land in lIel1 fee and Wolfe counties for the purpose of operating coal mines oil and gas wells The coal lands of Menefee were work ed for a time and then abandon ed but the leases hold good as they were to run for 09 years The matter was dropped and the lands so leased from different persons passed into other hands in some instances and leased again Drilling for oil and gas was taken up by other companies and some of the fine gas wells now supplying Lexington Mt Sterling and Winchester with natural gas are on this land The matter will be taken to the courts to secure damage for the infringement on the lease rights of the McKinney heirs and Dol lins John W McKinney is in Covington now looking after the matter tI How long Charcoal Lasts In examining some of the old cinders which came from the old forge that operated here in Clay City no less than fifty years ago wo notice a great deal of char coal iutcrmixcdiwith Mie cinders and this charcoal is equally ex posed to the weather but it is in just as good stKtc of preservation as the day it wits piled out with this dross This is convincing of the wonderful preservative qual ities of post which has the end that goes into the ground burned to a charcoal You may also no tice a stump in a field that has the outside burned and you will find a stump that will be much harder than other stumps and one that will last a great deal longer than the others of the field The SmallPox Situation There are two new cases of smallpox in the Thacker home in the Western portion of the county All of the persons in the county exposed but one and he is missing has been vaccinated by Dr Williams and there is now but little danger of the dis eas spreading as the persons who may take it will be at once isolated Owing to the favora ble time of the year the dread disease is in a very mild form and no deaths are hardly ex pectedrNew Paper at Jackson It is reported that a new paper is to be started at Jackson Dem ocartic in gave her a few shekels We believe we are safe in saying ffie majority of these cases of cripples passing from town to town and begging do not merit any as sistance from the public and many are downright frauds Tile good book says Give to every one that asketh thee1 but it doesnt mean to give a drnukard money to buy whiskey it doesnt mean to give the baby a hammer and lookingglass because he authorized to announce Ones ntyCourtClerkocratic party The Reporter the Mt Sterling Negro paper says that if the Republican strata convention at Louisville June 19 indorses Taft for President fhe Negroes will bolt the ticket The paper very truly says the Negro vote has the balancing power in the Republi caaparty and it believes in the African race dictating that par tys nominees or not supporting them hence the note of warning sounded in the Reporter The Negroes dont like Taft because Roosevelt likes him r they do nt like Roosevelt because he disgracefully discharged a lot of Negro soldiers for killing one man wounding an other and shooting up the town of Browns ville Texas The President de serves the approbation of every I thoughtful citizen and the Re publicans of Kentucky could do nothing inside their party lint more elevating to themselves than toindorse his actions in the Brownsville affair and come out for Taft for President The trust harbored manufact urers are daily encroaching their merciless high prices upon the public The latest advance com ing in the staple article of spool thread It now costs the mer chants sharply over five cents a spool and to get a living profit they wilLhave to sell it at least for 7 or 8 cents a spool Even if the makers of thread were selling itat cost the recent advance of their output will now enable thmto make over 20 percent on nil their sales Capital in this business is undoubtedly turn ed over three or four times a years so there is but little doubt that the thread combination is now makingfyearly at least 50 per cent more oh the capital in vested than they were one year ago This is lagalized and pro tected by a hightariff which cuts out foreign competition Is this best for the masses If you thinks vote the Republican ticket thats what it means What is true in the tlddn cask is the same in a thousand other differ ent manufactured articles for which the American people are paying twice and trebble the cost of production Oklahoma iteemswill yet be held from statehood on the grounds of an objectionable constitution to the President but lie refuses to let his objections be knownto the constitutional
