Breathitt He was shot twice the two bullets entering his face and penetrating the head The wounded man was taken to a Lexington hospital and Davis arrested and put in jail Fulks was assisting a soninlaw at a lunch counter and the trouble is said to have come up over making change Mr Folks married a sister to Mrs Burrel of this city and for a time resided here where he was regarded as a quiet swarm into the city They came in buggies on horseback in big wagons and on foot Each train unloaded several hundred until the crowd increased by 10 oclock to one of the largest ever seen in Clay City The grounds for celebration were located under the beautiful shade trees juts beyond the grade crossing There were many sources of amusement on the grounds while at intervals the K P Band of North Niddle town employed discoursed the most beautiful music Elders R D Harding of Day ton Ky J D Hunter of Can nel City Ky and the Hon 0 W Barnett of this city were the Junior speakers of the occa sion Every body seemed pleasure bent and it was the quietest crowd overseen in Clay City No whiskey on the grounds and but one arrest and that for drunkenness only which was ef fected out of town Every body peaceable and quiet This shows what people can do when they will and it seems to occur but in a local option town All praise to the Juniors who are responsi ble for the whole affair Drowned In Red River While bathing in Red River with some boy friends Thursday last Gus Burris got into too deep water and being unable to swim was drowned The boys had a boat but did not go to him when he called for help think ing he was only jesting When rescued he was past bringing to life again A jury was impaneled and an inquest held presided over by Judge Fletcher A ver dict was brought in accordance with the facts stated above The boy was a son of John Burris of Rosslyn and was thir teen years old He came to at tend the celebration and was in duced to go into the water by boy friends who would have sav ed his life had they known his real danger To Seek Lost nine Again Michrol ONoal of Parkersburg W Va has been in Lexington for several days purchasing the necessary outfit for the tenth at tempt which he will make to lo cate the lost Swift Silver Minein Eastern Kentucky Ho will be joined later by a party of West Virginians who believe that they have information that will enable them to locate the mine which will bring them a fortune ONeal has been searching for the famous lost mine for eleven years and has grown gray in his efforts to locate it The mine is supposed to be somewhere in Wolfe or Estill county During the last hundred years hundreds of Kentuckians and other fortune seekers have spent years in pros pecting in the rocky hills and thorny shrubbery of Carter Elli ott Knox and Bell counties in their efforts to locate the lost sil ver mine The story is that Swift was driven from Ids moun tain retreat nearly 150 years ago by hostile Indians and returned to his home in North Carolina I Death of Mrs Maggie Wills I atnearlynear Ruckerville of consumption The funeral was held at eleven oclock Friday morning at the family residence services by Rev J R Peeples and the re mains buried in the family grave yard She was a lady of culture and refinement and will be greatly missed by her large circle of friendsWinchester Dem ocrat Mrs Wills was formerly Miss Margaret Groves of this city where she has numerous friends and admirers From this city her mother Mrs Lou Groves and sister Mrs J M Keunon attended the funeral services To Organize yChurch Elder 0 P Bush District Missionary of the Boones Creek Baptist Association is in the city looking after the interests of that denomination An ef rort will be made to organize a church here There are about twenty Baptists in the city and most of these are very enthusi astic over the proposition A protracted meeting will likely be held here some time this fall in hopes that increased interest may be have been met on the day that they were due and presented and Kentucky is practically free from debt When the Democratic party took up the reigns of government in 1900 following four years of Republican rule and a few months of the notorious Taylor regime time retiring Auditor showed a balance in the Treasum y of 80383451 but the liabilities of the Commonwealth amounted to 200299187 leaving behind him in reality a deficit of 1099 05730 in excess of the assets of the State The present Demo cratic administration for several of its oilicials have been in pub lie office since 1900 has not only met promptly time current expenses of the State but it has discharged all of the above lia bility except a few thousand dol lars less than thirty thousand which it can pay at any time up on presentation of outstanding bonds for that amount In constructing a now Capitol without the issue of a single bond and without putting the State into great debt for it Ken tucky hRs done something that no other State of the United in 3thehundred thousand of the one and a quarter million dollars appro priated line been expended with out tlio tinge of scandal touchJ iujt single dollar and time
