By an Intuitive man I mean a man who in religious matters has a private wire Did you ever argue with a man with a private wire He always had the last word in the matter and he is sure to down you lie runs his private wire up to the seat of his egotism and thinks h- Is talking with God But he is not LINCOLN A RRASONINO MAN Mr Lincoln was not that kind He was a reasoning man He tested premises as best he could put his toot upon them cautiously and stralgtened up to study This made him stow but it made him what Mr Gough called awful sot I remember a preacher who actually prayed the Lord to give Mr Lincoln backbone when he had the stoutest old spinal column that ever stood perpen dicular to the surface of the earth The next element in his character was his common sense the most uncom mon things to be found among men These three his moral sense his reason and his common senteare the three great elements of his character Had he lacked either of these be would have been burled beneath the ruins of the republic Had he lacked the first he would have been a villian lied be lacked the second he would have been a fool Had he lackd the third he would have been a dreamer But having all of them he was Abraham Lincoln Let us now measure if we are able problems that conlrontedMcKin cy he stepped to the front to direct national nflaitti It is not so easy to measure the embarrassments of hard as it Is the perils ol war It taVes more knowledge and more de licacy if touch to use the balances of ol the chtmlst or ol the goldsmith thin It does to use the hay scales The work of lapidary cutting and pol Uhing the faces of precious stones re quires more skill than the work of the stonemason lacing blocks of sandstone So it is mote difficult to accurately measure the stress and pressure of hard times which paralzcs the arm of the mechanic saddens the heatt of is wife and pinches the cheeks of his children than it Is to measure the oar and tumult of war that puts a great people on their feet for heroic reslstence It is this difficulty to measure the problems that met Me Kinley as be approached the White House WHAT CONFRONTED McKINLEy He had the disadvantage beingI the outs It is more difficult o put a beer out of your boat without upsetting it than it is to keep him out machineryfthege of the party in power antagonizedt im and had to be overcome for a fairt tttdThe protective tariff had been ex changed for Inc trade which secured the opposition to Mr McKinley ot lorcign governments who wanted to rettain our markets and keep our laboro bheapfiignborneducated in foreign tree trade prlnclc piesThen iu 1896 the business of the country was dead Potty per edit ofrthe railroads of the country were in the hands of receivers Five millions out ol the 20000000 of our laboring men were idle and 2000000 out of 30000000 more were on reduced ages or reduced time or both Our exports had run down to only S200 and the deposits in the banks hod been reduced to only 197000 00 Failures in business had gllneI p 50 per cent from 10000 under Harrison to 15000 under Cleveland arm products would not bring enough to pay for production Farmers could not pay the intcreist onItheir mortgages Merchants could otsell or buy Factories were closed urnaces cold mines abut down AllI this forced upon us bycompetion with heap foreign labor by free trade With large harvests And cheap transportation rates with millions of laborers anxious to secure something to do and hundreds ol miles of freight cars sidetracked and idle with rjp war tux the countrys resources or divert men from productive pursuits in spite of all these favorable condl lions under Democratic fedmlnistra tion the expenses of the government for the first time in twenty years ex ceded itsincom and that by6js I 000000 ayear till the amount on the wipng side ol the ledger reached the Heavy sumoi 258000000 and the President of the Unied States hid to dicker with foreign bankers to bolster lour credit if not absolutely to keep us out of the ShrtiOs hards In the language of Pie Ment Cleveland we confronted not a theory BOTH SUGGESTED A REMEDY Both political patties admitted the condition and proposed a remedy In a great campaign the most thoughtful and educational cainpaian in the history of the republic the great lead ers proposed remedies and stated their standing on their promises Bryan proposed to continue and ex tend free trade and open the mluts to the mine owners for the free coinage of silver at 16 to rand prophesied that If McKinley was elected distress would be Increased beyond endurance tlje curreucy wouldbe contracted so as to ruin the remnant of business the farmers would lose their farms under their mortgages and ruin would come to all the labeling classes McKinley proposed to enact n protective tariff and to stand by soum I money securing such a currency that a de liar of it would be worth a dollar anywhere on the earth And he prophesied that business would re vive factories would be started fur traces fired up the unemployed would find labor farm products would bring a healthy price exports would in crease gold would flow into the country and the frugal and industrious man would have bread enough for his children and to spare meat every day it he wated it and a silk dress for hit wife to wear Sundays and on the days the children were baptized These ate in substance the promises and prophesies of the chiefs and on these they went to the country The people looked over the two chiefs and their retainers and said We will trust McKinley SIMPLY A VERDICT Now the experiments have been tried The history has been made It only remains to see which prophecy the history fits and vindicate It is no longer an experiment It is sim ply a verdict The evidence is in The fuels sic before the jury TbeI verdict will scon be rendeied The day ol prophecy is over It is situ ply a judgment day Look at the facts of our prosperity Our people are no longer out of work for they have more than they can do Wiges have increased front to to 50 per cent and no honest laboring man now hunts long in vain for work By a recent censns only only about 2 per cent ofthe laboring men are unemployed Bank deposits have increased over 47 per cent The freights carried by our railroads have Increased over 35 per cent Our wool growers now produce in stead of less than one balt ot the wool consumed in this country over 8 1 per cent and the value of the wool has risen over 66 per cent and the value ot cotton about 30 per cent Failures have this year decreased about one third in amount as compared with the last year of Clevelands administration The deficit in the national revenue has stopped and in the first six months of this yeartbere was a credit balance of more than 78 000000 and notwithstanding the heavy expenditures ot a foreign war he annual Interest charges upon the he public debt have actually been- ecreased by about 1000000 The world has become our market The balance of trade has grown in ur favor by leaps and bounds During he first 107 years of the history of f this republic up to 1997 the a- alance of trade in our favor 383000000 whereas during the rst three years ol the present Re ublican administration the balance f trade has been over 1483000000 Europe is now borrowing from us The financial center of the world is ow shifting front
