this day is a lay set apart for national thanksgiving though a cheerful heart is thankful every day It is a good thing however for the peo pie to be periodically reminded of the fact that as a nation we have much to be thankful for and whether we celebrate the day in the most simple manner or with enough turkey and stuffing to invite indigestion let us mark it by a resolve to be better citizens than ever before None of us too humble or obscure to exert a wholesome influence day by day If we do nothing more than greet our neighbor with a cheerful face and a kind word we shall shed a benediction over an entire community Let us therefore give thanks not only upon one day of the year but every day of our lives The Best Pupils An experienced teacher says that pupils who have access to newspapers at home when compared with those who do not are better readers better spellers better grammarians better punctuators and read more understandingly and obtain a prac tical knowledge of charter will at once be renewed and business continue as usual The success of this bank has been remarkable The firpt three years of its exis tance was very disastrous to the stockholders and a heavy assess ment had to be made to recover the losses At this time Mr J F Cox was elected Cashier and when he took hold of the institu tion the outlook was anything but bright However under his efficient management backed up by good officers load splendid di rectors the bank began to thrive and prosper and after a time be gan to pay dividends and provide a surplus until the bank now has a surplus of 10000 and has been paying 6ro dividends for a number of years A few years ago Mr Cox retir ed as cashier to accept a more remunerative position at Bowl ing Green When he left it was said the bank would no longer prosper as it was impossible to get another man who could man age the busines with such rare a bility Mr A T Whitt was then elected cashier to succeed Mr Cox No one has been able to detect any difference the bank has kept up its growth and prospered just the same and Mr Whitt has endeared himself to tlie b iji essinf fits tfas Mr Cox when he loft us He has ever been equal to the occasion and from his cause no time has the bank ever suffered This bank has the record of havingnot lost in business 100 in the past seventeen years This shows how closely the business has been protected and at the I I B Burgher Publisher NO t15 same time every meritorious accommodation rendered its customers possible There is probably not another bank in Ken tucky that can boast of such a safe guarded business career That such a prosperous record can be made from such a per verse beginning seems a won der Now that these adversities in the beginning have been so decisively overcome by such unprecedented prosperity what may we expect from this the fav orable beginning when the bunk stock is selling at a handsome premium and with 10000 sur plus If the same per cent of success can be made in the next twenty years as has hen made in the past seventeen years the stock will then be worth far more than 800 per share Only that we could have more of such suc cessful institutions is other lines of business as the Clay Cify Nil tional Hank The Kentucky Republican seeks consolation in the fact that in Kentucky last week the Republicans elected ono constable in Frankfort and then taking no thought for who is in office Party prejudice is now laid aside and we from this week on go to work hand in hand with Judge Hardwick Squire Win Davis Spuire W T Adams and Squire J W Al len for the upbuilding of Powell county regardless of petty poll tics and party aggrandizement- Let every citizen of Powell county go to work to help the Fiscal court improve the finan cial dondition of the county and at the same time get more bridg os that we need and get our roads in a passable condition the year round All hands to the pump with a steady strong pull and we can do some things in this direction if the constitutional amendment did lose and lets not wait until the first of the year to begin for truly indeed is now always the accepted time andCorrect Writing Young people should acquire oIo1II the hibit of correct speaking and writing and abandon as early as possible any use or slang words and phrases The longer you put this off the more difficult the ate quirement of correct language will be and if the golden age of youth the proper seasOli for the acquisition of language be pass ed in its abuse the unfortunate victim will most probably be doomed to talk slang for life You have merely to use the lan guage which you rend instead of the slang you hear to form a taste in agreement with the speakers and poets in the country To Disfranchise Negro in South Senator Oullom of Illinois is out in an interview in favor of the elimination of the negro vote in the Southern States An amusing feature however is that the Senator believes that the negro should be allowed to vote in the Northern States In the North the Senator thinks Hthe colored man uses his ballot with wisdom and fairness We are satisfied with him says the Senaton but it is no torious that the South is not The Senator says- Eliminate the negro from politics in the Southgive that section of the country an exclu sively white ballot or a franchise ment which shall mean absolute and unequivocal white suprema cy in the management of its whole affairs and theres not a State below the Mason and Dix on line which will not be found in the Republican column of the electorial college Difference In
