are very favorable for his election to the office of Circuit Judge at the coming November election and should ho be elected the people of this district will have a Judge to be proud ofone who will administer the law to the rich and poor alike regardless of poll ticegiving equal justice to all parties While Mr Morrison has always been a Republican he has always been consistent in his views on political questions and his standing among the lawyers is the very best He will not only carry the strength of the entire Republican party but will add hundreds of Democrats who have already enlisted under his banner Mr M L Heavrin the Republican nom moo for Commonwealths Attorney in the Cth judicial district is very popu lar with the people and electedwo of will have one of the best prosecuting attorneys in the State Ho has a large acquaintance all over the entire district and will add much strength to the ticket With Mr Morrison as Judge Mr Heavrin as Common wealths Attorney the people of this district will have officers who will be an honor to the State- WIIITESVILLE y KY Sept I6A crowd of young folks attended the protracted meeting at Ralphs Chapel Sunday night Miss Carrie McCarty Is of age was shot and killed In Owsley county by Harry Cralk and Green Strong who had known the man all his life Isaacs resided near this place and was on his way home at night when he was accosted by Cralk and Strong The men talked for a few minutes and when about to part Isaacs invit ed the two men to spend the night with him at his home In reply It isI said that they made a proposition in regard to Isaacs wife which he re sented Isaacs repaired to the house of a friend and told the inmates what had transpired and procured a shot = gun Meanwhile Craik and Strong had taken a circuitous route In order to intercept Isaac on his way home and upon meeting both opened fire Isaacs returned it without effect and received a mortal wound Neighbors heard the shooting and going to the locality found Isaacs lying on the ground They picked him up and carried him home but he died on the way A sheriffs posse Is on the trail of his murderers Who is She The complete woman the woman who can always and rally of her home NO CHANGE OF VENUE Motion Finally Overruled by Judge Osborne Six Jurors Ac cepted Cynthlann Ky Sept I5After hearing many witnesses testify as to the sentiment against Curtis Jett in Harrison county as exhibited in the popular clamor against Juror Jasper Zing who would not agree to a death sentence in the Marcum murder trial Judge Osborne this afternoon over ruled the motion of the defense for a change of venue stating that he be lieved from the testimony offered that there was nothing to prevent the de Pendant from securing as fair a trail in Harrison county as enywhere else In the state The selection of the jury was begun and six men were finally accepted and one temporarily accepted when the regular panel was exhausted The court then announced that fifty names would tie drawn from the wheel to complete the panel and the Indications are that the formation of the jury will be complete by noon to morrow Very few talesmen stated that they had formed or expressed opinions as to the guilt of the accused in the Cockrlll case- Commonwealths Attorney Byrd will state the case and the Introduc Lion of testimony will then begin At present it seems that Jett will stand trial with only one attorney to defend him Mr J I Blanton who has made many motions for a continuance said tonight that has associates could not be present and that he would fight the case single handed As it is unusual for a case of such magni tude to be handled by one attorney the fact that Mr Blanton is to be un aided will lend added interest to the trial Mr Blanton is an able lawyer and will ho doubt make a strong fight If he sticks to his determina don not to retain additional counsel If there is only one attorney for the defense throughout the case there will be only one argument On each side instead of four as in the Jett White case A F Byrd will argue the case for the Commonwealth DUNDEE KY Sept 14Mrs Jas V Shrouls is in Louisville this week Mr G J Bean was in our Democratic vote for Governor of Kentucky is ex citing as well as edifying to the philosophic ly minded It is well known that the benevolent Mr Hyde Beck ham is the candidate of the good Democrats who are content to do their thinking by proxy and to vote by ear He Is a lovely young man witha face like a choirboy As an orator he Is a spellweaver laying on roseleaf colors with a tongue dipped in vaseline He means well but does not somehow manage to deliver the goods because of the machina tions of the wicked Dr Jekyll Beck hamDr Jekyll Beckham is tile candi date ol the machine Democrats who do their thinking as they are told and vote after the polls close as votes are needed i As an orator he has ad mirable qualities of main force and an ability to lead stuff from printed slips He rises to great heights of impetuosity in the noble Art of vituperation Where that emlnenternptor of