On Tuesday morning the usually quiet little town of Bufordwttsthrown into intense excitement over a serious if not fatal, shooting. Jnnie:i Striugficld, a worthless character, who lived about the town had turned his horse into Mr. Ben Graves' pasture and Graves had told him not to do so again or he would put the horse up. Striugficld it seems 011 Monday night again turned the horse in Graves' pasture and the latter fastened the horse up in hisstable. Tuesday morning Striugficld went over to Grnves' stable and some words were passed in regard to the matter when Striugficld rushed upon Graves knocking him down bruising htm up considerably. They were separated and Graves went to his home Stringfield followed threatening, and it is said, started into the house. Graves came out with his shot gun covered him with and Striugficld a pistol, but before he could fire Graves fired on him with perhaps fatal effect. The charge was of No. 4 shot and several entered Stringficld's abdomen, stomach and breast. It is a very unfortunate affair as Mr. Graves is one ol Ohio county's best nnd most peaceable citizens. Striugficld is the same man who went the rounds a year or so ago with Cricket Roach and is an eyesore to any community. Mr. Graves gave himself up, but we have not learned anything about when the trial may be expected to be held. About the most serious charge that can be found against him, however, is that he didn't have his gun loaded with buck shot instead of squirrel shot. THE STUFFED CAT. I vrns nil nlono 0110 evening In iny study. Do you not know this study? That is natural becnuso I never liavo introduced orhaps you would not liko you to it. It, I liko it very much first of nil it is mine, nml then becnuso I have so arranged it according to my tastes. There is a littlo of everything in it a colossal writing desk with an infinity of drawers mid pigeonholes, a liookcase, gome shelves for books, two tables, ono largo and one small; a divan, an armchair, on tho floor rugs and cushions thrown down everywhere, pictures on the walls, n gas lamp in tho center. In one corner on top of a column of black wood is a stuffed cat n magnificent tiger striped cat with sparkling green eyes that seems ready to spring down from its pillar, tired probably of acting Simeon Stylites. In this den or study, as yon please to call it, I pass beautiful hours, day or evening, writing, reading, meditating, smoking and doing nothing. It is hero that I retiro in hours of the blues, in tli030 hours of unconscious, ill humor which ono cannot explain or justify and which oxactlyon that account ono translates into an extraordinary nervouB irritation. Tliis den is tho despair of my wifo ani the rest of the household becnuso they aro positively forbidden to touch, tc oven move a book or a paper under tha pretest of putting into order which ro solves itself into real disorder. I wil r wager that if my wife, my my nieces, could arrange my den accord' ing to their tastes, turning it upside But thej down, they would bo happy. do not venture for fear of 1110. Onlj when I speak of my study nil thost feminine lips curl with smiles, disdain fnl, ironical or compassionate. It is especially the stuffed cat that jan upon their nerves. My wifo absolutely wished to throw him away, give him nway, destroy him. I was obliged to declare to her that such an outrage would immediately provoke on my part .1 demand for letral separation pending the approval of divorce by vote of theltaliar chain btr of Uepmn-5- . Having ontered thobouso I mado m ttsunl nn inspection of tho apartment and found everything as beforo. Not oven n chair out of place. I enly Jj,i zryrc: staid ia towa to attend :o work. I was all alone la the bon. A wtn:-n- n came every morning to clean, to 6weep and air the rooms and went away ufter noon. I dined at a restaurant. Now, for some days I thought that I noticed in my study something strange, It had the same odd, unaccustomed. effect upon mo as if something were not in its place. I would have tnken my oath that certain books had been moved, certain papers had been rummaged. I questioned tho domestic, who sworo and perjured herself to tho effect thnt, faithful to her trust, sho had touched nothing, but had limited herself to sweeping tho floor and dusting tho furni ture. And no ono else ever entered tho room. Ono morning it seemed to mo that the stuffed cat, my good cat with the green eyes that I called Tic when ho was nlivo, had been touched. Certainly his attitude was not tho same or I was dreaming. Yes, yes, his head was turned another way, and tho expression of his face, that of nn honest felino, was different from that which I was accustomed to have beforo my eyes. How in tho world had such a strange phenomenon happened? But this was nothing. For two or three evenings, Bhut up in my study, writing nlono in tho largo apartment I thought I heard singular noises hero and there. I aroso from tho desk, went out of tho study and n'l through the house, carefully examining every room, stopping now in this one, now in that, to listen. Nothing, Tho rooms were the uileiico was complete, profound. Then I returned to my btudy and set to work again. But tho noises persisted and became moro decided and frequent. 