musicians of noto bo sides a very promising class of younger amateurs who are growing up and who will do honor to the city In the future In speaking on these matters with one of our citizens who has been somewhat conversant with the music and musicians of Frankfort for tho past four decades wo are reminded of tho fact that the art flourished in a high state of cultivation hero early in the fifties when quite a num- ¬ ber of soloists both vocal and instrumental gave fame to the place and delight to its music loving inhabi- ¬ tants Some of tho older citizens of to day will no doubt bo able to recall a series of musical entertainments given by tho young men of that time associated together under the namo and style of Prof Leo Nardis French These and Italian Opera Company concerts were extended through sev- ¬ eral seasons and were from first to last largely attended in fact tho audiences were limited only by tho capacity of tho largest halls in the town The proceeds were devoted to charitable purposes tho funds being divided among the churches to be distributed to tho poor The last of the concerts was given in the present ball room of the Capital Hotel shortly after its completion and far eclipsed all previous eiForts The music was carefully selected and tho costuming was gorgeous particularly that of Mad Eliphanti and her train of attending Maids of Honor Several skilled costumers were em- ¬ ployed for the occasion and the effects produced were startling Very few of the performers who participated in these concerts now survive two or three only are living in the city We reproduce the pro- ¬ gramme of the concert above alluded to the last of the series with a list of the artists and some of the notices of the press which appeared at the time ¬ distressing accident occurred at Bridgeport Wednesday night by which one of the cleverest and best citizens of that neighborhood lost his life Mr Ohas M Jenkins who lives about half a mile from he vil- ¬ lage upon what is known as the Hickman place had been troubled for some time by a chicken thief stealing his poultry and thinking to treat the midnight prowler to a dose of shot ho loaded his gun and placed it in the hen house with a string at- ¬ tached to the door in such a way that an attempt to get into the house would cause the gun to be discharged He had set the gun for the night and was closing the door carefully when by some means the trigger was sprung and the gun discharged the load passing through the door and taking effect in the abdomen of Mr Jenkins and killing him instantly Mr Jenkins was the youngest son of the late John Jenkins and a brother of Mrs F M Scofleld of this city No man stood higher in the estimation of his neighbors or had more friends in the
