convention in regard to money matters for cam paign purposes The leading Republicans seemed to have sanc tioned my proposition apparently on the money question until a few days ago Iliad a talk with a leading Re publican last spring when it was being agitated that I would be time coming candidate I told him the amount I thought we could use in a legitimate way He thought the candidate for Judge should put in twice as much I told him that on condi tions 1 would put in that much He remarked that that would be practically or equal the same I hada consultation with another leading Republican two months ago and he gave me a partial outline of how the campaign ought to be run and thought I ought to put in the amount my first counsellor mentioned I told him I would under con li tions and he seemed to be pleas ed with the proposition untila short time ago 1 understand they had a little caucus at Stanton and decided that I should put in one thousand dollars if I wanted to be the nom inee or could be if 1 did This meeting was held without giving me a show to be at the confer once 1110ii 1dt tfffiiJott + + ll seemed to me it was for the pur pose of bluffing me off the track If taking from what is being talked by the people all over the county for a basis the office of County Judge is almost ready to be picked up and that there is some other parties who want it nowThere is other talk being cir culated for the purpose of weak ening my prospects and that is that the Democrats want me nominated because I would be the easiest beat but it is not the case It is because they think there will be a Republican Judge this time and they prefer me to look after the county affairs to any other Republican in the county I have been riding over the up per part of the county six days and my observation of conditions is that the County Judge will bo elected by the voice of the good element of the people this year x instead of by flooding the county with money and whiskey of which I oppose as much as possible un der the circumstances As there seems to be one great issue and that is the amount of money instead of the man in our convention I will say this I will not limit the money propo sition to the amount I first mom tioned but according to what J think is required after the battle is over and the smoke has clear ed away and I look overtime battlefield but if defeated we will withdraw from the field in good order and consider ourselves prisoners R W GARRETT Notice to Taxpayers My term of office expires Janua ry 1 1910 I am heldresponsible to the County and State for all The tobacco trust a criminal organization a con victed felon has sued the tobacco raisers Kentucky for 185000 damages alleging that the Burley Society is a conspiracy in re straint of trade in that the trust was forced to buy tobacco at 18 cents a pound when it was worth only eight cents I The Sherman antitrust law that was alleged to have been framed to prevent the organization of capitalist trusts is the club being usedand doubtless the federal judges will grant the judgment Why not arrest the tobacco trust for sell ing its tobacco at 50 cents when it is worth onlv eight according to its own petition But the law does not work that way It works only against the useful member of society Why was time trust focred to buy tho to bacc Who forced it Under what statute was it compelled to pay more than it was worth It could have let the tobacco alone J andgone out of business When tho work people demand more bread for their toil and quit work rather than starve working the law never helps themAppeal to Reason A Analysts Sereno Payuqs analysis of the changes in the tariff is based on ly on importations and not on consumption What ho calls reductions are loss of revenue what ho calls increases mean tho increased revenue on last years imports But the reductions are largely hypothetical as the pres ent rates are prohibitive The greatest tax is the tax imposed by the American manufacturers on American consumers Here is where the burden rests and this tariff is shaped not for re lief but for increased exactions Louisville Post This is funny talk for so strong rt Republican
