portion of the state to build turnpikes Apparently this maybe true but there is no excuse for the miserable condition of some of the roads in Powell county We have had much more rain this summer than usual and too we have had much worse roads The ruts in places ure abundant and the mud holes are very nu merous All of this is due to the lack of attention for wherever the roads have recently been properly ditched and piled up in the middle there are no ruts andI mud despite the heavy rainsI If we had pikes in the countyI it would be a cost to keep and it would be a great deal more than we could have good dirt roads for in the spring summer and fall Dirt roads with the proper attention are really bet ter during these seasons than pikes audit seems to us that weI certainly should have good roads at these times of the year It isI the show and freezes in the win ter that ruin our dirt roads but with the proper care we canI have good roads in the warmer seasons This has been demonstrated this wet summer If we cant have pikes let us have what we can afford the very best dirt roads Corn and Alfalfa Special Hubert Vreeland Commission erofAgrin thre of Kentucky has arranged with the railroads for the transportation over the State of the Corn and Alfalfa Special The train will run in September the object of the tour being to induce the farmers of Kentucky to take up the raising of alfalfa Experts will accompany the train and make demon strations and deliver lectures to the farmers at every stop New kinds of corn will also be intro duced Every farmer in the State should hear these lectures and give the production of alfal fa a trial Alfalfa is a species of clover yielding from three to five crops in one season and thriving equal ly as well in dry seasons as in wet lu fact it grows better in dry countries and Kentucky until recently has been consid ered too wet for the best crops However of late the crop does well in Kentncky and the culti vation of alfalfa is now considered ono of the greatest profit besides being a crop that will speedily restore fertility to im poverishedsoil 00Miss King representing Ha zel Green Academy and Prof Guun Principal Mt
