green and growing and looked beautiful indeed beneath a coot of snowMr Rufus Bryant contemplates coming north for the summer and says he thinks the climate per fectly splendid up as far as Goose Creek MessrsAllen and Willie Stigers of Switzer made a flying trip to- M t Zion Sunday Such clover fellows have found a friena in two such clever girls So after leaving Honeysuckle I was told there had been a tele phone run to that place and phone box there but I think news will be scarce there as I had to come up here to hear about it In looking over some papers of an early date we came across a Roundabout supplement dated May 1890 which contained a let terfrom Uncle Zeke Yocum which covered almost two columns The letter was very interesting as they usually were in which he ad dressed the editor as Nephew George often coming in touch with the political affairs of the community in general Well perhaps news will be more plentiful in the future when business starts up in a general way Near the station there will be a wedding or so as I have heard tell ofu young gent who makes biweekly and some times tri to a newly painted house just down the way but as I have only been in the vicinity quite a short while I do not know how true the foregoing rumor is and of course not wishing to in trude on the good will of my neighbors will not express my opinion until better informed upou1iIfi sawmill at Ford on the Kentucky t river and the only reason he gives 5for the abandonment of the river ff improvement is the injury it is doing the sawmill and lumber business on the river It is but i too true that selfishness is the source of many evils in this li- ferrbut it is not often that so candid a confession is made as the basis faction Suppose we admit the damnMymayIcontinue to do to the sawmill and lumber business on the river will not that injury to a few in dividuals be compensated a thousand fold by the benefits to the l many thousands of other people along the river from the moun t tains of Kentucky to Carrollton at its month and from hence Salong the Ohio river to Louisville below and to Cincinnati above its mouth If the extension of the ri looks and dams to the immense coal fields of our mountains will enable the people along the Ken tr tacky river and those along the t Ohio river above mentioned to get their coal at five cents per bushel perbushelwould it not offset the loss Mr Thomas and other lumber men would sustain by continuing the river improvement If coal could WCtu Ever have them Then we cant tell you anything about them You know how dark moun tains we would not be dependent on one or two rises in the Ohio every year for our coal supply and consequently the price would be reduced to onehalf of the pres ent rates And can Mr Thomas suppose that the State of Kentucky after expending originally four or five millions of dollars on the five looks which she constructed and the United States after expend ing as much more in repairing the old locks and dams and in build ing the three new locks and dams and after extending the navigation nearly to the mountains will abandon the improvement because the Ford Lumber Company and some others in the same business may not make as much money as they think they could make if the work was abandoned Such an idea is not only unreasonable but absurd The CourierJournal while pub lishing Mr