1 would havo sworn that some mysterious and invisiblo being was bcrutch-inin tho walls or forcing homo lock. Ono evening indeed it heemed to mo that the noiso wns just behind me, and I turned mechanically. Well, I would lmvo taken my oath that I saw the cat Tic movo almost imperceptibly, mid his eye gleam brighter, and his back arch, and hibbohl, majestic tail stretch lf in an act of defiance. But surt'ly it was an hallucination, tho cat was still in his place, impassible, anil gave no sign of moving f rum liis column. All thescMiiHll things, iiihigiiiilcttUtnnd I'Mrnoidiiiury at tho miiio time, had mid distill bed me. By instinct, by nature, I don't fancy what 1 cannot explain. I mil fuu tothoMiiieiiiatural, tho marvelous, tho mysterious. I like to nee clearly within and around myself. I, you see, am of 11 well balanced and Round temperament. Xorvousnebs, morbidness and such nonsenso annoy mo and uro repugnant to mo. Audits I think I know myself pietty well, I was surprii-eand bored by a htato of mind h contrary to my habits nud nature. Kvidently my Byhtem was in n moment of crisis, How could I get out of it bo cured? Must I, too, tako the first train nud go into the country? Perhaps that would bo tho best way. But unfortunately I could not. I hud an important engagement to mpply Homo work, Bnd I could not run nway nud leavo it for whims of n dreamer fit for a hysterical woman. "Per baccol" I told myself, "Pay no attention to tho thingl Let us bo a man, what, tho deuce!" And I returned homo that ovcnlng ns usual, after having dined and visited tho cafe. the fact, the terrible. fris:fz! tic: :ha: But as soon ns I sealed myself nt tho desk ntnl cast a glnnco upon tho manuscript whero I had left off writing, i marvelous, amazing surprlso nwaitod me. You must know that I was writing a novel oh, what a novel! Something fine, exceptionally fine! A romance liko that surely no ono ever wrote. Tho real and tho fanciful, tho romnntlc, tho classic, tho naturalistic, wcro skillfully mingled in it. Now that day when I went out I had Interrupted tho story nt a very interesting point, and tho period ended thus: "Ho burst into a sonorous laugh of scorn: ho was verysuro that tho timo of phantoms nnd enters was long past! That npparltiou then gave him no fenr. It must lw a trick." I had left it there. Taking up tho jicn in order to continue, with my good cigar lighted in my mouth, I cast my eyes on tho paiier, and what did I sec? Just heavens! What indeed! Directly below tho last lino written by me had been written ono word only: Fool! There it was, ironical and menacing, in Gothic letters, which showed the handwriting of a former age. ' Who had traced this scornful nnd mocking word? You can imagine wheth-- . er I remained amazed. I will say oven more I felt an impression of terror. My servant did not know how to road or write. No ono had como into tho honso during tho day. Then by whom had tho words been written? I grew livid nnd felt my self shudder. I sprang to my feet. I felt the hnir stand on end upon my head and n cold perspirntton trickle down my forehead! Tic, tho accursed stuffed cat, looked fixedly nt me, nnd hisjreen eyes seemed to uiinte nnu uecomo vnnegaiea wim n tiiousami colors, uut was mat cat really stuffed? Or wns he not rather alivo by virtue of some witchcraft? All at once I roused myself. I had a feeling of shnmo nnd rage: nnd furious, striking with a heavy fist on tho writing desk, I exclaimed: "But who is tho demon who has written this word? I would liko to know him to twist his neck?" If I wcro to live a thousand years, I shall never forget what happened then. I had hardly finished speaking those words when tho study resounded with mocking laughter dry, strident, infernal. Then the wall opened suddenly, nnd thero camo forth a woman wrapped in a great black mantle. And Tic, tho accursed cat, mado a leap from his pillar, and mowing as ho had never mewed in his lifetime went to rub himself against ' that mysterious being. I drew back moro dead than alive. Still, I had enough presenco of mind to stretch a hand behind me, open a drawer of tho desk and take out a loaded revolver. As soon us I had seized tho weapon I felt safer. I raised my arm and tainted tho re- - i volver at that being, with tho exclamation: "Now, wo will seo who you are!" Alas! Once, twice, thrico 1 touched tho trigger, but the revolver was no longer i obedient. Tho mysterious fignro mado two steps toward me. Tho black mantle that her fell to tho floor. What a fearful sight I It was not a man nor n woman. It was a skeleton a skeleton with two lights flaming in its empty, cavernous eye sockets a skeleton that "laughed satauically, while tho cat Tic made fantastic and wild leaps. It w.w it was Death!
