or soaks to explode We await the results of time WHAT THE NEXT LEGISLATURE II 1 MEANS The next Legislature will mean more good to Kentucky should it be composedof the proper factors thanI any legislature has in the lust of a century The State SenatorialI tfiotricts are to be reapportioned thet Legislative districts the Judicial dill dricts and perhaps the Congression al districts besides this important work for the next Legislature a fair and nonpartisan election law is im peritively demanded The cause of all our woes during the past two I years was the infamous Goebel law and the amendment to that law slightly modified it but it is yet offer sive and repugnant jto peace and good governmentThe d to be elected in November will be expected to give ua a fair and honest reapportionment and an impartialand nun rartisan election law besides this muchneeded legislation our school system needs attention At present it is a wretched skeleton an instrument of disgrace and yet it has escaped the attention of those calling themselves law makers for years and years jS3 far at good laws are concerned Kentucky is but a State in infancy The selection of legislators is the one gIvenUttloit is the paramount quejvloa of the h t hour Every legislative district should guard with zealous care the character and ability of those offering for these positions of trust and honor and thus avoid another calamity ua we were forced to submit to under the reign of the present legislature The Repub licans of Ohio county had three ex cellent gentlemen offering their services to the party and State and from this number they selected Mr Alvia S Bennett to represent them at the polls next November and subseduently in the halls of the Kentucky Legisla ture THE KEY TO SUCCESS Last Saturday the Republicans met at the various voting precincts throughout the county and selected their men to fight their battle next fall We hope that every man cast his vote for the men of his choice and ia now ready to join in the fight against the common enemy The men chosen are good men those de featedare equally as good whilst many others in the ranks belong to the same catagory As the family fight has passed and the standard bearers chosen it becomes the duty of all Republicans everywhere to assist in leading the charge against any whom the Democratic party may set up to fight for its cause The success of the Republican party in Ohio county ia largely due to the tenacity and inflexibility of its cham pions to the irresistible charge of the regulars the volunteers the recruits against the frail aud shatteredwreck of Democracy So fellow Republic ans let us take courage in the achievements of the past andmake the victory next November the grandest the noblest and the most sublime in the partys history As we announced in advance of the pri mary we are ready to give the nom inees our unqualified support andwill lead the charge fight in the ranks or join the guerrillas and take the roughas the party demands Had the nominees of Saturday been men other than those chosen they would have received our support just as readily THE REPUBLICAN sees in the cause of the partywhich it champions better policies and more enduring principles than in any other party or sect Therefore the cause of the party ia greater than the cause of any manAs a matter of course the organ of assassination of character at this place was expected to cry ring rulecourt house ring and every thing else re volting to the minds of the countrymen however we trust that thinking men will consider well and not allow allow disgruntled and unreliable jour nalist cause strife or dissension in the party ranks If there ia harmo ny in the ere should be ftTEosta ptsWprfllcanTsra will be as thank niy many friends far the inteiest which they took in my race and to say that my opponents treated me kindly and manly and I now have only the kindest feelings for them- I believe our primary was conducted fairly and honestly and now think that those of us who filled should join r L I in the contest for the success of the ticket I am fully convinced that the Republican party is the only hope for the future of our country and we must protect its interests Republican success in the Nation depends up on our success in State and county elections Therefore it behooves us to stand by our or address from a lifelong Republican to one and all of our party who participated either as a candidate or voter in the primary of yesterday on which with many so much depended The battle is over the last gun fir ed yet the smoke and debris is not cleared away To the accomplishment ol this task It Is the duty of every Republican to lend a helping hand Human nature is the same every where the pendulum of human thought feeling or emotion swing ing in the same arc and everywhere defeat embitters its victim against those who were Instrumental bring ing it about We fully know our own feelings wishes aims and aspira tions in becoming a candidate and our claims upon our party for recog sufficlentlforand presented them so often and so earnestly we are doubly inpressed with their worthiness and acceptance Here let us pause and consider a moment and ask ourselves the ques tion what is the real object in hold ing a primary Secondly taking an unbiased commonsense view of the matter what is the duty of those who conduct and vote in conventions and primary elections In answer to the thatjthevery we with which to meet and cr bat the common enemy Availability not favoritism shoats be our motto and