OED A LEWIS Pror and Pub FRANKFORT AUG 27 1904 FRANKLIN ASSOCIATION f The Franklin Baptist Association met on Wednesday at 10 oclock a IlL and was called to order by Dr U V Williams the Moderator After the usual introductory ser vices the letters from the several churches were read by Clerks E II Jones and Crawford Lee From them we gather there has been 112 members received into the various churches 75 by baptism and 87 by letter and otherwise The diminutions were 114by letter death exclusion c leaving a total membership remaining in the body of 31C5 The opening sermon was preached by Rev O L Powers the brilliant young pastor of Providence Church at Woortlake He handled his theme in a masterly and winning manner and held the large audience to the close in profound attention- In the afternoon the Ladies Society held a largely attended and very in teresting meeting in the chapel of the churchRegular routine business was transacted by the Association in the main audience room At night Rev Dr J J Taylor Presi lent of Georgetown College wade a beautiful rousing and attractive ad dress upon the marvelous advantages accruing in the battles of life to young men and women who are thoroughly traind by college life It was at times eloquent and thrilling and at i others witty and amusing It showed that Dr Taylor was an orator of the firstclass Following this came an original and stirring address from Rev Dr Geo W J Young of Georgetown Field Secretary of the AntiSaloon League of America It showed the wonderful advance that S Is being made in the battle against the horrors of the saloon and urged his hearers to an undying warfare against this evil On Thursday the Association con vened at 10 oclock and proceeded with the consideration of the regular reports of committees Among many matters considered was the proposition to acquire a permanent central location for the annual meetings of the body The report of the committee appoint ed last year favoring th raising of 3300 with which to purchase a big tent and to hold the Association at Cove Spring Park was adopted and some 230 was at once subscribed for that purpose Taken all together this meeting while not so largely attended as here tofore has accomplished fully as much if not more for the cause of the Master and the denomination than has heretofore been the case The Association adjourned late Thursday patience toil and tears Shut in from hope by iron bars Still he could see Gods sun and stars Would he find friends The ques tion- Repeated oer and oer Those friends who wept and kissed him When he entered prison door Would his haggard face betray him Could they see by the brand of Cain That the convict out of prison walls Was as free as the summer rain The village had grown to a city With trains and its ceaseless noise And vandals had ruined the wood landI played with the country All gone like the dear old comrades Scattered as winnowed grain And the home of happy boyhood He would never know again Perhapsnow a smile of pleasure Lights his pale yet handsome face The home of his little playmate His sweetheart Lady Grace Has escaped the evolution And is resting by the stream As he left it with his freedom As he dreamed it in his dream Alas tis the story olden Of changes and decay His Grace is the wife of a millionaire And lives by the Mobile Bay The old home passed to strangers And the friends he used to know Have vanished with the happiness In days of long ago His mother dead Her grave None seemed to ksttv or care Was life a failure Future Fate He did not know or dare To SELLS BROS HERE SEPTEMBER 23 Marvelous Modern MusketeersThe Worlds PrizeWinning Aurora Zouaves The pomp and circumstance of glo rious war Is notably manifest In the military features to be presented here on September 23 by the great Adam Forepaugh and Sells Brothers arenic animal hlppodromatic and martial ag gregation Conspicuously wonderful and popular as having time and again both at home and abroad and before all the worlds leading military ex perts conclusively proved themselves far and away the best drilled company of either regular or volunteer soldiers ever known come the Aurora Zouaves They are champion marvels In phe nominal speed and perfection of drill and manual and while it is high praise it may truthfully be said of them that they notably surpass even their fa mous predecessors the Ellsworth Zou aves of New York whose triumphal tour in the deepening shadows of the greatest war of wars Is still remem bered by many veterans of both Blue and Gray who gained from them their first instruction In the fundemental essentials by which battles are won And in this connection a passing tribute to the brave brilliant and lamented Col Elmer E Ellsworth is due In re calling the fact that at the very outset of a career which promised to crown him with unfading laurels he was shot dead by the landlord of a hotel in Alexandria Va for hauling down the Confederate flag lying defiantly from the flagpole on its roof Those who have seen the Aurora Zouaves of which he was the tactical progenitor can imagine how enthusiastically he would have prased and applauded them and the aptness of the simile employed by The New York American and Journal in remarking The Au rora Zouaves are a huge redlegged centipede whose celerity and precision have astonished the
