Procto Bridge Company of Beattyvillo has just finished one of their fine steel bridges across the North Fork of Kentucky river at Beat tyville and opened it for travel While the toll rates over the bridge is much less than the old Terriage rates the toll collected so far shows a rate 10 per cent on the investment of 28500 the cost of the bridge When the company builds the bridge across South Fork which they will do at once this bridge will be still more valuable besides the value of the South Fork bridge within itself Every toll bridge that we know of is paying handsome dividends The bridge at Jack son which was built about ten years ago at a cost of 0000 has paid for itself n number of times and last year alone leased for a little over 4200 or about 70 on the investment The Beatty ville bridges will in a short time after they are completed be just as valuable property as the Jack son bridge A big line of new and uptodate Post Cords at the Drug Store They were the first long be remembered as the coldest and most unfavorable for crops and spring work for many yearlfi The same can be truthfully said of month of May The oldest inhabitants clam they have never seen a spring so cold and the conditions so unfa vorablo for work and growing crops Damaging frosts as late as the 28th of May Crops of all kinds are far behind and in most cases anything but promising And to add to the damage done by frosts and cool damp weath er the cut worms were never more plentiful and destructive doing great damage to young corn tobacco and garden truck The army worm has also gotten in destructive work in a large part of the State They first made their appearance in the western end of the State and gradually showed up until many counties in the central part arc affected by them Old mead ows pastures and many wheat fields fell an easy prey to their ravages In some localities corn fields and early planted tobacco were damaged by them The low condition of meadows pas tures and clover is largely ac counted for by these invaders Much of the corn land has not yet been planted on account of too much cold and wet and ma ny fields of the ehrly planted had to be plnted over The acreage compared with n five year aver age is a little short being 06 per cent Condition is 77 per cent which is fairly good considering the weather and worms The acreage of wheat is 00 per cent of a five year average Con dition is 82 u falling off of seven points since our Mav report The oat crop is a little short in acre age and has fallen off in condi tion from 83 in May to 70 at this time Rye is some better in a creage and conditions Hemp is 83 per cent of a five year average and 00 in condition Over 25000 in Premiums Despite a monetary loss duo to rainy weather last year the Di rectors of the Blue Grass Fair have agreed upon a premium list carrying even larger value than offered in 1000 The aggregate of the premiums to be given will amount to very nearly 180000 The classifications have been so arranged that there can be no possible confusion on thejart of exhibitor and judges Breeding and show classes have been entirely separated For each lib eral appropriations have been made and different exhibitions A preliminary prize list setting forth in full all the classifications for live stock has just been is sued It is pronounced the best prize list ever issued by any fair association in America not ex ceptingthelargest and most prom inent State fairs Copies of it will be mailed to all prospective exhibitors upon request to Jouett Spouse Secretary Lexington Ky