leading enVjrt in presenting candi dates We have good men well qualified and true to principle and party yet as In the case of some of our officials especially our sheriff in the discharge of his official duties they are often compelled to do some thing which drives from them irret rlevablyand for all time many of their own party I have in mind one case yes and more than one wherein one of the best officials our party ever elected in discharging his whole duty and to meet all obligations was compelled to make numerous levies which made enemies by the score while offi dials in the surrounding counties drifted along in the old slipshod way exposing securities to financial ruin yet continued to swim in popu lar favor What must be done in such canse A common enemy watching Jar a vul nerable point in our candidates rec ord it does seem that good policy would dictate to the rank and file that they select some equally good men whose record cannot be assailed and who has made no enemies in our own ranks however anxious and however conscious ofduty performed an exof Sclal may be that the party may have un its hands as a candidate subject to convention or primary- Ifwe would float our banners if we solidify our strength if we expect to escape in future the wrongs heaped upon Its in the last four years by vie tory at the polls we must select our roost available material as I trust we have done In this county then laymen rank and file defeated candi dates one and all should cast aside very feeling of resentment and do everything in their power that is honorable for the success of the whole ticketRepublicans I as an old soldier in the ranks one who has lelt the pangs if defeat in the house of his friends is well as at the polls without ever a thought of avenlng loyalty to his party beseech you to stand firm and work from now until next November Remember the wrongs we have endured end let this if nothing higher nerve your arm to the combat- If your favorite candidate went down in the primary take a brothers avorlte to your bosom and work tor him In our own humble district we lost one but saved one which is enough or us and we are satisfied notwithstanding the one lost we know to have Feen an excellent official and we felt hat he deserved an indorsement We iccept his successful rival and shall vork as faithfully for his success as vc in the world the country doctor is no doubt in the lead In fact he is looked upon by those around him as being full of wisdom freighted with knowledge and withal wholly indispensable They think they could not live if it were not lot his presence continually in their midst Indeed his very residence among them appears to be a sort of health resort and he is regarded as a kind of referee only on things pertaining to physics but upon everything in general When a good buggy horse hat- a slight cough or a game foot he is at once sought out and consulted by tht owner as to what must be done and what remedy must be applied al though he may make no pretentiom toward veterinary skill Even whet the young chickens begin a wholesali dying the good housewife betake herself to his office forthwith anC makes known her sad misfortunes sin great calamities and no matter how farfetched and longdrawn out hit conclusions may be concerning th invalueableness of her precious domes tics she takes them as final and is uIsure that they are correct as if had come from the wisdom of Solomoi or the philosophy of Socrates They will ask him about the signs and sea sons of the moon and stars when tc plant their gardens and sow theii fields The boys of the community ask him when the weather is bright for fishing and when the water is warm enough to go swimming Ol course he knows and gives them al the Information they desire and some times mote than they need The village blacksmith even asks him how he should shape the shovel plow that he is hammering into plac and what color he should paint the handles and the beam and especially how he should mix the paint The youth ot the town who are desiring with all their heart to become men because 01 a spontaneous love for some peachy cheeked damsel confide to him their desires and apprehensions and implore him to make them a decoction that will cause the hair on their up per lip to pop out as quickly as Virginia grass alter an April shower While all the red headed girls in the village ask for a preparation that will make their hair black and the black headed girls want something that Till turn their into the hues of autumn leaves and many of them demand lotiSn that cart successlully combat with freckles for the supremacy of their complexion The oldwomen want something that will keep their hair from failing out while the old men ask for something that will makr theirs grow in With all these demands that are be ing constantly made upon this won derful gentleman ol science and knowledge why shouldnt he bear the palm ot magnitude in his neigh borhood Why shouldnt he be looked upon as an angel of light Why shouldnt men doll their hat to him and women give him their smiles Why shouldnt he be their leader in society and occupy the chit seat in the synagogue Who would be so diabolical as to pluck one flower from his plume or snatch one star from his crown Why should we wonder when under such circumstances as th e should assume an air of dfgnlty and importance no one will dare to doubt Hence we should all sing with one aCt cord and loud acclaim Long live the Country Doctor LYONSI ITRAnt flI MARK I i rd ILA VEI SYRU1NATURO I i
