Cooper was sus picioned on account of lavishly m at a saloon Saturday nightand was seen with firsearrested the negro claimed that the money was given him by his father His father confessed to having been spent before arrest The negro formerly drove a de livery wagon for Roses store but more recently has been work ing at Central Hotel He is in it bad now and will spend Ute greater part of the next few years in the employ of the Commonwealth at Frankfort The Good Roads in Estill Lust summer in our neigboring county Estill this side of Irvine a demand for Ian improvement oi the miserable mud roads took hold of some bf the enterprising citizens who atnostly went to Trry Jr X rfimi ft V oHllim KTttf with the prbper frethods applied a first class road vas produced for at least a few miles A subscrip Hon was asked from all persons possibly interested and tley in the majority subscribed liberal ly This with some aid from tin- county enabled the people to ge some road of fine quality for mountain county The road in the worst clay places was bedded withrock and then graveled making a fine pike Other ces not so bid were just gravelI ed The consequence was that last winter instead of the mir kneedeep clay mud roads these people had a fine road to travel into the county seat These few miles of excellent road were built at a possible cos of not more than two hundre- dollars per mile but the materi al of course was very conven ient to get All of this was brought about by a spirit of enterprise in the right direction and a determination on the par of the promoters Other coun ties can do the same thing if they will only go at it in the rightI wayFine Powell County Apples Charles A Conlee who lives near Stanton Was in the city Friday with a wagon load of as fine apples as we ever eery They were of the Ben Davis variety Land simply unsurpassed He I readily sold them of course such fine apples never strike dull market What Mr Conlee is doing ca- be n duplicated by others in Pow ell county and at the same time beii source of much proiitjtud pleasure If there was much of growers in the county there would soon be buyers here to purchaso every bushel at a l 1 yIA 011 r yl1 very fair price They would be shipped to the city and placed ini storage for winter market sery farmer should have an orchI I nrd of not less than four or lice acres and it should consist of n variety of fruit so if one kind got I killed others would bear Fruit on our 10 per acre land does better and yields as much per acre as it does 100 per acre land in the bluegrass but on this costly land some get rich growl ing fruit while we allow better fruit land to take to bushes and briars and complain of the poor country and hard times About Bridges It seems that Powell county in the matter of bridges is going to be outstripped by her neighbor willdbonds amounting in all to 45 00000 for the construction of three bridges in the county If the proposition carries Lee cotin ty will soon have three steel bridges across Kentucky river at important crossings From the proposition it will be seen that a bridge in Lee across the Ken tucky river is figured to cost five times what one costs across Red river in Powell county We in a few years are going to get some bridges without bonding the county The county is now out of debt the court house and jail being paid for aiuLwiiiiVH tntrnrnrgesi one anife
