counties corn pleted and reported to headquarters I show a mrjority of 3772 for McKln ley In 1896 the same counties gave Bryan 244 majority These counties according to the canvass will give Yerkes the Republican candidate for Governor a majority of 4075 In 1899 Taylor the Republican candidate for Governor curled the thirty counties by 963 In the county con taining Louisville 627 precincts have been polled and they show a majority of 6522 for McKinley and 5 762 for Yerkes According to this ratio McKinley will carry the county by about 8000 The Louisville county estimates are not included in the conviction ot right and my sense of duty to my country impel me to turn my back upon the Democratic polity forever I feel that in justice to myself and to your organization my name should be stricken from the membership list of the Young Mens Democratic Club I cannot support Mr Beckham for Governor because he is the exponent and beneficiary ol a policy of force fraud and usurpation btcause he is the representative and beneficiary of a monstrous mesalliance between the organized criminal classes and those who have forcibly seized control of the forms of public authority and because be is but a weakling in the hands of men whom I regard as the most dan gerous enemies ol the State- I cnnnot support Mr James P Gregory for Congress because of his cowardly evasion of the one issue in this campaign the tight of the citiz en to vote I cannot vote for Mr Bryan for President because his indorsement of all the crimes of the Kentucky ma chine has severed the last tie that bound me to the Democratic party- I shall vote for Hon John W Yerkes for Governor because I believe his election to be necessary to the re storatiou and preservation of the right to vote in Kentucky I belong neither doctrinaires made me a Socialist bet fore I knew that Karl Marx had lived and la10redor unmanity I support ed Mr Bryan four years ago because I bad always been a Democrat and because I believed his election would contribute to the advance of Social ism in this country There has been a marvelous crystallzition of the Sot clalistie idea in the United States dur ing the last four years I have watch the process with the keenest interest I have also watched Mr Bryan I have feen him make terms with the machine politicians ol the Democrat- Ic party I have seen the forces over thrown at Chicago in 1896 recapture the machinery ofthe Democratic party at Kansas City in 1900 I have seen the growth of the Socialist Labor party and the birth of the Social Demoracy under the leadership of a brave and honest and able man who loves his fellows I have seen others who believe as I do and who supported Mr Bryan in 96 for the reasons that actuated meform ing other political affiliations But hoping that Mr Bryans success Would be a step in the right direction still suppressing n desire to come out unequivocally in support ol a Socialist ticket it had been my intention to vote for Mr Bryan until his indorse went of the crimes against the first principle of tree government commit ted in Kentucky until he showed so plainly that he is a mere politician a demagogue who is much more anxi ons to be President than be right a partisan who has not the courage to resist the demands of a gang of poll tical freebooters who through an infamous counting machine hope to control thirteen electoral votes My faith in Mr Bryan having betn com pletely destroyed believing that the election oi such a man to the Pre dency would not be even so much at a step toward the application of the economic principles in which I be Ileve being convinced that Mr Watt terson is right when he says it makes but little difference whether Bryan or McKinley wins there is no longer the slightest reason why I should continue to sacrifice my honest con victions to partisan prejudice There are two Socialist candidates for President Francis Maloney of the Socialist Labor party and Eugene V Debs of the Social Democracy I am not familiar with the merits of the controversy between these factions of what should be the party I shall vote for one of them in November I am not yet certain which and after November vs Plowman Fourth Congressional Dis trict of Alabama This contest has been referred to by our caiiltmptwy as a vicious and partisan act of a Re publicau Congressiu the vain attempt to justify the infamous Goebel steal in Kentucky Every intelligent man who has read the Hartford Herald knows that it admitted the election rf Governor Taylor last fall and that it acknowledged that Beckham had stolen tho office of Governor by citing TilE REPUBLICAN to alleged frauds in Congress in an effort to defend its elfIn diseasing this subject it is our desire to give the facts as they really eXIst and not to mislead any man for it has always been our policy to lay town such propositions as we can prove beyond doubt any other loiirso would be the height of folly What we shall quote will be authority and not from the Louisville Courier Journal from which the Herald obtains all its watered information or copy The Fourth District of Alabama is composed of CalhoonChilton leburo DallasShelby and Talladega counties It is in a region known as the Back Belt and has a very large colored population In the election of J8911 W F Aldrich Republican recessed on the face of the returns 7315 while T S Plowman Democrat received 10312 a majority on the face of the returns of 3 067 This election was held under the Sayer law which gave the Dem crats of Alabama as complete con trll of the elections as the Goebel law does in Kentucky Every precinct in the District was in complete Diitrol of Plowmans henchmen In many instances every officer of the precinct was a Democrat Men were voted that had actually been dead for years other names appeared on- the poll book as shown in court who positively swore that they did not gl- tn the election still others were voted who were under twenty one years oM- and yet others who were illegal voters by reason of their being residents of- other counties or precinct aud still literate negrnes who could tint read who desired to vote for Aldrich were voted for Plowmanby his bench men After those cliciiun officers had voted the dead the present aud- the absent they then manufactured names of their own accord and voted I e them In one precinct only three out of eightyseven names that were on the poll book could be found by the Slier iff who had subpennas for them to appear before the cinlest committee In anoher precinct the Sherilfha subpoenas for eeventyseven men whate names were on the poll books but after a dilligent search he return ed with only three At various pre cincts the returns were signed up be fore the ballot boxes had been opened Any number deemed advisabe by the precinct board was reported On page 263 of the record one witness states Till returns were i yned tip btfnre the Mlot boxed had Bern nfiencd or the totes