being raised any where in the county At every precinct in the coun ty but one Virden the ballots gave outand many were denied a vote on this ac count There were 25 per cent more ballots printed than there had over been Democratic votes cast in the county before and still there were not enough This shows that the Democrats have made wonderful gains in the past year or that a number of Republicans were allowed to vote in the primary We are inclin ed to think it is the latter One good way of demonstrating the fact is to wait until the Novem ber election and see if the Dem ocratic vote is as large then as it has been in the primary The county committee allowed for gains in every precinct and none o doubted but what this would be a plenty until the ballots be gan to run close There are 509 thoroughnessi with which precincts are organ ized Let each Democrat see that the careless voters of our party are brought out in Novem ber and the majority of the State is increased Every pre cinct in the county must be or ganized at once so let the party leaders look this matter up with out a day of delay During the campaign of the Democratic primary in this coun ty the attention of many Demo crats have been temporarily di verted from the national race now on land Wo are glad that the family affair has been settled and that we can now present a solid front to the common enemy Every Democrat is for the nomi nee and will support them and now the fight to swell theDpmo cratic majority in the grand old county of Powell is begun The vote of the primary showed a gain of fully 150 Democratic votes which we must maintain in November Every body up and a doing and the victory is ours When a negro is strung up in the South for committing a bru tal outrage on a white woman the sensitive soul of President Roosevelt shudders It grieves him to see the door of hope thus rudely closed forever on one of the wards of the nation But when horse thieves wore given short shrift in the West he ap proved the policy saying in his volume recounting his experiences as a ranchman In many of the cases of lynch law which have come to my knowledge the ef fect has been healthy for the community This change of view can easily bo accounted for The niggers have more votes than the horse thieves The most amusing feature of the campaign is the emetic of virtue which has turned the Re publican stomach side of its load of Hunterism inside out When it is understood that those most responsible for Godfreys over throw are renegade Democrats who have crowded to the front and driven the old line Re publicans from the patronage through it becomes a hilarious farce Hunter organized this state for victory for hispart when his present assailants were not heard of McKinley know his real character when he sent him to Guatemala The Republicans Of the 11th District were ac quainted with his record when they sent him to Congress The pure and saintly Belknap knew him from the crown of
