Niagara river is a short stream JO miles long being the outlet for Lake Erie to Lake Ontario I thought the water above the falls would bo smooth but not so the clmnol for two miles above the falls is very rough has a steep descent with many big rock and small falls before it reaches the main cataract of 100 feet The Goat and Sister Island is just above the falls The stream that flows on the left side of this island makes the American Falls Lit tle stream flows further to tho ifi right makes the Falls of the Gave of tho Wind And still further to the right is the Canadian or main Horseshoe Falls where the water is said to be always 20 feet deep and where it pours at this point there can always be seen a rainbow when the sun shines The water where it pours over here looks two different colors blue and green On top of the falls on tho banks where the water doesnt flow isa three rail iron fence to keep visitors from falling over with sign boards which readscdflllger ugo slow dont venture in dangerous places and etc The banks below the falls for miles I are so steep that you can not get down to the waters edge only where man has made a way to get down There is an incline that runs down to tho waters edge Just below the fulls tho current of the river flows to the Canadian side that causes an ed dy water on the American side It is here the little boat called c Maid of the Mists that runs just below the falls On this boat you can go within 80 yards of the fall but you have to have on a gum suit to keep you dry as the mist will wet you like rain You neednt undertake this ride unless you have a big heart and a good head steady nerve The rapids are aboutone mile below the falls Hero tho water comes to the surface of the stream and this force with the great descent of the stream causes the water to get into so many shapes One billow after another j one wave after another then slosh to the bank throwing sprays 20 feet high for four miles I havent wordsto express how many shapes this water gets into nor how swift it Hows Never has anything yet been able to sim it A Mr Ramsey was going to try to swim the rapids the first Saturday in August but dont know how he come out I am quite sure if he did he will never try it again The channel of the river below the falls in the foundation of the world seems to have sunk down 100 feet Tho banks are so steep they are perpendicular und for miles down tho river you cannot get to the water The land both below and above the falls are as levelas can be just tho channel seems to have sunk down They have three suspension bridges across the river below the falls On tho American side of the river they have made a side cut on the bank of tho river and have built near the waters edge the George Electric Car route down to Lewiston on Lake On tario On the Canadian side at the falls they have a powerhouse In this power house at the edge of the falls they have sunk a shaft 100 ft deep then they have tunneled back under the edge of the falls 800 ft This tunnel is lit up with electric lights In order to reach this tunnel they put you in an elevator and let you down the 100ft then you can go back tho 800 ft dan look at the river flowing over you which is said to bo 20 ft deep In the tunnel are four places where you can see the river There is only one way for you to know the greatness grandeur and beauty of tho falls and that is to visit it personally And I would say to any body that loves the beauty of nature it would richly pay them to make a trip to the falls and when you como back you will surely say it is one of the soven wonders of the world Niagara is a nice little town of 20000 inhabitants has good hOe tels and police officers W E Hellin CONTINUED NEXT WEEK Mrs Sylva Russell principal Stanton Graded
