saw rtcenth In the press dis patches from Washington says R T Sru the ot that city an Item to the t fleet that the original copy ol the Declaration of Independence was fad Ing The story Is true that the document is lading but not true that this partial obliteration Is of recent occur rang Many years ago In taking an Impression of thedeclaratlon lor the purpose of reproducing copies of It ttrtQtdllAstrwhich the paper was written The writing began to fade rapidly so rapidly indeed that In a short time It was with extreme difficulty that eith er the text or the instrument or the I signatures to It could be deciphered- At this time the declaration was hung upon the wall In the library ol the Department of State It was In a wooden case supplied with doors but during the hours when the library was open the public demands ol the visitors caused the doars to be open also The action of the light upon the document was very huttlul and In order to preserve It from further decay the Secretary of State caused a specially constructed safe to be man ufactured for it You must possess a strong pull today to obtain a glimpse of It for as the years pass the lading of the writI lag while checked nevertheless con tlnnes As a consequence the depart ment officials guard it catelully and expose It to the light with extreme reluctance The safe in which the declaration now rests Is on the right I oi the entrance to the librarywhile on the lefthand wall hangs the case in which it was iorruerly kept A reproduction now takes Its place but ninetynine out ol every hundred who visit the library depart after examin ing this copy believe that they have seen the original They have seen something however far below the large case In a smaller one con taming a rough drag of the declara the Young Girl t Over begs Pardon The elopement of Jas W Lanham and Iva Wedding sometime since from the Sulphur Springs community was a very disgraceful aOair and caused quite a stir id that vicinity being the source of neighborhood gossip for quite a while But the most startling of all rumors is the one now current- It Is reported that Lanham has communicated to his wife from some point in Tennessee tidings of repen tensthe acknowledgment that his conscience Is heavily burdened that he is weary of body and spirit and is meditating suicide A reporter to TUB REPUBLICAN says Lanham wrote his deserted wife re cently since he kidnapped Miss wedding that if she would come to him he would send Miss Wedding home and unless this request was granted he would throw himself in front of the tartest L N express andbe hurled into eternity where he ought to be This report however is unauthen tlea ted but it Is common neighborhood talk The reporter could not advise whether Mrs Lauham would forgive the folly of her husband and grant him full pardon and join for tunes with him again or allow him to be the hero in blessing the country with prompt and immediate riddance of the most accursed fiend to civilization The taking of his own life will not restore the young girls ruined char acter Her future hopes are blasted the purity and sweetness of her char acter with which nature richly en
