Publisher Entered as secondclass mail matter Thursday Nov 10 1910 The Leopard and Its Spots We have often heard of the leopard changing its spots but never knew exactly what was meant by it until we began read ing the Clay City Times One rilinuteitis raging over the fact that Congressman Langley work apIlropriat Building at Jackson for improve BigSandyother things he has done for his constituents saying that if all of the Congressmen were as extrav agant as Langley the country would soon be bankrupt The spots are changed and up goes a Vail about broken promises conk corning turnpikes It is extrava fiance to build locks and dams dnd Federal Buildings in some other county but it would have bjeenall right to vote for an ap prqpriation tobuild pikes in Poweh county That is consist encv of the first grade isnt it Peqple are not mislead by such campaign talkEstill Herald t The building of turnpikes as Langley promised us is not an extravagance the Times never expected Langley to get tutu pikes for Powell or any other county of thia districtt neither did any other thinking man The spending of thousands and hundreds of thousands of dollars for locks and dams and government buildings benefit only a few it does not benefit one persen fur every twentyfive in the district The spending of hundreds of dol lars to collect a few cents in oth er states does not benefit a single person in this district The Times does truly call all of this extravagance It would not be extrav agance to build turnpikes any where the people of the United States could travel them yet they should be distributed even ly over all the country This argument is consistent all right as all our readers and the Herald well knows The editor of the Times is better known to the readers of the Herald than is the editor of the Herald and any argument to induce Ins readers to believe that the Times will change its spots or will use any inconsistent argument to onlymakeof the Times was born in Estill county and lived there for twee five years and still has property and interests there So really Jve would like to see Langley s build a few of his pikes over there and will joiu the Herald if it wishes in getting him to build his firs pike between Ir vine and Olay City beginning at the former place and coming this way Reciprocity The publisher of this paper has always been a supporter of the Democratic party both as ed itor of the Times and as an indi vidual The party in the county has especially been favored But in nearly every instance the sue cessful Democratic candidates have proven themselves ingrates After the Times has truly sup ported the nominees and did what it could to helprlecttheni virtually tearing its shirt off for them and for this reason lose in every case some paying Republi can subscribers these so favored successful candidates will send to the city and pay more for their stationery and get no better work than the Times can print tit home With all the job printing in the county and at least every Democrat in its bounds supporting it there is a scant living in publishinga Democratic paper in Powell We are sometimes given a job where the pay is donbtful and at best cannot be paid for several months or possi lily years and where the other printer doesnt care to wait so long for his money After having said what we have said above we wish to say that there are some as loyal Democrats in Powell county as anywhere in the United States and they do not forget to always support their home paper They have our best wishes and wh4n they in 4hie future may offer for office again3if for none other than personal reasons we wiJi support them They have a ways supported us when others wouldnt then Why not the Times support them The news paper business in Powell county must necessarily to at least some degree be narrowly brought down totyou scratch my back and Ill scratch yuor back This paper has all along preached home trade and home support but when we see those in whose interests these sermons are preached send away for their printing we lose faith in their meritsIt seem strange to some but after the Times supports n man for office and puts in cash to help elect him votes for himj loses lots of money in his behalf and after he is elected that man send his cash away for printing that we can do and that we must do to make a living wo cant help feel like we have been mistreated by an unworthy man and that man from this on need not expect our support in any contest in the Democratic party tf he gets the nomination then of course its different SAVE YOUR out of date and too slow for time ris jog generation No indeed Ou the other hand you have seen columns of warning to fathers and mothers heeding not and you have seen warnings which a dults have heened not Were newspaper men the monsters some distorted minds picture them to be they certainly would not be displacing the danger signal in their columns at all times There would be no warnings pub lished admonishing people to keep out of mischief Rather would they encourage wrongdo ing in order to gratify the desire to expose the offenders The truth is the newspapers have not been severe enough in their exposures They are in every community numerous individuals who carry out their liusons under cover of darkness who are free to condemn the papers for g ving publicity to crimes against society and the laws of the state These are the fellows who cr out against publicity not than they are against it sa a public policy so much as they are a gainsti it through fern that their time may come sooner or later So all this paper has to say con cerning its policy on the public ty question declares the Lk Grange lad JIi if you dont want to get into the ncJpapers as a horrible example ue
