YOUNG MANS DUTY I It is the duty of every young mar to lit himself for the civic responsibil ities which the near future will exact of him The business men and the statesmen of today live only for a would seem that there is a greater work for young men in Kentucky than elsewhere in our common country More than a century ago Kentucky was born into statehood with pros pects for a future of renown which she has in part only enj tyed The greatest obstacle to progress has been in not giving the proper encourage mont to the public tchoolg of ihe State Fur more than a hundred years half of the public tchouN or more of the State were given only a term of three months and the teacher was paid in pauper wage Now we have ad vanced in our history of over a cen tury front a three to a five month condition is most wretched indeed and yet the powers insist on an immense reward of in demnity The celestial empires rev euues have been constantly diminish ing for years and the ability of the goverment to meet its obligations lm become more and more embarrassing anti in the present crisis it can onl promise 10000000 a year 90 the demandof the powers for 327000 000 At this rite it would be thirty years in meeting its present obliga tion to the powers accruing from the Boxers conduct The American government has insisted on leniency toward the Chinese but tht others are presistent and it is more than probable that 327000000 will be the amount exacted It the de mand on China had been a billion in stead of a few million dollars the lesson learned would have been cheaply contracted They have learned that their religion their customs and their ancient ideas will not suf ice for this period of progress and advancement The one thing China needs is the inculcation of Western deal and her people are beginning to realize the need of reform and the injection of modernism into its veins IT has long since been claimed by our friends the enemy that the only object in the Goebel prosecution was justice but from the conduct of those in charge of the courts contraries every possible phase of truth this claim may have possessed That strolling barber was hired to swear fdltely against the life and liberty of Caleb Powers and was proven a per juter of the most damnable characer He was even indicted by the Scott county grand jury for swearing falsely andwas given bail at 5200 when it this is done with the dissatisfaction in the Democratic ranks nothing can be more certain than Republican success in Daviees this fall We sincersly hope that the court bouse will be cleaned from cellar to garret and the man Hickman famous for his work in aiding the disfranchises conspirators and political blood suckers at Frank fort last year will be buried in oblivious defeat for the State Senate TIlE Republicans in McLean have flattering prospects fur success in November If they fail to win it will be directly due to bad party management McLean ounty Republicans have a strong ticket in the field these men are handicapped with nothing They arJ of the very best citizens of the country possessing the confidence- of the people The Demociatic tick et will have to carry the odium of the organization was effected The contest for i fficcs was spicy and spirited considering that the office would bi national ones For Gland V L only two names were presented Kirby and Thomas The ballot which was a secret one resulted IP the election of Thomas by one vote Kirby at once moved that the ballot actIto the house but Thomas refused to put the appeal Kirby mounted a tie pile and with impassioned eloquence barranged the newly founded brother hcod He said that Thomas had via lated all rules of coitesy and ludg decorum by voting for himself and demanded the ballot to be retaken that he might do likewise in selfde fense Thomas rejoined with Inland vigor that in the great battle with the pillaging plutocrats that V L must be loyal and true to the order and ifhe had voted for himself for Grand Village Loafer it was not for personal aggrandizement but because he regarded himself as the best man for the office and coscquently best for the order However with Kirby vot- Ing with his tide the appeal carried and Kirby was elected Grand V L Thus ended the first great battle of the N A of V L Kirby arose and with that magnanimous generosty that victorious leader can so well the fact that the Grand V L bad not ruled upon any point yet was the occasion of the illconcealed amusement of his breth renThe election ot a Vice Grand V L was so exciting that finally Henry Alex who developed suddenly into an orator of rare grace and eloquence moved in the interest of harmony that each member be made Vice Grand iv L and take precedence according to age Henrys motion carried and the storm was temporally allayed John Renfrow being the only on that could read and write the election of a secretary was necessarily restrict ed and John won in a walk At this point Willie Cole asked West and solicited the following Interview Mr Taylor what did you see in the far West iThe tights there were so numerous and unusual to one of our vicinity that I fear to attempt to describe them lest I would require too much ol your space and possibly tire your readersAWould you mind giving us an idea ol what you saw the diflerence in that country and this I am willing to attempt an idea Land will say in the first place that I spanned the distance between here and Deming New Mexico abont 2500I miles in sixty hours which is about half way across the Continent Upon reaching the place I found an unusual sort ol country to one in this vicinity about 5000 leet above the sea levelI with only about three inches of rain j fall during the year as compared to our twelve or fifteen Inches here andI therefore not an agricultural country but one rich in minerals Dewing is on a high plateau sur rounded by great barren mountains rich with gold silver copper lead zinc and platinum ores Notwith standing the lack of rain fall they find water at forty to 50 feet below the surface which is as clear as crystal f They have a rarefied air there that makes the place a maca for consumptives which was pathetic to me in this that I found several Kentuckians there full of proverbial hospitality which belongs to our State and suf feting with that ghastly disease At El Paso on the Rio Grande I visited Jaurcz on the other side of the river and necessarily in old Mexico to see the adobe houses the curious people and there quaint manners and customs saw them make their sun dried brick and vend their wares from their curious little shops with dirt floors I was not impressed that the men of Mexico excelled in any thing but the wonien weave and do a sort ofdravn work and fancy home stitch ing that is much sought after and highly prized by the ladles at least I findafter bringing a few specimens home withme The Mexican Government has a system by which they issue free and unlimited silver at the ratio of J6 to i quarterfmoney for change the shopkeeperb gave me two Mexican parently ot the same weight and fineness for one ol ours two of their dimes apparently of the same weight and fineness for one of ours gave me two ot their silver five cent pieces for my nickel and two ol their pennies for my copper It occurred to me that this exchange ol coins was a fine sermon on the Iree silver issue that has disturbed us Democrats for some dime but when I gathered together my little curios that I had bought to bring home to my friends I was stop ped at the custom house on the Amer- Ican side to declare my purchases lor 80gmyeMexican bargains in order to escape confiscation and possibly a fine this was another sermon for the Demo cratlc side and brought to mind the necessity rf the Car Line From Beaver Dam to McHenry Survey is Ordered The Directors of the Hartford Beaver Dam Electric Railway Power and Light Co met Wednesday night and alter much discussion ordered anew survey made to McHenry Most the proceedings were kept secret ut our reporter informs us that a new survey will be made in a few days perhaps next week From what we were able to glean there has been considerable Indiffer ence demonstrated upon the part ol the Board of Trustees of Beaver Dam They have refused to pass an ordl dance ordering the sale of the frau chise ol the town and have thus barred the company from proceeding with the work Hartford has ordered her franchise sold next Monday There has also been some trouble in securing the right ol way on the Beaver Dam end ol the line which is another obstacle in the company r progress It should have had n trouble along this line at all It believed that the right of way can be secured without cost If the line Intersects the I C nt McHenry There are a number of parties in Hartford who want the road to go to McHenry and who have subscribed nothing as yet but will subscribe liberally which will add materially to the prosecution of the work il the change is made Owing to the fact that most ot the work ot the directors was secret we could riot obtain the details of the meeting but it now becomes neces sary for Beaver Dam to show down or loose the road which is a considers ble loss to the town and it may be that matters have already gone to tar to save it we cant say as to this We I have long hoped to see the two towns connected with an electric line and both lighted with electricity May we not yet hope for this conven ience 4 t Struck One Day The workmen at the Taylor Mines went out on a strike Monday becaus- of
