Constitution by a majority of about 100000 It was the great issue of the canvass and in its discussion enlisted the best intellect of the State in the press and upon the stump When it is borne in mind that tho new Constitution was opposed by a number of tho leading journals of the State that the corporations all fought it bitterly that tho banks were assessed and contributed largely to secure its defeat its success by a majority so great is a matter alike of surprise and gratification It was a struggle for the mastery between the people and the corporations and the people have gloriously triumphed The result shows that the press is a potential factor in shaping political results only when it is in the right and in accord with popular senti- ¬ ment It was a contest between the masses of the people and political leaders and in the con- ¬ test the people won It is a peoples Constitution made by the people and for the people and under it the rights of the people will be protected their interests promoted and their liber- ¬ ties secured in the years to come With equal rights for all and ex- ¬ clusive privileges to none with equal and uniform taxation with salutary safe guards upon legislation and with all the obsolete ideas in tho old Constitution wiped out forever from this time forward our grand old Com- ¬ monwealth will have a new lease of life and her furture will be great and prosperous Our own people did their full share in swelling the majority for the now Constitution to its splendid propor- ¬ tions It was fitting that they should do so The Constitution settles for all timo the question of the location of the Capital and we can now go forward and build up and make more and more prosperous our little city Let us all rejoice that the Constitu- ¬ tion has won and that a great peaceful revolution has been wrought out with so little friction and in a man- ¬ ner so acceptable to tho whole ¬ self-constitut- WW jMyK i A DK JOS HAAS k IOMfj Session -
