he thought was his duty There is less Sun day drinkink in Clay City than formerly fewer minors are seen drunk and conditions where no better are more vigorously pros ecuted which means more fines for him down it generally means the end of his national lead ership The recent Democratic State Convention in Nebraska threw Bryan entirely outside of the breastworks because of his prohibition views and we like him only the better for that While Mr Bryan has not been able to elect himself to any office for a great many years he has nevertheless made an im pression on the pages of history He has forced the ar ty to more Democratic principles and has compelled them to lead a better apd somewhat less unholy life He has been the leading in strument in bringing snout the nom ination of Senators by the people in many states The income tax law the regulation of railroads and mgr ny other reform measures were championed by him andadoptedby the Republican party later It is a fact that Bryan had with in his grasp the Presidential ofllce in 1890 For one full hour that great opportunity stood knockingat his doir but haIaiUdvta graspi it WWIihCW9Ivention prpceeqed to noninae v a VicePresidentand tljat tilde it is said McLean would freely have given 2000000 00 of his own money and would have raised one to two million more this would have carried Bryan into the White House on high tide The lack of which defeated him At the com mencement of the 5th ballot of the Democratic convention Bryan gave it out that he would not accept Mc Lean as a running mate and that settled it when Sewall of Maine twos nominated who was a mill stone on the Democratic ticket andj while also a millionare he was a tight wad too thus sacrificing an opportunity of great importance too the Democratic part- Promisory the most finish ed politicians in Kentucky on the 9th of next November calls for no gift of augury The present is uu off year for practice of the Republican artof fooling all the people all of the time as Uncle Joe Cannon can bear witness But for all that wed like to see Mr Langley taken care of A gen tleman of his ability would make an excellent keeper of the records of the Ananias Club Louisville Times Another Trust Formed Twentytwo cotton manufac turing companies have turned themselvos into a trust known as the International Cotton Mills Corporation and capitalized at 20000000 These companies at present manufacture three thousand varieties of fabric employ ten thousand operators and own ten thousand acres of land Their annualsales are estimatedat 18000000 As if to forestall criticism the new president an nouncesthat the twenty two com paniei have not been in competi tion Time and politics will probably determine whether this is to be a good trust or a had one Following close on the an nouncement of the formation of the cotton trust comes word of a bakers trust the new Federal Biscuit Company a 80000000 affair From the newspapers we learn that tit is unofficially an nounced that the new company was formed to create a virtual monopoly of the baking business of the United States without rendering the promoters liable to the Sherman Antitrust act This sounds like an interesting eraferitnent j Cia ttezPtafferns On the first page today we publish the platform adopted by tike pemocrats at the Congres sional convention at Mt Sterling upon winch the Hon A Floyd Byrd will make the race for Con gross and upon which the Times believes h9wjHbe elected Head this platform and see if you can find anything wrong with it see if you can find a single plank in it that is not worthy the endorsement of every moral citizen in the district If you find it so and you believe as you must be lieve that Mr Byrd will carry out this platform with his sup port in Congress if elected then why not give him your vote in November Compare this platform with the one adopted by the Republicans in convention upon which Langley stands andsee which in your honest judgment is catering to the best interests of the ma jority of the people You are bound to decide in favor of Byrd Then lay asideaH prejudice and vote for the man that stands for your best interests instead of the interests of the moneyed kings as does John W Langley Vote for Byrd Last year Senator Gore the blind statesman of Oklahoma blocked an attempt to buy 160 000000 of worth of Indian min oral land for 80000000 of which 8000000 were to go as attorneys ices by stating in the open Senate that he had been approached with a bribe Re cently beforethe special House Investigating Committee head ded that permit its own Investigating Committee to proceed in the matter The postm iif hip at Rice Station is furnishing some a musement just nbw and bids fair to work to the disadvantage of Langleys cause The applicants for the office which is vacant by reason of the death of W L Rice are being indorsed by the Republican Conuty Committee and the Regulars ahd the Insurgent wing respectively so to speak Langley has prom ised his indorsement to both sides it seems and either way the cat jumps it looks like the promising Langley will got scratched Es till Herald ijf ThePayneAldrichlaw is not bringing
