last congressional elec tion for instance the tariff trusts spent large sums of money to bring about the election of can didates who had secretly or oth erwise pledged themselves to revision upward These contributions to the Re publican campaign fund were investments in every sense of the word The trusts figured that if Republicans were elected the tariff on the particular commo dities in which they dealt would be kept sufficiently high to bar out competition and assure them monopolies on American mar ketsWith this end in view the tar iff trusts and combination of manufacturers contributed liber ally to Republican campaign finds The expenditure of this tainted money enabled the Republi cans to dominate Congress 1 The tariff was revised upward The manufacturers were given their monopolies Prices were boost edThe result is that the the people are now repaying to the tar iff trusts in increased prices notpnly the hmbutfts invested as contributions to the Republi can campaign fund bpt they arQ also paying a profit varying from 300 to 1000 per cent besides And in the meantime the big corporate interests have taken the reigns of government out of the hands of the people into their own for safe keeping Such is the milk in the portection co coanut It cost Joseph 0 Sibley 40 00888 to win nomination in the TwentyeighthI district in Sibley received the primaries and each vote of Pennsylvania John Dalzell spent 9200 most of which was contributed by pro tected manufacturers The com bined expenditures of Sibley and Dalzell in these two districts were nearly 50000 Their com bined salaries as Representatives in Congress for two years will be only 80000 Their nomina tions therefore cost almost 20 000 more than the emoluments of their office exclusive of mile age and stationary allowances Contributions to the party of revision upward is a paying bus iness investment particularly to the tariff trusts Men will always pay thousands to politicians or to party funds in the hope of getting back millions Make the tariff one for revenue only and you cut off u leading cause of political dishonesty and corruption The Democrats need gain but twentytwo seat in the next
