govern ment From the foundation of the Infant American republic there have been two or more parties advoeatinjC principles radically tame time claiming to be workin tor the best interests of the govern y tnent These parlies have met upon National fields of battle in joint de bate to advhe educate and instruct tho voter to cast an intelligent vote It has been the custom in State polio tics and an unwritten law In local campaigns But matters in Demo cratic lore have become so corrupt that the leaders of that party have thought it wise to keep the voter in L blind ignorance of State politicacoun ty politics and the records of the Democratic candidates now beiore the people An invitation was extended the Democratic candidates recently to to meet the Republican candidates on 1 the stump to discus the issues before the people in answer to tbat cbal f lenge the Democratic candidate spoke thu through their chairman It is their opinion tbat the voters ot this county are fully adviied touch lug the issues involved in this cam paign and YOUI proposition is respect fully declined Indeed the voter are advised touching the issues of thi campaign They have truly said it well THE KEIUIILICAN advised in I advance that politics bad been en joined from the campaignby the Democratic candidates This course comes to us as no surprise It was but a logical conclusion for an intelli he can not explain to Democrats what he meant by writing Mr T F Crowder such a Populistic letter only last year to Populists he cant possibly explain his 4th of March confession of Demo cratic faith withany degree of satis faction save I was fool in the Dem ocrat remember I have my loot on the neck of the Democratic party No defense could be made of his in dictment of the men wbo voted for Mr Yerkes as endorsers of lawless ness Finally Mr Miller cant de t fend his report of the countys finau cial standing Mr Smith has had ample opportu nity to explain already why he voted against the miners Two Weeks Pay DIlland he has absolutely de clined he has not yet been afforded an opportunity to explain why he had maderandham procession last fall this juint de bate would have afforded an excellent opportunity for explaining along this line but he refused it he could have denied being Sheriff two terms Clerk two terms Representative and Door keeper and receiving 850000 from the public crib were it not true There are a good many things that Mr Smith could have explained in a joint debate for each of the Demo U cratic candidates there is plenty oi explaining but every mothersou of them refused to face the people At the beginning of the campaign THE RntUiiucAN advised tbe public of Judge Millers record tinco 90 We have advised as lo Mr Smiths continued oflico holding and his Gentlemen oi the Committee Concerning thai challenge from the Republican candidates I need say but little In tbe first place however Ill eay I aint gain to meet Motel RI land on the stump because I sometimes lose my head and cat too much I told a fellow on the street one day tbat I was going to give the editor of the Republican piper down here a damned good beatln and it seems that tbe damned have made dilligent search in the ar chives of the county and have lall to find anything that will approach the above statement It la but laIr to presume that if one man cQ lJ find such things in the Fiscal Cjutt adjudged the coun tys indebtedness to be 83000801 Order Book No1 p 818350 I This order of judgment was signed by J P Miller J O C C On the 26thof December 1898 tbe bond issue of 830000 was made the outstanding obligations of tbe county taken up and the Sinking Fund Commissioners found that they had 508853 in their potsession alter all the countys accounts bed been settled The question then confront ed the Sinking Fund as to what should be done with the 8508853 surplus After a little investigation t it was found that 85000 worth oi the bonds floated could wtie bought back at a small premium which transaction the Sinking Fund Commissioners proceeded to make Having taken up this 85000 of supeifluous bonds the countys indebtedness was found to be 825000 and not 83500088 Miller states on his card Tbe order book shows that Instead of 817000 of the countys indebtedness having been paid mutated by Miller that only 112000 including this I500Q from the superfluous bonds had been paid at the time of the issue of the above statement This card states that there were JJOOO in the Sinking Iundat the close of business for 1000I when there Was not one cent therein hut
