Government reports with pretended analyses and certificates wherein an attempt is made to compare their baking powders with the Royal or making bogus tests from house to house their obvious purpose being to counteract the recent exposures of the inferiority of their own goods arising from their impurity low strength and lack of keeping qualities as shown by the Government chemists and others As to whether any of these baking powders are equal to the Royal the official tests clearly deter- ¬ mine When samples of various baking powders were purchased from the grocers and analyzed by the United States Government Chemists and the Chemists of State and City Boards of Health the reports revealed the fact that the Royal contained from 28 per cent to 60 per cent more leavening strength than any other cream of tartar baking powder and also that it was more perfectly made of purer ingredients and altogether wholesome As these powders are sold to consumers at the same price by the use of the Supposed to be Drowned Joseph Sullivan Superinten- ¬ dent of the Chair Factory of Messrs Mason Foard Co at the Peniten- ¬ tiary disappeared very mysteriously on Saturday morning and has not since been seen He was attacked with the grippe on Saturday for which he took sev- ¬ eral doses of quinine and whisky and about six oclock in the evening left hisjiome on Arlington Heights telling his wife he was coming down town He was last seen about two oclock Sunday morning on Broad- way walking in the direction of the river Diligent search was made for viim Sunday and on Monday Officer Mack Phythian and Mr James Sulli- ¬ van brother of the missing man went to Louisville to look for him thinking perhaps he had wandered oft into the country and taken a train at some station down the road On Tuesday Officer Mack Phythian learned that Albert Dean a resident of the north end of the city had found a hat in the river between the mouth of the Mero street sewer and Congleton Bros saw mill about noon on Sunday looked him up and got the hat which upon examination was thought to bo the one worn by Sullivan when last seen That afternoon dynamite was ex- ¬ ploded in the river at different points and a canon was fired over the spot where he was supposed to have gone Neither had any effect and down the fate of Sullivan is still shrouded in mystery Mr All claims not consistent with the high character of those of our readers who have a small sum of money to invest is called to the fact that the Peoples Homestead and Sav- ¬ ing Association will open a new class of stock on the first of January By investing a small sum weekly with this Association you place your money where it is perfectly safe and get a good return for the same Compromise Proposed At a meeting of the creditors of Mr James M Wakefield held at the Council Chamber in the City Hall Tuesday afternoon he proposed to compromise at 20 cents on the dollar to give security within six months for the payment of the same and the business to be turned over to him by his assignee The matter was referred to a com- ¬ mittee of the creditors who are to formulate a plan of compromise and report at an adjourned meeting to be held at the same place to day Mrs isora Conh Broivinski wife of Capt JamfekF Browinski died at her home on High street Friday morning about 3 oclock after an illness of only six days The bright and happy wife and mother last week buoyant with hope and health lives to day only in the hearts of those who loved her The fell shaft of death could not have been aimed at any other and produced more profound or more general sorrow among this people The sweet embodiment of gentleness intelligence and grace she wab held in high esteem by all who know her and most tenderly loved by those whose relationsnvith her were intimate With moral characteristics of the highest order and her reli- ¬ gious nature ripened into a perfect Christian character is it any wonder that a wide circle of friends pay the tribute of unavailing grief But the sorrow of the household ah there is a poignancy in it that finds no ex- ¬ pression in cold barren words Last Sunday morning a daughter was born in the happy home The mother was soon taken with inflam- ¬ matory rheumatism and then with the prevailing enfluenza her suffer- ¬ ings being intense and the sad re- ¬ sult has been told Married June 11 1878 she was tho mother of three children a daughter aged ten a son eight and the little babothat will never know its mother Her age was about thirty five years and her life was spent in Carrollton She had long been a devoted
