importance to Southeastern Kentucky is the proposed extension of the Lexington and Eastern from Jackson breathitt county the present terminus to Hazard Perry county and thence to the Pound Gap region near the Vir ginia line A corps of survey ors have been at wore on this extension for several days and it is understood contracts have been Jet for the construction of thirtyfiive miles of the total ex tension proposed of sixty five miles For some time such an extension has been considered and now that it is an assured fact renewed attention has been attrracted to several of the more remote mountain counties richer in deposits of coal even than the more favorably situated counties with railroad connection- sIn the counties of Letcher Perry Leslie and Clay several large companies from the East have had representatives during the past few years and immense sums have been expended in ac quiring territory nnd testing coal deposits Eight or twelve different veins hive been investig ated and coat has been found as high as twelve feet in thickness One Piece of Good Road The two rails of road between n t r- Typtonls ve been nicely graded by theuse of the road machine until it is now in al most the finest condition possible for dirt roads This action on the part of the proper authorities is very commendable and il is hoped that the movement will become more popular with all until every road in the county u put in the same good condition A New Road The new road from Walters ville to a point on Black Creek above the high water mark is be ing opened and will be ready fu travel in a few days The open ing of this road reflects much credit on the officials who are responsible for this much needed improvement It will now ena ble travel to go from here u Black Creek the nearest way action otheDemocratic party The Negro and Politics Samuel J Roberts editor of the Lexington Leader and a leader in the Republican party in Kentucky in answer to a de mand from negroes for recognition 6n the Republican ticket says nay No room for you Tins i is gentlemanly for SamHsh- ows decency on his part and will help to locally improve his party It is the negro question that has killed the Republican party when the negroes are to be found This is a white mans country and they certainly should run it and when any political party gets low enough down to place a negro on the ballot it is time for reformation and Bor Roberts has started it Heis to be congratulated for the stand ll lfHl f J J i V rel JVlW1 sure itis approved by all decent men of his party Over in Montgomery county however the Republican party has taken a different view of the situation so all who vote the tick et straight will be compelled to vote for the negro Henry Botts for coroner This action is in accord with the partys teachings s at Washington headquarters and will receive their commendation which is about all they can hope for in the face of such action Goes Us Much Better We Southerners are spoken as being cruel to negroes and etc and when we resent an insult from their hands our rural routes are stopped and postoflices closed and etc True enough vie string them up for certain crimes and it is also true enough that we string up whites for like perpetrations But we have never yet dynamited a negro church like they did over at Carlisle Ind last week For some time the two races have had trouble there resulting in the dynamiting the church and threat to run every negr out of town This is hard onTay lor Findley and other refugees A Well Qualified Candidate Many people are probably not