philip pica the Hon Harry Vesuvius Mc Chesney is compelled to chew soap tIn his noblest moments of froth cappe4 excitation Dr Jekyll Beck ham swallows the box and rattles the scenery for his grand effects It is said oi him that he can evade telling the truth in all the dead languages 112 living ones and William Goebel was assassinated February 3 190 More than three years have passed since that capital crime was committed Who fired the fatal shot Nobody is wises on that point than belore the courts moved In the matter There have been a long series of trials whose object was clear ly to smlrth Republicans and play politics For this purpose criminal lawyers WIth records for fixing juries and running perjury mills were summoned to Kentucky to shape the pros ecution Instead of identifying the murderer and sending him to the gal lows the plano operations has been to shy away from him whoever he was and to hound the Republicans elected to fill the state offices Beyond the shadow of a doubt Taylor was elected Governor tot Kentucky and Powers was elected Secretary of State They were brutally robbed of their places by political revolutionists and enemies of free government Powers is under sentence ol death through a jury intentionally composed of twelve Goebel Democrats Taylor would bsimilarly treated by another jury of twelve Goebel Democrats If he could be caught on Kentucky soil his crime being that he is a Republican and received more votes for Governor than his antagonist who as his sup porters admitted devised a system of elections that left nothing td chance In all probability the exponents of Goebel lynch law that takes the form of juries of twelve Democrats express ly selected from their own circle know who killed Goebel but they have been running a perjury saturna lia for political purposes and are de lighted with their latest success in condemning to the gibbet a man whose oflense Is belonging to the Re publican party and attempting to fill In Kentucky an office to which he packidat such a sentence but by preserva tion the imported and other legal and judicial talent seem to have ob tained just the sort ol jury they want ed It is not claimed that Powers shot Goebel But he protested against Goebel politics and that coupled with the enormity of fairly beating it nt the polls appears to be a hanging matter In Kentucky Powers may be hung and Taylor also may meet the same fate along with other Republic ansthe Goebelltes dislikes When their persbnal hatreds are glutted the Goebelltes may condescend to reveal their knowledge of who shot Goebel GlobeDemocrat A Purgative Ploasuro If you ever took DeWitts Little Early Risers for biliousness What is absence of mind The words as generally used have a vag ue and relative rather than an absolute meaning says a writer in the Philadelphia Saturday Evening Post La Pontine is generally spoken of as one of the most absentedminded oi men and it is stated as an illustra tion of this that a few days after at tending the funeral of a iiiend he called at his house and asked if he was in He was shocked on being told of his friends death but presently recovering from his surprise exclaimed True true I recollect pow I attended his funeral The great thinker who overtopped all othM L u1 ancient or modern timesthe discoverer of gravitation Newton should expect to find a very absentminded man and such he was When he had friends to entertain he would sometimes go into his study to get a bottle of wine and straightway forget them His friend Dr Stukely called one day to see him and Newton sent word that he would see lain directly but thought no more of the matter The doctor who had come a long distance waited for some time and became very hungry Seeing a fine roasted fowl on the table in the room into which he had been shownwhich had been placed there for the philosophers dinnerthe doctor was unable to resist the clamorous craving of his appetite and at tacked the fowl with such vigor that when at last the great man appear ed there was not a morsel left I protest said Newton seeing the empty platter I bad forgotten that I had eaten my dinner You see doctor how oblivious we philoso phers are- More abstracted even than Newton was Dr Robert Hamilton one of the profounded philosophical thinkers of his daysOne of his most notable works was an essay on the national debt which iscald to have fallen like a bombshell upon the British parlia ment or rather to have risen andtl luminated its darkness like tat Orient sun Yet in public it is said the man was a shadow He onced pulled off his hat to his own wife on the streets and apologized for not having the pleasure of her acquaintance He met his classes in college on a dark morning with one of his wifes white stockings on one leg and one of his own black ones on the other He would run against a cow in the road turn around and say I beg your pardon madam I hope you are not hurtEverybody is familiar with the sto ry told Archimedes the great ge ometer of Syracuse who discovering the solution of an important problem
