerogative of coining the cur rency of the realm a practice which is as vicious as is the practice of farming out the power to collect taxes The pending measure is the begin ning of a new system and it is the be ginning of a bad system he declared It appears here under the specious name of an emergency currency and it is being passed by emergency State county and muncipal bonds in this measure are made the basis of an honest currency I predict that within from ten to twenty years these securities will be made the basis not Of an honest currency but of our or dinary currency While it may be helpful in times of financial trouble it may react in a way that would prove hurtful to the masses It was passed hurriedly as a compromise measure and savors of politics in seeking to cure effects of the panic and reconcile the million of labores to the party in power lion Harvey Helm being a mem ber of the Insular Committee will go to Panama and Manila for the purpose of informing himself on the question of our new possessions This is commendable in Harve and he is tall enough to take in the entire at a glance The manner in which Bryan smoked Taft out on the Publicity Bill is funny Taft will need contributions though from the trusts and rich corporations and the republicans defeated the bill The masses will and should defeat all such corrupt methods La Follettes long speechof IS hours broke the record but if we could send some of our lady friends to congress we could have speeches IS days long and kill I was a morphine fiend eh They look like needle marks dont they I feed them once a day he went on in the evening before bedtime Their supper occupies 25 minutes During it I read the paper At first feeding hurt me my arm was red and swollen and it itched like the deuce Now I dont mind it at all He turned down his sleeve and his cuff Feeding my fleas he ended I am as heroic a figure as the pelican moth er that tears her breast open that her young may nourish themselves upon her blood SOCIAL LAW THAT IS ADAMANT Impossible to Be AbsentMinded and Make a Success There are some rules for social that it is wholly impossible to ignore nowadays- It is the fashion to say everyone is badmannered and alas it is quite possible to be atrociously rude in some ways and yet be popular but there are one or two things one cannot do with any hope of achieving social distinction or even being merely tol erated These things are hidden however from those who fondly imag ine they can imitate all the faults of society with impunity It is the infringement or ignorance of these esoteric bylaws which be tray the outsider One such decree for example is that in no circum stances whatever is absentminded ness permissible One may leave notes unanswered but one must not be absentminded This is a distinc tion with a difference At a Chinese Funeral The London Saturday Journal in the weird rites at a Chinese funeral remarks that in the usual topsy turvy way of the Orient the Chinaman enjoys himself even at ob sequies The Journal adds The is placed beside the grave and food placed upon A white rooster alive or dead is usually there to lure the spirit of the man who has died abroad back to the home of his fathers Whisky and tea and a bowl of rice with chopsticks are there so that the corpse may not starve in the next world Gin and tea are then sprinkled over the coffin and the bottles thrown away The mourners stand around laughing enjoying the fun The coffin is lowered candles are lit a suit of paper clothes is burned and some pa per money Thus the corpse is as sured of clothes in the next world and pocket money to put in them First Aid to Farmers- A farmer in Ohio wrote to the de partment of agriculture that he had struggled for 20 years on an SOacre farm heavily mortgaged but had been unable to reduce his debt or rise above a poverty that made the bringing up of his family a humiliation He asked if there was any hope for him upon the farm or if he might as well give up the fight The requested that he make a report of his farm and its soils and upon this it based a plan of which he was recommended to follow to the letter According to a writer in the World ToDay there was a profit the first year of 2000 and the department believes that ul timately the despised SO acres can be made to yield 5000 a year Artificial Gems Last year a German association caused surprise to some scientists and disbelief in others by the announce ment that a process had been discov ered by which most of the precious stones could be produced by artificial means Recently several official experts have made an examination of about 40 of these artificial gems In their to the Museum of Natural His tory they say Of all the stones we examined we can only call the artificial rubies a direct success but the imitation of this species is no new invention We therefore declare that there is noth ing new or sensational in the new Real Honesty- A story is related of a young man who was recently married to the daughter of a wealthy merchant The groom did not have a penny but he was honest He was so honest that he would not even prevaricate in the marriage ceremony He was repeat ing what the minister said With all my worldly goods I thee endow read the minister With all thy worldly goods I me endow replied the groom This was real honesty Sketch Early Training How do you account for Caseys wonderful success as a politician The fact that he used to work in theditchHow that The day is past when we can to bo without ample barn room for all live stock The present prices of feed prohibit the old wire fence shelter and the prices of lumber will never be less and now they prohibit the old style of haphazard building having a building for each kind of stock and then most of the feed and the water from two to 20 rods from the barns This is an era of concentration and nothing can fa cilitate the intensive style of farming and concentrate a mans energies to his life work on a farm like a com modious comfortable barn Personally says a writer in Wallaces Farmer I I would not build a barn without a silo nor would I advise any one else do so as the barn and its proper use is the mainstay of our calling as soon j er or later we must all come to the keeping of live stock to consume the greater share of our crops and then carefully save and apply the manure made Nothing produces as much I feed per acre as corn and nothing saves corn so economically as the silo Neither would I build a barn of suita j ble size for a farm of SO acres or any other shape than round and the silo In the center but to avoid criticism on account of the silo I will j I C 1IQ4v lf rJ c o h1i a iJ afford outside to Ii I i morei 1 I 1 1C Advantages Plan of Barn say if a silo is not wanted the center space can be used either for granary or box stalls The round type of barn has these advantages First the same amount of outside surface used in square or rectangular barns will inclose a greater surface in circular form the circular form has the decided advantage of strength over the flat side Third the gable ends are total losses and are avoided in the circular barn Fourth the roof of a circular barn is selfsupporting and does not sag and is far less liable to damage from heavy storms Fifth the space inclosed is more convenient to use requiring less time and work to care for the same stock than in any other type of barn Here is a plan of the ground floor of a barn 58 feet in diameter having the same outside surface that a barn 3Gx 0 feet would have It pro vides room for 12 horses and 23 cows in stanchions having three feet for each cow This leaves eight feet behind the cows so a team and wagon can be used to clean the barn or if dairying is not fol lowed there will be 1150 square feet floor space which will 30 to 50 head of young stock owing to size Everything can be fed and watered from the one alley I defy anyone to comfortably house such a number of stock and as con venient to feed in any other than the round type of barn and in addition there is a space of 18 feet in diameter in the center to store feed in built a round barn that has proven satisfactory in every respect I can not speak in too high terms of it and while I would not build a round barn If building a small one believe that when we get to a size suitable for SO acres or more there is only one proper style round If sand gravel or crushed stone is convenient I would use cement to build the lower story of barn and if possible build so as to have a natural elevation on one side so a to be able to driye in the story without too much of a CANT EAT TOO FAST Feed Manger That Will Control Greedy Horse A box to induce a greedy horse to eat slowly is arranged through the 21 partition with just s a narrow opening f S1 at the bottom PU the grain m in the oox on the j outside of the par tition and the horse gets it- x slowly It saves grain and the horse takes more time to grind it A Wise Plan The wise man who bred two or three sows at about the same time can now attend to several young litters at once thus saving travel time and trouble At feeding and fattening time also the economy is apparent for they may be graded and sold then in a bunch with less fussing Pasture for Young Pigs The young pigs should be gotten out on the ground as early as possible to avoid their getting too fat A Grand Family Medicine It gives me pleasure to speak a good word for Electric Bitters writes
