1904 NO 37 From County Attorney- I am informed that false statements and unreasonable argu ments are being made to gain votes against me for the office of County Attorney some of which are1st Because I am attorney for the IJE railroad and connect ed with the Olay City National Bank 2nd That I have aided and ad vised the Fiscal Court to extrav agance and allowed myself claims to which I was not entitled As to the first I have been with time L E for fourteen years and connected with the bank ten years- I do not select my clients but as it my business to practice law I servo those who seek my service first and neither of these institutions have any connection with or voice in county affiairs and arenot even assessed by a county officer but are both as sessed by the State Board of Val nation at Frankfort by reports of certain statements made by their presidents to the State Auditor under the law found in sections 4000 to 4104 of Kentucky Stat utes and on page 1456 of last acts of the Legislature and the We Flooring doors Ceiling Blinds Varandas Stairways Shingles Etc Fronts auditor reports their valuation to County Clerk and he report- it to the sheriff for collection o taxes The L E has paid its property tax since 1802 at 1200 00 year but had no paidany franchise tax until was elected County Attorney and the first year I served I col lected from it 1140 02 propert tax and 1041 40 back tax on its franchise as shown by auditor reports in Clerks office and pai same to sheriff making total of 2488 08 as shown in his settle ment on page 187 of Sheriff set tlement book No 1 County Clerks office And collected from the bank the same yea 500 00 in back taxes and paid- same into the Fiscal Court as shown byorders on its records It was not the County Attorneys duty to collect tax und ho had no power to do so except when ordered by the court which the court did For this service the court allowed me 15 00 Thus it will be seen that I collected in back taxes the first year I wa in office 1811 40 from the ver institution from which complaint is made only 158 54 short of m salary for the four years fo which I was ejected 1 have seen ECONOMY 14Means Best goods at Lowest for years before I was elected The court may have erred in some allowances but I know they were hon est The court and tho County Attorney need more interest taken by the tax payers in their courts and more assistance from them in the way of advice as to the claims presented whether they are just or not I accepted this office three years ago at the request of my party notwithstanding the