coniitttl Alter these frauds nod ntimenu others Plowmans own returns show ed 3007 majority In Dalla count Plowman received on the face of the returns 4289 Aldrich 1200 when the proof showed that Pluwmon hall received only 551 while Aldrich had 4323 aud in Talladega county on the face of the returns Plowman received 1750aOlI Aldrich 1552 while it was proven before the corn mittee that Plowmau had received just 897 and Aldrich 1990 In this contest more than 000 witnesses were examined If any one question these facts and figures let them write for the records iu the case and convince themselves We have given this case an extensive discussion but not one tenth what we would like to give it or what it really deserves But wr have considered it at length so tha the public may know what the Hart ford HeraW would refer to in a feebl- attempt to justify its course of out rages We have been askedwhat we would do about the AldrichPlow man case by the Herald Now wi ask the Herald what it will do abou the facts cited in this article Further we challenge the Herald to re fute this argument yes we dare it but we desire argument and not bil liugrgate andapprobrium Will the Hrrald now produce some of the evidence that was given before the contest board at Frankfort in thaI outrageous act of unseating a ma elected by the people with all the election machinery in the hands o his opponents We demand that our contemporary who seldom refers tn Ton REPUBLICAN except in tbe mcs abusive and vindictive and poisonou language come up squarely anti show the people where he is at and why he supports a by 1000 Citizens at the Fair Ground Tuesday Imperialism tho CryFroo- I Silver and tho Chicago Convontlon Rollcs of tho Past DEMOCRATS DISAPPOINTED Tuesday at I p in the procession or Democrats and apostate Populists from Beaver Dam reached Hartford all told there were 155 The proces sion was headed by the Render Cornet Band At 2 oclock 1060 people had assembled at the Pair Ground to hear the recently regenerated Popoliticdem ocrats talk ot Bryonistic imperialism Tom Pettit the noted renegade Populist now a subsidized Gaebelized Bryanlztd professional calamity breed er Introduced Gen Weaver in a very brief speech Among other things he said The Issue is as wide as the space which marks the distance be tween hell and heaven but Mr Pett it never once named the issue and the audience was at a loss to know whether It was Imperialism or free silver or free trade or income tax So many are the issues of the Democratic party that an audience is at a loss to know just what Issue Is foremost these days until the speaker has announced what he thinks to be the most important When Mr Pettit had subsided General Weaver took the stage and acknowl edged his thanks to be privileged to speak to a Kentucky audience when he concluded his Introductory of thanks he laid down the premises for his argument in these words NOW It is imperialism four years ago it was silverisra with the adjective free attachedThe aker discussed at length the bible and declared that the devil was an Imperialist which all may concede for argument sake if it wuuld prove anything But the devil is not a can dldate just now for any office that anyone knows of General Weavers discourse on the bible and Declaration of Independence was very good He was very kind and pleasant in his reference to the Republicans throughout his argument which was a very coins mendable feature oftbe old gentle manHe dwelt at length on the subject of liberty and the contest of the gov erncdevldently forgetting that he was talking to a people that had no more to say in their government than the criminals in the penitentiary Liber ty is a precious subject to liberty lov- Ing people but It is a pretty bard nb ject for a Democrat to discuss in Kentucky especially at this time The speaker declared that he joined the Democratic party because it was a party of freedom Well general In Kentucky the Democratic party will not submit to the majority rule it wont acquiesce in defeat and you should have known this before you came here How singular it is for men Demo crats to talk freedom when they have their neighbor by the throat choking his very life out yet these brazen demagogues down here in Kentucky can make mote noise about equal rights to all and exclusive privileges to none than imaginable These mushroom politicians such as Weav er Pettit and others who talk 01 liberty in Kentucky from a Democratic platform view only make themselves ridiculous in the sight of honest men When the old general groundedand declared his intention to conclude there were cries of go ahead but in choosing to defend Beckbam in his outrages and stopping he chose the latter to the surprise and discom fiture of his Democratic hearers It Is considered very discourteous for a man to enter upon a political tour through a state in which there Is a candidate for Governor and to abso utely Ignore him but this Is what E M Berrys hppolntment here yesterday This was a Republican appointment and the Democrats brought Mr Ben D Ringo the champion Democrat ol- f Ohio county here to speak against Judge Wells There was abuut one hundred voters present of whom about onethird weie Democrats Mr Ringo brought his bible and the Ken tucky Statutes along to answer Dr Berryor Judge wells us it turned out to be and we wish to say that Mr Ringo needed a few more books and two or three other men also to help him out of the snap Judge Wells was introduced by Mr Henry Leach and at once took up the issues ol the campaign He began by taking up the Goebel law and traced It from its foundation down to the present showing by the force of plain sound reasoning that all the trouble in Kentucky for the last twelve months was due to that lawHe dealt with the primaries in Louisville the Music Hall convention the con test and showed beyond a doubt to any reasonable man where the trouble I was He advised the people to vote I for John W Yerkes aud lolly paid a handsome tribute to William Mc Rinley and the Republican adminls c tratlon Judge Wells urged the peo pIe to place their votes where they i wonld count the most for civil liberty a right to vote and have that vote counted as cast After showing his audience his law books and bible Mr Ringo began by calling all the Republicans in Frank fort dogs murderers and highway men saying that exGovernor Bradley was worse than Jessce James ever wassaid that Mr Bradley came to Louisville with the mllltl13nd two gat ling guns here flourishing cartridges for same He also said thatthesoldlers dragged these guns through the streets In that city all day and that actually nine thousand Democrats were intimidated thereby He failed to touch a single national issue his whole speech being a weak defense ot the Goebel election law and the rotten judiciary of Franklin and Scott counties Now Mr Editor thetc never was a sicker set of Dem ccrati in Ohio county than was in
