CONSISTENCY A RARE JEWEL Commission after commission I appointed by the Federal government and the U S Agricultural department as well has for years been spending thousands of dollars every year in educating the people to be sparing with the timber and to plant more trees for unless we do the timber at the present rate of cutting will be exhausted in less than twenty five years And Carnegie the steel magnate says the end of iron 3 ore is in sight But despite this most serious and deplorable con dition Congress shuts out all im ports of these necessary and fast depletin articles by a prohibi tive tariff according to the Republican policy We cannot freely import the material of which we are so scarce and save a por tion of what we haVe for those dirk days 25 years hence when i the majority of all our natural rsources tire forever gone Dishonest statesmen with no more consistency than this have paraded about Washington and humbugged the majority of vot ers in this country for nearly half never to have cheap nec6ssa tIes of life until wO have exhausted our own supply whim thenwe will take off the tariff from such articles and get then at what they are really worth These wisecres who teach us so much should harmonize their reported facts with their actions to prove their good faith Howev er they yill give this but little concern so long as they can con trol a majority vote at comparatively so small an outlay The questionsbeing agitated to change the term of office for President from four to six or possibly eight years One might object to this and want the term changed to two or even one year since the voter is patted on the back and fattened for about six months before each Presidential election BO as to get him to vote right We should think the vote er at least would
